  • It's legal to drive your first 90 days in the Philippines with a US driver's license. Here's my experience driving here my first 30 days!

I got pulled over there last year along Taft Avenue on a short visit for lane swerving and the 2 Manila traffic enforcers let me go after showing them my California license. They told me to be careful next time and smile and apologized for wasting my time. You're totally right, just enjoy your time there and have a lot of patience doing things. The government offices can have long crazy lines and people there don't get paid much so bringing down your expectation helps a lot. Try to meet more locals, you'll learn a lot from them.

I still love driving in the Philippines more than the US. In the US most drivers only look in the front, they are mostly unaware of their surroundings and that is why there is a lot of accidents here everyday.

Hello Abram! Just found your vlog and watched your traffic video. Yes, I made the same experience some weeks ago when I was on vacation. Fortunately I didn't have to drive but my Filipina girlfriend. And during these weeks I learned *a lot*! The Filipinos are the most friendly and careful drivers I have ever seen! It's not their access to be somewhere as fast as possible at all costs but to reach their target safely and take care of the other people. Many Filipinos start their journey with a prayer before starting the engine. They thank God for everything he has done for them and the family so far and then ask for a safe travel. Of course also asking God to protect the car from malfunctioning or or breakdown. Then they start carefully. When moving into heavy traffic they use to operate the car's horn to ask the other drivers for extra care. That's so different compared to most of the other countries I've been as usually blowing the horn means "go away stupid it's my turn and my right!". An additional reason for driving carefully is of course also the state of many streets which is a result of lack of funds plus extreme weather conditions (lots of rain, mud, underminings, potholes,...). Nobody can afford to damage the car nor risk health. And that's good! Finally: try to spend some time in Manila. If you master this you'll master everything! :)

Great video. I sent it to friends and family in the US so they can see what I'm talking about. I'll be on four wheels before long as we are looking at vehicles right now. Currently have an e-trike and a Honda 150cc enduro bike. I'm experiencing the same mayhem but on a smaller scale here in Cavite on the bike.

Much appreciated! Plenty more videos to come. I feel much safer in a car than on a motorbike. It’s nice to be able to bring more people at once or transport stuff you buy easier. The major downside is you’ll reach your destination much slower in a car than on a bike

Hahahaha Yes, filipino time is real. And, it's worse than Microsoft time. I would suggest learning the peak hours that gets MORE than crazy here. Not just in Manila, either. Anywhere in Metro Manila has peak times such as mornings approx 6-8:30 for school kids and workers, lunch times approx 11:45-2 and early evenings approx 5-7:30. These times are what I have observed anyway. Christmas times are even more crazy and it's traffic all day long, so like you said, relax and keep yourself amused because that road rage thing everyone has back in the states doesn't go real well here. If you find yourself stressed driving here, take a trike, jeepney, or bus and sit back to relax.

Merging into American highway is scarier because of the speed of the traffic, fatalities are more likely. Merging in the Philippine traffic is crazy but because of the traffic and slow pace, it's less likely that somebody dies. You have to feel the flow, look at the other diver or assertiveness of the other driver. Sometimes I'm in a hurry, I am more assertive, and get my way into traffic, sometimes, I feel more giving or feel the other party more assertive
    and give way.

    • @abramsphilippinevlog
      @abramsphilippinevlog  ปีที่แล้ว

yeah totally agree, driving in the Philippines really isn't that hard because you very rarely, if ever, go over 30mph(50km/h). In the US that's the speed you when you drive past homes.
On the highway in the US it's common to go 50-70mph(115km/h)
The people on motorbikes are the scariest thing for me still

As a foreigner I agree, it does help to have some one with you who knows the roads especially in metro Manila. Waze will often let you drive in circles or one way roads.
Just having your English license converted into a Filipino one isn't just as easy like that. I believe you need a valid visa of atleast 3 or 6 months right now? It used to be 1 year valid visa 5/6 years ago, making it almost impossible.
After driving here for some time you do get used to how 90% of the comote drivers drive. You will know exactly which pick up truck will try to sneak in or pass on the emergency lane to get a head start for example.

Cool! Just keep it current at the LTO. I liive in Gubat Sorsogon in Bicol providence FYI. I have two cars here and have been living here for a decade now. Here is the BEST advice: "Just be nice to everyone" Trust me it works here. The USA is falling apart and surrounded by violence everywhere. The Philippines is chilled out and respect you and not try to dominate you. Just be chill with people in life and lifer is GREAT here in the Philippines! I've been here for a decade now and 46 yrs old I also drive 2 cars and one of them is like your's as I have 4 little kids here. The other is a 90's Toyota that is all modified and too just as I had in the states. They even let me compete in high end car audio comps here
Hey Filipino's you are wonderful and I have always been treated very well. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to have a great life here with my Wife and 4 kids Myself being a White foreigner gives me lots of attention so Thanks. But it's a 2 way street because as a Foreigner I must have good behaveour all the time.Reputation is very important here.I'll admit I don't want to live in NCR Manila it's just too many people. Which is why I live in Bicol with my Family.
Some last advice guys, Stop drinking and going to bars all the time. My wife of 3 years of dating and 7 years of marriage would literally kill me if I was cheating on on her. (Joke lang,) I've lived here 10 years now and stopped drinking 8 years ago. The easiest way is to just do not cheat or give yourself the ability to cheat.I will subscribe and good luck in this beautiful country!!

the drivers are not even using a signal light if they are changing lanes from the left or the right that is why they are always accidents most of them don't follow the rules they make their own rule. When they are on the streets they don't give way to others and even if someone is crossing in the pedestrian lane they don't even stop they don't even wait until the pedestrian has crossed to the other side of the street and they still keep driving no discipline at all not unlike in North America we give way to each other we follow the rules we let the pedestrian cross the street and Bus had a time schedule departing and arriving and stop at the bus stop. In the Philippines buses and jeepneys, they stop everywhere which gives traffic. I notice about the road they don't have enough traffic lights or traffic control as well

We live in an opposite life as a Pinoy here in US always carefull that someody will rear end me bec someone not paying attention on road which accident happened a lot in the city. my wife got rear ended last few months ago with her 17yrs old crv and luckily nobody get harm and it happened in regular small town road who not paying attention in the road when car in front stop.Luckily the SUV still working and totaled by others insurance and git $6k and able still to use due to some back damage and cosmetic only.
And yet in Phil driving like crazy and yet nobody get into accident. You will definitely become linoy by heart later on adopting our culture. 😜

for me driving in italy is the 1 most crazies place. 1. they are more aggressive drivers, 2 a lot of violation, 3 parking space, 4 also traffic in the cities no u turn like in the philippines you must go in the right way to U turn or else you will pay violation 5 police active, 6 so many camera after a days will come to your home a ticket to pay a lot of violation if you dont pay your license will be banned. 7 you cannot stay in the left way because the left way only for passing. 8 a lot of restrict zone if you mistake to enter that place you will pay ticket again and again. 9 scooter is more in italy than philippines. the only worst in the philippines is a corrupt mmda!! but in italy mmda dont accept money if you give money mmda in italy they will bring you in jail !
