100% - most rectors from the USA bring up the shame and disrespect. It isn’t really a think in this circumstance in the AFL. The shame would be shirking the contest as the other person said. It’s not an individual sport and you are playing for a team so not contesting because you think you might get posterised would be letting the team down. And people never really mention who got marked on, it’s more a celebration of who took the mark.
Some of the best marks of all time aren't the ones that jump on top of shoulders, but the guys that run with flight off the ball, watching it every inch of the way and their eyes never deviate from the ball, even though they know there are going to be guys where the ball lands and they will be hit hard. Truest form of courage in our sport.
As long as you control the ball in the air it is called a mark, even if you hit the ground and the ball comes loose (it is not an "incomplete" like in NFL).

Yeah ,I read your disclaimer , we'll let it go this time , ok , just don't let it happen again . 😁 The guy's name that you're hearing a lot is Jeremy Howe . (I think he's still playing , he was in 2022) anyway just search him on youtube or whatever and you'll see a pretty impressive "Marking" highlight reel . YES everybody tries to do this , Marking the ball (catching it on the full ) (If it travels over 15 metres) gets you a free kick ( you can't be tackled). So it's a really important aspect of the game ( almost as important as scoring)
Most of the rules in our game are intended to create a fair contest when you take a mark or are awarded a mark by the field umpire, you can keep playing or stop on the spot and take an unimpeded kick. To take a mark, you need to complete the catch or be judged by the field umpire to have controlled the ball prior to making contact with the ground or another player. A defender can spoil the mark by punching the ball, he can make contact with the hands and ball but not the arms. Also , the punch must be as the ball is being caught, if the player controls the ball before it's punched out of his hands the mark will be awarded. Being that it a 360 degree game with opponents coming at you from all angles
To be awarded the mark you have to take control of the ball. If you cntrol it to the ground and it rolls away, the mark is still awarded. It is called a mark, btw, because where you catch the ball the umpire will sometimes mark the ground indicating where you can take an unimpeded kick from. If you run past your mark it is "play on" and the opposition can tackle.
Points. 1. Whether a mark is a mark or not is entirely at the umoires discretion. Ovwr the years some legendary marks have been hotly debated. Did he hold the ball for long enough is the ultimate question. Control it to the ground and 99% of rime you will be paid the mark. 2. No, big marks dont happen eveey single game. Buy sure they are prwtty common. At the end of each season youd be hoping that 20 or so real good ones have been taken. 3. There is a Mark of the Year award each season. Sometimes the judges fuck it up. Oh well. Plenty of YTs of those. 4. High marks are only a tiny aspect (but the most spectacular) of our legendary game. The rabbit hole awaits you buddy.

Randy Moss and OBJ ain't got shit on these guys! Lol Marks like this happen almost every game. It's probably the most exciting aspect of the game. As a kid growing up, you'd play kick to kick with your mates and try and take a hanger (high mark) on them, so they all know what to do at the elite level. Having a big mark taken on you is kind of like getting dunked on. You know it might be coming, but you can't do much about it. Lol. And you don't have any time to lay on the ground and whine because the game is constantly moving. Great reaction pal! Keep enjoying our great game.
FYI, it is played from grade school by both boys and girls and is an amateur game up until the draft season where all the professional teams find out who is in the draft and which pick numbers are allocated to which club. Then the deals between the clubs begin as to who is willing to trade or swap a certain draft pick(s) and professional player(s) who may be up for a transfer. The route to the professional game is via amateur teams and is not based on playing for Universities/Colleges teams like in the States. It is a grass roots game based in suburbs and rural towns, with some schools fielding teams as well. It is played in all States and Territories although not all of them field a professional team. Melbourne in the State of Victoria has the most professional teams in the league with another regional team in Geelong. I could go to an AFL game on Friday night and go and watch my local suburban team on Sunday which fields teams from under Under 8 year olds through to Under 17 year olds. Of course the rules and playing times differ for the little kids. My grandson’s Under 11 team ALL wear head protection to protect themselves from concussion and mouth guards. Also, there is a USA Australian Rules league with teams in quite a few States and you can find them on TH-cam. Enjoy what is a religion in Australia and also the oldest code of football in the World.
some credit should be given to the kicker in these great marks. To pick a contest where 2 plus players are contesting a ball coming down but allowing a teammate a run and jump over the pack. It is a practiced drill with some teams
Marking the ball The umpire will award a mark (catch) to a player if, in the umpire's opinion, the player has had AT SOME POINT during the attempt, good control of the ball. What is considered good control will vary and many times largely depends on the degree of difficulty of the mark itself. For example, if you are a player standing out on your own and you fumble a mark with absolutely no pressure on you whatsoever, then you have approximately ZERO chance that the umpire is going to award you a mark. If, on the other hand, you are climbing over a pack of players, with an extreme degree of difficulty, then the umpire is going to cut you some slack. Meaning that they're just looking for that level of control to satisfy their criteria. If you then fumble the ball after that point of control in the umpire's opinion, the mark will stand. BTW, a mark simply means ""catch" in AFL terms. These marks are, of course, the more spectacular ones but simply catching the ball is called a mark, it doesn't have to be spectacular like these to be called a mark.
Lucky you made the disclaimer my friend, otherwise you would’ve been at war with the whole of Australia calling it rugby😹 So in answer to your question, The umpire decides if the player had “CONTROL” of the ball. It doesn’t matter if it falls out of your hands on the way to the ground, providing as I said you were in “control” of the ball. There is a prize by the likes of a supermarket with naming rights for the “Mark of the year.” The best ones are nominated and then a panel decides the winner of usually $1000.
to get a mark you just have to be in control of the ball. If an opponent or hitting the ground knocks the ball out of your hand, but youre otherwise in control, its still a mark.

Most players wear mouthguards , it's optional , but , come on , who's not gonna wear one ? (Some don't though) the only other pads worn are a single shinguard by the "Ruckman" (I'm not going into who that is.) There are over 100 marks per game , mostly , (not all are spectacular like these ) (Speccies) Everytime the ball is caught on the full is a "Mark"
The game is not Rugby, it's Australian Rules Football, AFL for short. It's a completely different game. The players are regarded as the fittest players in the world, in any football code. The difference between A.F.L. and Cross-Country Wrestling (Thugby) is that an A.F.L Final gets a 100,000+ crowd, whereas the Thugby attendance is barely 'two-and-a-dog' (and the poor dish-licker has no say in the matter as he is dragged along at the end of the leash, to boost the numbers). The official attendance at the 2022 AFL Grand Final a month ago was a sell-out 100,024 and the AFL estimated that a further 80,000 fans missed out on tickets, so the ground capacity could possibly be 100% bigger than it already is, but at that size, you'd need a telescope to see the players.
Too many illegal marks , you cannot put hand on the player you leap over , Howl doe's it all the time , keep the hand off the neck area shoulder it's around the neck, won't be marking then

Yes, I have a “What is AFL?” Video coming out soon! I have learned since I made this video so I apologize!
Too many illegal marks , you cannot put hand on the player you leap over , Howl doe's it all the time , keep the hand off the neck area shoulder it's around the neck, won't be marking then
AFL not rugby bud
