    The games are actually 2 hours long, it's 20 min quarters plus time added for stoppages of play.... throw ups, throw ins, goals, injuries, etc. Pretty much every quarter will go to about 30 mins, sometimes a min or 2 less, but sometimes it'll go 5 mins past 30 mins. Basically an AFL game is 2ish hours of almost non stop running with the hard physical contact at almost every play. These guys are pretty much a cross between a triathlete and MMA fighter.

  • @enigmaticspirit1

    AFL footy is based on Keeping's Off and the rules are designed to allow all body types to participate.
    Players can move the ball via a kick or handball (hold the hall in one hand and use the other fist to knock it to a teammate)
    The ball is mostly kept moving. as being caught in possession of the ball is a turn over. The only time the ball stops moving is for a Free Kick (failure to move the ball on correctly),
    a Mark (to catch a kicked ball) when players are given 8 seconds to move the ball on...or a Ball-Up (stalemate when the ball is trapped in dispute) when the umpire throws the ball into the air to resume play.
    Teams try to create a miss-match advantage using size, speed, strength, changing team set up based on opponent and weather.
    Players will converge on the ball to gain possession, then spread out to provide a target when they gain possession.
    Strategies used are : man on man or zone defense : Screens and blocks to free up forwards : Fast break or controlled possession : of any combination switching constantly.
    Though many players have some special talent, marking (catching the ball), kicking etc. they all need to be multi-skilled and super fit to run hard all game.
    As noted : Unlike most sports that try to maintain possession of the ball at all costs... AFL footy is based on Keeping's Off Therefore caught Holding the Ball is a turnover.
    Contention arises as players will disguise intentionally holding the ball to stop play when outnumbered to prevent an advantage breakaway or to disrupt the momentum.
    Players are extremely skilled at doing this, so the umpire has to make a judgement call on not just the actions, but on situational awareness.
    Any attempt to slow play is not allowed. Often in a close finish the umpires will put the whistle away and let the players fight for possession to keep the ball alive.
    Then the umpire will award a soft free kick to break up congestion to keep the ball moving.
    This makes it very difficult for newbies to understand the flexible rules. This is referred to as The Spirit of the Game ie: Play the ball, not the man, not the clock.
    Keep watching... it comes with understanding the moment in the game

Most games last about 2.5 hours with breaks between quarters. This is one of the oldest football codes in the world, dating from 1858. The AFLW (women's league) season has just begun. When a player gets injured, which is extremely common, hamstring, broken ribs, dislocated shoulder, and the trainer/runners (who don’t play, water boys/girls) have to help a player off the ground, basically by carrying them, the game does not stop. Only time the game stops, is when a player is stretchered off.

    With the exception of injury stoppages there are no routine game stoppages or timeouts during the 20 minute quarters. This game just doesn’t stop. Some players can run up to 10km (6 mile) in one game. The game is like a hybrid of soccer and basketball played on a huge field but it’s a contact sport.

    Best way to “build strength” to play the sport, is just play it and don’t let a little pain stop you, get back up and keep running. 👍

      There is a more local and grassroots way for them to get into Footy. The USAFL has around 20 teams that play in a competition. It originally was just Aussie ex-pats getting together to do something that reminded them of home and some Americans wanting to try something new. The teams are set up similiar to our Junior Sports Clubs with all ages playing this awesome sport that we know and love. In fact before COVID, countries from around the world put together teams to come to Australia and compete in the World Cup and the final was played just before the Opening game of the AFL season.

      Feels like that depends a lot on your definition of average haha. They are hard hits. Like, if you’ve never experienced it and don’t know what’s coming you’ll get rag-dolled unless you’re 200kg.
      Admittedly, I’ve had the joy of always been skinny and playing AFL. I’m 6’2” though so not 100% tiny. (But still, sometimes tall and skinny is the worst combo)
      Having said that, your point about conditioning rings true. Without doing any extra gym work or anything, just playing once and training twice a week with the team, from 2015-2018 I went from skin and bones to low key cut. I remember one day in probably 2017 realising I could actually flex my pecs and being like… wait, you actually can flex your pecs!? When you don’t have them it’s almost unbelievable haha. But yeah I had a faint six pack, defined pecs, big biceps, decent shoulders, and INSANE calves from all the running
      Then I broke a collarbone late in 2018, and got severely concussed in my comeback game in 2019 and pretty much haven’t played since, but I’m getting back into it now for 2022. Body definitely needs to catch up to where it was at it’s peak haha

  • @BD-yl5mh
    @BD-yl5mh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting thing about the bounces is that it’s not something that happens that much during a game. Unless a player has lots of space to run or no options to kick to, most players will tend to run the first 15 metres and then kick, removing the need for a bounce.
    So while watching a game you might only see it happen roughly every 10 minutes during play.
    To demonstrate I just went to the stats from 6 random games from 2021 and found the total number of bounces in each of those games which were: 16, 8, 8, 2, 8, 13

    That American player is in my team. The Magpies or just the Pies. We call him American Pie with love. He had to train and wait 4 years to get into first grade and then he was still awful but he got there. When he got to the Semi Finals his parents flew over to watch him. Everyone knew when he had the ball, the crowd chanted USA and that is not heard at the MCG.
    What I love most is it is the oldest game of football anywhere. Australia had it 10 years before you had football. Rugby isn’t just one game. We have Rugby League, Rugby Union and they are different. We have Soccer, I think we have most sports because that is what we are raised doing. This game happened to keep Cricket players fit off season.
    These players are amazing athlete’s and they run an average of 20 Kilometre’s a game or 12.43 miles. As well as playing that game on the run. Pads would only slow them down. None of our football codes wear pads.
    I love all codes of football. Since I was a child I have followed my own American team. I watched my Dad play Rugby League until I was 4. He played Field Hockey too and he was a champion road cycle racer. We grow up with it.

They're always welcoming to people wanting to join.You never know, you might get asked to attend the combine if you're noticed, and show potential. If not, then you can still play in the amateurs in the US. Ton of fun to play. Skills are important, and with come with time with some practice, but if you're a natural athlete with speed, strength, stamina, height, agility, a good vertical leap, good evasion skills, good tackling skills, or a combination of any of the former, you've got some kind of chance if you're determined. That goes for women too. Women's league also in Australia. The AFLW. Got a lot of former pros from other sports in there, including the WNBA, Gold Medalists etc.

    Can you bounce the ball every step if you want. What it should have said you can't run more than 16 yards before bouncing the ball.. We normally go with 15 steps. And you can pass the ball behind, forward and sideways, via kicking or the handball.

    • @jordantripptree280
      @jordantripptree280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you must kick the ball more than 15 metres to get the unimpeded kick. So if the umpire thinks the kick was less then 15 metres they will yell *play on* which means anyone can attack the ball.

    • @consciousbeing1188
      @consciousbeing1188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a former SA amateur league player AND umpire with more than 200 games experience in each uniform. From my umpiring experience I can say that 15 steps is WAY too much to carry the ball. At full pace a top level AFL player will cover around 2 metres per stride so the general rule of thumb for an umpire is to count out 8-12 steps depending on the speed the player is doing. Of course, players with no umpiring experience always think that they should be allowed to run the ball further when they are pinged for carrying too far.

      @@consciousbeing1188 well I’ve played about 100 amateur games in Queensland and umpired one praccy match while recovering from an injury. My comments from both sides of the fence are: I think I’ve had one bounce in my whole career, and as for umpiring, mad respect to you my friend haha. It’s BLOODY HARD. (Admittedly, as I said it was a praccy match, I was injured and the team was desperate so I had to cover the entire ground and boundaries, but still, keeping your eyes on everything that’s happening and making those kind of decisions while you’re running your guts out is bloody hard. Decision making when you’re playing is mostly instinctual, but you do actually have to engage your proper thinking/judging brain to make umpiring calls)

      @@andrewstrongman305 that’s overselling a little. Those numbers have probably happened but that’s pretty exceptional. Most games won’t see anyone go much past 14km
      If you’re over 17km you’re into like the top 30 or so distances ever recorded.
      But Gaff in 2020 did average 13.3km, at least up to a certain point in the comp according to an article I found. That’s an insanely high average, but it does show that calling it 10-12km is maybe a little underselling it

  • @stanleywiggins5047
    @stanleywiggins5047 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    AFL is originally a Victorian game called VFL about 40 or 50 years ago.
    It was originally invented to keep Cricket players fit in the off season, with the wife's & family's watching.
    And it grew from there way back in the early to mid 1800's. There are teams in every state including minor league teams.

    • @shmick6079
      @shmick6079 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The game has never been called the VFL. One of the state leagues is the VFL, and the current AFL expanded from that in 1990.
      The VFA was around before the VFL, as was the SANFL and possibly the TFL and WAFL.
      The game itself has virtually always been known as Australian Football.

    There is actually a fair robust USAFL league played across most of the US now it is an amateur league but they are dedicated. Some of the other big thing about the game is it is over 150 years old and the teams are not privately owned but are nominally owned by the Fans who pay a yearly fee to be club members with the Australian Football league acting as over seers. There is a ridged Salary cap in fact some of your NFL players get paid more personally per year than these teams spend paying the whole team

    Don’t sell American football short. I’m Australian and love American football. Their pretty much neck and neck, AFL has a slight advantage cause I grew up with it. Whilst I think AFL is yes very hard and tough without pads, though I will say American football due to pads adds an extra amount of confidence, as in I can smash this cause we’re both amoured, this encouraging more committed tackels. I’ve been fortunate enough to play both sports, and yes I grew up on AFL so I’m used to being smashed, though I never prepared myself for being smashed by someone head first with a helmet and pads. I think AFL is a great free following sport, the best in the world. Though now I know the rules to NFL I think it’s a great stop start game that’s like a chess match.
