    EPISODE 10
    Alan isn't a day boat. His crew will be at sea, or in the ice, for weeks. So this expedition boat needs some heads - or a loo, toilet, WC, or (rather public) convenience. In this episode I install the heads, and get on with some other jobs. I finish off with that chat...yes, the Patreon chat.
    (the opening minute was onboard camera sound recording as I messed up the mic settings - hence the tinny audio)
    Additional on-location Arctic footage by danbernardphotography.com/
    Products mentioned:
    Zinsser 1-2-3 Bullseye Plus Primer
    Hempel Bilge and Locker Paint
    Starch-based home-compostable liners 25L from BinLiners.co.uk
    A2 Stainless steel hex bolts, washer and bolts
    Panaracer kevlar adhesive strip
    25mm nitrile rubber grommet
    Model: NME A/S (Husnes, Norway) 7.5m TELB
    Engine: Bukh DV48 turbo diesel

      Catsan it is really absorbent and kills the smell of fish in your fridge so should do really good on an expedition so if you need to soak up spilled oil, or Diesel, or even throw some in the head when you have had one of those number twos that really pong, I designed one of these unsinkable life rafts when I was around twelve years old and I am now sixty-one, brings back memories, so thanks to you and the team.

    So a couple of recommendations for the head...
    First seal the exposed foam with resin, so it's easy to clean and can't become impregnated with water, scent, or other things.
    Second I would rework your 2 soft liners to somehow underlap and positively secure to the seat so that no portion of the fiberglass below the seat is exposed. Splashes and misses happen and it will be more sanitary, easier to clean, and your less likely to have a day where you need to dig the bag out of the bottom of the bucket from when someone's excrement grabs and drags it down into the pit of nastiness. If you can't find a easy way to secure the soft liners the other way to do it would be to make your bucket bigger then the seat opening, and use the compression force from siting on it to secure the liners.

    And just because you're using it for work. Doesn't mean you shouldn't make it as comfortable as possible.
    Now it seems like you're going out of your way to make it uncomfortable.
    And if nothing else you could at least put a twisting mechanism on the bucket so it spins the bag after every use. Ceiling it up from the atmosphere in the boat.

    With regards to the compostable bin liners - these are only compostable in industrial composters (these are heated to 40C and contain microorganisms) and as such would take a very long time to degrade if dropped overboard. They will eventually break down in a home compost heap but are unlikely to break down in an ocean with little heat and microorganisms to digest the bin liner. I don't want to sound preachy but please don't drop them overboard. It may take up lots of space but it is likely to be the same as dropping a normal plastic bag.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Daniel. The liners are 100% starch, and will only contain organic waste. They are a large step beyond 'biodegradable' ones that are still plastic, but break down into small pieces quickly. I understand if you don't think that starch bags should be in the ocean, but these will sink, and aren't shaped so that any marine life could get stuck in them. In essence, once on the sea floor, they are as innocuous as a rock, and will eventually break up and be eaten.

      @@AlexHibbertOriginals What you call are made from starch, this is plastic called PLA (Polylactic acid). The monomer is typically made from fermented plant starch such as from corn, cassava, sugarcane or sugar beet pulp.
      from Wiki:
      PLA is degraded abiotically by three mechanisms:
      Hydrolysis: The ester groups of the main chain are cleaved, thus reducing molecular weight.
      Thermal degradation: A complex phenomenon leading to the appearance of different compounds such as lighter molecules and linear and cyclic oligomers with different Mw, and lactide.
      Photodegradation: UV radiation induces degradation. This is a factor mainly where PLA is exposed to sunlight in its applications in plasticulture, packaging containers and films.
      Composting: PLA is biodegradable under industrial composting conditions, starting with chemical hydrolysis process, followed by microbial digestion, to ultimately degrade the PLA. Under these conditions (40-50 °C), PLA can decompose into water and carbon dioxide in as 50-90 days. Environments without the necessary conditions will see very slow decomposition akin to that of non-bioplastics, not fully decomposing for hundreds or thousands of years.
      On biodegradable bags, it is even written that they cannot be tied up, as this greatly extends the composting process.

    Not sure if it relevant, but years ago when I was a home siding contractor I was taught when caulking or using glue adhesive from a caulk gun to finish it by wetting a finger and running it along the bead. The forces the caulk/glue into the cracks and spreads the surface of the caulk on both sides. It makes the caulk/glue adhere better, last longer, and seal better. Maybe you did this and just didnt use it in the video, but I figured I would offer this little nugget for future caulking/gluing. Its a bit messy on your fingers so have 2 rags/paper towels handy, 1 dry and 1 wet. When you run a caulk line, whip off the excess from your finger on the dry rag and then use the wet rag to clean the finger. A small cup of water works well for wetting your finger.

      Thanks Mike - yes I use all varieties of wet rags, wet fingers, and silicone shaping tools for sealants.

    Instead of leaving the foam underneath the bucket unsealed, maybe you could glue in a slightly larger bucket to place the current one in. Or, when the model of the current bucket allows it to be stacked, glue in an identical one.
    Especially if it's open cell foam, I would rather spend an extra hour to seal it, than dealing with the consequences of a possible spill. If the waste would be absorbed by the foam, it would probably be a nightmare to clean it.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly there's no bucket that's slight bigger, although I could use another of the same as you say, and lose some capacity. Sealing the foam for cleaning is something I've thought about but not had a winner for yet. The foam is closed cell, so it won't absorb much.

    Your head isn't my choice for a live-aboard situation but it's perfectly fine for an expedition situation. Better than what we use for river running and desert hiking here in Utah, US.
