At 10:10 you passed-by the winner of the 1st Berlin Marathon. Günther Hallas, red shirt 425 „Nord“. He won in 2h44‘ back in 1974. Sneakers & water only.
That's when runners were "real, tough" no technology etc. water and probably during the time Bill Rodgers was winning his Boston Marathons. In 1974 he did a 2:19.
Congratulations, Ben! You still did amazing, I am so glad you always mention how much you can’t take running a sub 3h marathon for granted! It helps us mortals to keep on grinding! Haha! I also ran Berlin, it was my first ever marathon and I also struggled having gotten injured right in the week leading to it, but I did cross that finish line in just over 5h, so happy for that! :) Now to continue training and getting better! :)
Well done Ben, great content as always! I was in D, as an ordinary club runner found it very crowded and couldn't get on pace with all those bodies around. However I must say, having followed your 3:30 plan, it was spot on. I ended up with 3:32 but very fresh so thank you for a great plan, it was fantastic training advice. I have dublin at the end of the month which will be more open so I think I'll go sub 3:30 there, then I'm back into your plan for hopefully 3:20 at rotterdam. Also wore one of your singlets, very comfortable, no chaffing, great to wicked away moisture and great fit. Will have to buy more! Keep up the great job and I really enjoy the content....and yes shorts please! On to dublin and below that 3:30 and back into your fantastic training plans!
I’m so pleased and proud this was my first Marathon, the atmosphere and crowd was amazing… loved it and hard to beat! Sadly I didn’t get the time I wanted as I suffered a foot issue at mile 20, I was on course for a 5.10hr finish… 20mins better than I wanted, sadly crossed the line at 6hrs on the button.
Ben you have proved you are mentally strong, knowing that you were struggling from half way and be able to commentate, smile and film when your legs were probably screaming to stop is exceptional. Also lovely to see Sarah smiling and being with you she is a gem and would love to see her channel back again. Well done!
Loving these videos, the blog style is humble, honest, and most importantly, relatable. We all face challenges with 'shoulda, woulda, coulda' and this is a great example of GREAT HUMANS doing GREAT things! x
Lovely how you run a sub 3 hour for fun, i just did my first marathon every today and couldn’t break 5 hours 😂. Anyway great video keep it up and cant wait to see your run at Valencia.
It’s a bit of a comfort to find even experienced and far better runners than me found it tough at stages- big difference being, I was nowhere near sub 3! Great to see your weekend play out and a dig-deep effort to sail over the line. I found the sun/ heat as the day went on to be a test. Not as much as waterboarding myself at every hydration point. Don’t think I’ve taken so much water up the nose since swimming lessons. But I was lucky enough to be there and got it done. Great experience 👍
Hi Ben, congrats to another sub 3 marathon 🎉. I really like that you try out new approaches. Sometimes things work, sometimes they do not. Still good to try something new. And I really appreciate your humbleness. One of the main reasons why I like your content and your videos so much. It is hard work and that makes you so authentic. Have so much fun in Australia - I love Australia so, so much ❤. Already look forward to watching your video with all the impressions from Australia 😊
Awesome, just seen this video, catalogues the whole weekend for me. Was great to meet yourself and Sarah on the shakedown. 3.22 for me in the end. Lots to work on!! Sean.
Been looking forward to this Ben…. 🎉🎉🎉 thanks for taking the time to do the video of the race for us all to enjoy. And to correct you .. you do have a stack of natural talent, many sub 3 hour marathons prove that ❤❤
Well done Ben. It was good to see that even for an experienced marathon runner it doesn't always go to plan but you still got it done. I ran Clarendon Marathon on Sunday as my first. Not sure it was the best choice as a first marathon with lots of climbing but I quite enjoyed it. Berlin looks fantastic, very tempting. Caught a glimpse of Mo from the Running Channel running behind at about 11.45
Awesome video Ben! Congratulations on yet another marathon. Must have been very special being there for the 50th. I’m attempting my first full marathon this week in Melbourne. I’m doing it for my dad who passed away in February. He always told me to attempt the impossible. I really hope to see you on the day. You’ve been my main inspiration for getting serious about my running. Thank you so much 👍.
Congratulations and loved the video! It wasn't my day either (major understatement) I am a middle to back of the pack runner and it was just so terribly crowded (I envy the "space" you had for your race), and my pace of runners seemed to have forgotten, or never knew, about runner's etiquette. Lots of shoving, cutting off, tripping and I even had someone run right into the back of me because they were clowning for their phone and not looking where they were running. Also picked the wrong day to go to expo (Friday at 1) and it was a zoo. Anyway, I finished and, I agree, the weather and spectators were awesome and that finish line was pretty special. Good luck in your upcoming races. Chicago next for me 🙂
yeh i havent tried low mileage and more intensity as ive been training a year, so no time yet, but ive had lower mile weeks with track races and i feel sharper when im back on the high mileage tbh. although alot of ppl say you dont need mileage just intensity. my intensity was 10k efforts for 10*3 minutes one marathon training pace run and all else pace-run. within 6 weeks i was sub 3 marahton shape. my background was nothing crazy; 35-45 mile / weeks inconsisentyly, no hard runs again, more of hobby jogging, just those 6 weeks i went to 50 miles. i'd say my half time would have been about 6:30 min/mile at the time. long runs just works for me. and i realised you need to be on at least 50 miles to be hitting your potential.
Congrats Ben on another awesome sub 3 marathon, ive been Watching as many you tubers Berlin marathon coverage & recap videos as I can, never thought watching people running in groups around the streets could be so addictive, onwards & upwards, see you in the next one, next one to watch is Ben is running Chanel see how he got on, keep up the good work Ben Parkes & Sehra :-)
Wow you did Berlin aswell? From my perspective under 3 hours is still incredible!! I managed negative splits for the first time at the Berlin marathon, tenth marathon, very proud ☺☺☺
Great time, Ben👍. I was also there on Sunday, and it was an incredible race. My first major and loved every second, well apart from the last 5kw. Amazing crowds
Enjoyed that - wished you luck in the coral before the start. Can see myself in your video behind you up until the 10km mark 😊 Crossed the line in 2:42 😅
Great video mate. Reminds me that everyone is human and the marathon is a very individual experience for everyone. Look forward to seeing you in Melbourne this weekend. Will have to tell you how to pronounce it like a local. 😁
They're back! Yes! As is the helloeverybody. Great to see Ben-rah out racing again. Ben, you are a much more experienced runner than me, however I recommend increasing your mileage on softer tracks and trails to reduce injury risk (although tree roots can be worse!). Windsor great park has a good mix of softer road and hard and soft trails. Did the Windsor half marathon last weekend.
So envious of you qualifying for Berlin every year, haha, but congrats! Btw, please don’t waste your money reviewing the Adizero Adios Evo. Most viewers already have a pretty good idea of what the shoe can do. As an independent reviewer, which I totally respect, your hard earned money can be much better spent somewhere else, such as racing in Tokyo some day 😄
why on earth have I never thought about using imodium before races... literally my last 3 races i've had to stop during the race, no matter how many times I go before-hand
I didn't know you were there, Ben! I watched your other Berlin video the night before the race. I loved Berlin and I really loved the perfect weather. It wasn't my best day but it was far from my worst day and I felt great the whole race. Congrats on your finish.
So true about mileage. I ran a 3.12 at Chester on Sunday but I was on for a sub 3 until 36km. Legs seized up with cramp. I’ve only been able to run between 20km-40km a week for the last three months and before that needed a month off completely due to injury. There really is no substitute for miles.
Fantastic video, you made me feel better about my run as things didn't go to plan. Great race the biggest issue i had was slower runners in my coral forcing me to stop so many times and started to get quad pains in 2nd half of the run. But finished strong.
Looking forward to the video in the coming weeks when you run the Melbourne Marathon. The vibe and atmosphere when you enter the MCG for the last few hundred meters is sensational.
Oh I missed you at the Albert Park Run today :(. I did not know you where there today. I will try to look out for you in the Melbourne Marathon tommorow.
I find it absolutely insane that 50 years of being a marathon Major course and they still haven't done something about the cups at drinks stations.. water is THE most important thing for runners to be getting in and 80% goes on the floor.. I can't fathom it
maybe invent a simple one use cup that uses the same amount of plastic but has a beak? Tooling of course costs a lot in plastic stuff but there are plenty of marathons run.
@@JustBrowsing777you’re also less likely to slip/twist an ankle as they soften from the water and collapse when you step on them.. weird set up with plastic
I ran the Berlin Marathon twice now. Honestly, the plastik cups aren't really a problem. The mental part about it might be the bigger issue, when you get a plastik cup by surprise and don't know right away how to hold it to get the water down.
I agree, it’s complete carnage the first few drink stations, mainly because there’s no signage to warn runners that they’re coming, they’re just there and then everyone panics and try to get to those sh*tty cups and throw them everywhere so you have to be on the lookout so you don’t trip.
Would have loved to have said Hello in Sydney next week, but cricket season starts Saturday. Entering Centennial Park during the Sydney Marathon last month, I think half the Maurten gel was smeared across my face. Always hard to run and get a gel down, I know your struggle.
Ben, you are a very very very very good runner!🎉 I can only dream of beating your PR! Anyways, like this vid... i like most of your vids... wish you the best for all your marathons!! Cheers!!
Well up for some BP Soars marathon shorts. Is there anychance of the green & orange singlets going on as a bundle again-I seem to keep missing it!?!?! Well done on the race and vlogg-great as always. Dont waste £400 on them 1 use shoes, you could pick up a Suzuki Jimny for that sort of money...

hey Ben, congrats on the marathon. I am running a marathon myself in about a month and I just bought the same shoes you run in. However I am having a little problem with the shoes, because at the middle part of the shoe on the inner side the sole is lifting a bit upwards to wrap around the foot, but my feet are a bit wider than that and so the sole ends up poking by foot causing blissters. Got any suggestions on how to fix that without having to change shoes?

Holy shit what an absolute legend that guy. Still running it 50 years later!!
Thank you so much! I did Hamburg in April in 3:22:44 bought your plan afterwards and finished Berlin in 2:56:29.
Oh wow!!!!!. I'm just getting very good sub 3 vibes these days....
It's so cool to see that this worked for you. Congrats

Class video as ever.
I'd say no on a Evo 1 review, I like reviews of shoes I might buy and there's no way in the world I'll buy that!

Should come pop over to NZ and try get in for the Auckland marathon or the half at the start of November. Not the quickest on earth but very scenic.

I would be really surprised if you didn't take a part in the marathon! Congrats! 🔥
hey Ben, congrats on the marathon.
