2Hrs playing time on the field each week....full 360 degree motion, non-stop 30min quarters. With 200 to 250 pound guys running 10miles per games whilst getting bumped, tackled, scragged all game. They kick the ball like a QB throwing it...and they sometimes catch the ball by standing on the shoulders of others (teammates & opponents) jumping for the same catch. Teams score around 80-120pts per games..so lots of scoring (goals)...and it's been around for over 150 years (before NFL, NBA etc)...Best sport on the Planet

You can't protect yourself from someone else jumping on you.
Every single recess/lunchtime at school we would kick the football end-to-end (back and forth) and practice speckies.
    If you know you know.

These dudes can hit a target at like 50 metres on the run and in front of there player to catch it any angle also
    They literally have 360 view

Keep in mind regarding one handed marks that an AFL ball is slightly fatter and less pointy than a NFL ball. AFL balls are completely smooth too and AFL players are not allowed to wear gloves unless for a medical reason and even then it has to be a specific type.
The first one hander @1:30 was by Charlie Dixon. He had a one hander the year before, he was out stretched falling backwards with 2 defenders, one of them kinda hanging off him in the wet. He deserved "Mark of the year" imo but didn't get it.
The last Mark in this video got Mark of the Year.
Running with flight of the football for a mark into a pack of players is the most courageous aspect of Australian Football, this game is 360degrees at all times.

There is no rule regarding hands in any form.. You need to have control of the ball after a kick of the set distance.
      . forearms only are fine.

Your commentary is pretty good. You are asking all the right questions. Players are not really allowed to use their hands to climb on their opponent, they really need to use their body and particularly their legs only, but the umpires turn a blind eye so as not to take away anything from the spectacle and the excitement of the crowd.

Almost every single player on the field can kick at least 55 yards on their preferred foot and 45 on their other one. They can do it on the run. As well as bend the ball in the air both ways and spin it along the ground.

  • @chriskelly9476
    @chriskelly9476 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Usually they kick strategically wherever they can, unless of course they're under good defensive pressure and have to get rid of the ball in a hurry. Also, you mentioned that some of these marks look like they're cheating, well players can be penalized for jumping on someone's shoulders like that if they're not making a realistic attempt to mark the ball, so it's not like they can do it just for show, or to shove their opponent out of the way. They must be legitimately attempting a mark to not be penalized.

Every now and then there’s an exchange game between Australian rules football and Irish Gaelic football. The two games are very similar in rules but Irish use a round ball. The first game, both teams play Aussie rules and the second games is Gaelic rules (or vice versa). It is fast paced, hard hitting great sport, and because of the rivalry you can throw in a pinch of UFC just to spice things up a little.

The mark is usually paid to the man in front if court by to players, but in this case if the ball is to high they are allowed to use the opponent's shoulders and high fly for the ball. But they cant push the opponent with their hands, that is illegal and a penalty kick will be paid to the other team.

  • @harpermcalpineblack8573

The key rule is the jumping player must be going for the ball. Often the player jumped on has misjudged the flight of the ball. If you find yourself under the flight of the ball you're open to being jumped on. Good forwards can lead defenders out under the flight and then drop back, setting up the play. Some of these are really big guys and they have fantastic spring.

Its aiming like a quarter back in nfl you point your toes to where you want the ball to go the leg lift is the power and depending on the angle you hold the ball and where the foot stricks the ball with the shape of the ball 99% will deliver it to the other players

Kids learn to kick the footy when they are young and most get better as they get older. As accurate by foot as your quarterbacks are by hand. And the kicks are normally between 30 and 50 metres.

the kicking to their team mates on the run is strategic mostly unless the situation doesnt allow for it . cant become a pro footy player without this being no1 skill . they do this day in day out. all players on field can mark the ball thats another no.1 skill . dont know if you can stomach watching injuries but worst AFL injuries of all time on YT might i suggest

Like you said near the end about Brain Injury. One player who won years ago the Best mark of the Year and stands as one of the best EVER has problems with Brain Injury long term. He had retired long ago. Both NFL and AFL has to deal with the problem and start looking after players.

Because whoever catches the ball gains a free kick, if you find yourself in the dropzone you can not just vacate it and allow the opponent to make the catch, so you get stuck. It sucks and there is often little you can do to prevent getting done.

You're definitely not allowed to push your opponent in the back at any time, including taking marks. You can push your opponent in the sides and front when contesting the ball. Or you can hold your opponent off with shoulders, elbows and hips to protect a space were the ball will land - even in the back as long as you don't push forwards. The player's hands on his opponent's shoulders to help him jump is not technically legal, unless it's a real ripper of a speccy, and the crowd loved it, and it's already in slow-mo on the big screen- so WTF.

See how much more interesting the NFL would be if you were allowed to do this. There is surprisingly few injuries from high marking . The actual concept came from the game the Aboriginals played which was the basis of Australian rules football. They would jump high to get the ball made of possum skins .

Half of these marks are illegal. You can only touch a player (hands on shoulder?) within the competition for the ball, and then not without a decent shot at winning the ball. Hands on the shoulder like some of these is illegal, but the umpires allow it to keep the game flowing.

Maybe our real grass or lawn or whatever you call it, maybe that’s better to land on after you fly up high for a mark.
You guys use astroturf or something to play on don’t you?
I have loved our wonderful game all my life and I can’t remember ever worrying about the players who get climbed on, or getting hurt coming down from screamers (another word for a great mark) It’s a brutal sport but it’s beautiful.. so fast, high scoring and astonishing skills.
    Women and girls play too.
All players are sore all over after a match. But they play again the next weekend anyway.

The mark at 4:27 from the 2021 Grand Final was illegal for the hands pushing in the back and also pushing down on the shoulders but it was paid, probably because the umpires view was obstructed. It's a big ground, the ball moves fast and there were several players at the contest. It all adds to the emotion during a tight game.
