I've always felt the word "content" is dehumanizing, but for art. It's an insidious brainworm, if you start thinking about the stuff you're making as "content" it's easy to just make it more generic and less interesting.
I've seen several channels fall into the "okay I'm generic and popular and a pogging shill now" trap, each time I immediately unsubscribe. I watch TH-cam because I want to have a parasocial relationship to cool smart analytic people, not because I want to consume a mass-produced product :V

  • @MeatSnax
    @MeatSnax ปีที่แล้ว +1

Crazy how, despite ImSims being more popular than they maybe ever have been, they're still giving companies a hard time. I really think studios should lean more into stuff like Gloomwood and Kenshi, "retro" games with crazy mechanical depth. It's just not worth the risk, especially with people putting out stuff like Stalker Gamma for FREE.

  • @neofromthewarnerbrothersic145
    @neofromthewarnerbrothersic145 ปีที่แล้ว +1

"But Charl', what even is an immersive sim?"
Actual answer: "immersive sim" is a fad label used to describe a particular micro-genre of (usually first person) RPG. They try to provide the freedom of choice you get from a tabletop RPG, but they are typically single player instead of party-based. They usually include some form of character progression, but have less emphasis on XP and leveling.
I'm sorry but when games like Weird West are calling themselves "immersive sim", it's just gone too far. If that is an ImSim, then I guess Fallout 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate, and Divinity: Original Sin are just turn-based ImSims? If a first person perspective isn't part of the genre, why does it matter if it's real time or turn-based?
To be clear, I love the games. Just hate the undefinable, vibes-based fad label. It's not a genre, it's a natural progression of games growing deeper, more complex, and providing more player agency. Turning those characteristics to a particular subgenre doesn't make sense. Our obsession with shoving everything into a neat little box with a neat little label does more harm than good. No developer should set out to create an "immersive sim", they should set out to create games that are deep, complex, immersive, and full of player agency.
This is the windmill at which I must tilt, and the hill on which I must die. It is fated. It is known.

I've been following your channel for a little while now, always loved the passion you put into your videos. It's become one of my favorites alongside people like Jacob Geller, and as someone who is also struggling heavily with depression, your speech about the desire to create art in the face of marketability cut a little too deep.
TH-cam's greatest strength to me has always been about enjoying the shared experience of making some cool/funny/interesting shit, for the absolute fuck of it, because it's fun. Some of the most enjoyment I've extracted from this site was watching shoddily made Gmod machinimas, stick figure flash animations, lego stopmotion, youtube poops, wonderful covers of my favorite songs etc etc. You're touching on stuff that's much deeper than fighting an algorithm, stuff people like Nietzsche and Camus and Proust have clamored on and on about. Humans were never meant to be "products" or "brands", toddlers don't pick up crayons with the market in mind. Art is a sanctuary we create for ourselves, it has the power to color all aspects of life and that sense of humanity will always matter more than notoriety in the long run. And fuck what anyone else says, video games are art!
I like to think this kind of stuff still matters to a lot of people, like myself, and we're rooting for you. I don't have the means to donate at the moment, but the minute I do I most definitely will. Keep up the fight brother

Hi !! I think you should really take a quick look at "Shadows of Doubt". It's a procedurally generated immersive-sim detective game set in a voxel-rendered city open world. It seems quite unique in its game design and the only thing I can think of to really compare it to is maybe the Blade Runner adventure game. And I find it criminally un-covered on the internet. The game is in closed beta as of right now.
Also you should really check-out "Fortune's Run" as I am baffled by how little coverage it got considering how good its first demo is. It's an immersive-sim with fast-fps, melee, stealth and parkour with a relatively unique art-style using pre-rendered sprites and some of the best looking and stylish environments I have seen recently in a game of that scale and a great soundtrack. What I am trying to say here is that this game I think as a lot of personnality and potential and it would be a shame if it could not meet the end of its development. Right now, the devs are only working on it as a hobby since the very small team is not receiving nearly enough money to sustain themselves, let alone hire a new member. A solid demo is available on the steam page.
Anyway that's all I wanted to say outside of wishing you good health and a great new year.

"Content" to me is like daily or weekly videos of a series, they're just there to be watched and forgotten about, mostly mindless entertainment.
I would say videos like yours are more interesting than that, they're quite informative and speculative and I'm always interested to watch them.
This isn't a "content" channel to me in the same way that Hbomberguy's isn't, dude does like 2 videos a year but it's always fun to see them and know that he's not been abducted by aliens yet.
In general I don't think it's possible for anyone to truly game the algorithm and make a successful channel, you'll notice that when most people do get a trending video they tend to just make that one idea their whole channel and it never really works, you can't catch lightning in a bottle repeatedly and they key point for me is that they usually weren't trying when it happened.
Just doing whatever is totally valid and should be way more encouraged than just endlessly pumping out content, it's so antithetical to the idea of being creative that it hurts my brain even though I currently create nothing.

But... But it's not hard to define an immersive sim! If a game simulates reactions of the world, and the player can immerse themself into the game by using intuitive (to the player) approaches for any given tasks, then this is an immersive sim. Otherwise, a game uses scripted reactions, or player have to employ the right solution in order to progress... or both.

I have been on TH-cam for many years, and its evident that what was once a video sharing site has become an insidious workplace where the people are all but removed and replaced with an unfeeling band of machines that do everything. The algorithm is just a glorified board of directors that favors one particular set of “content” over the videos that are filled with care, attention, and real humanity. Its not fair or right, but it makes millions.

The only thing that changed was how Marie looks uncanny in a good way now, like a kigurumi suit that went through a warzone, rather than just a weirdly dissonant 3d model of an anime girl - and that makes sense, because she's a combat doll. Her looking like that is part of the universe.

I also just went and watched the "Revealed" trailer from 2 years ago, i.e. the first trailer ever released for the game, and lo and behold you can see her in her apartment in the last 30 seconds (edit. in her old model form).
She was also *heavily* featured in *all* promotional art for the kickstarter, where she even appeared in the page's main banner (edit. as a 2d illustration, which she looks much better as honestly. But that's also true for JC Denton, to be fair).
Also, that first demo i mentioned earlier? Yeah that had *third person mode,* so you could see what Marie looked like all the way back then (edit. you can very much still get that demo, along with the new one, and test for yourself).

The original "Peanut" design was made by a Japanese sculptor who held the copyright to the work and the picture of it that was featured on the wiki. Everyone was cool with it for years but finally the people who ran the site decided it was time to retire it because the copyright situation made fanworks like games a minefield of red tape and 173 also stole away the original artist's intent for his work. As I understand it, it was an amicable decision.

What matters to us is your mental health, Charl. Don't let The System get you down, and remember to give the Saucy Boi scritches. Happy Holidays.
On the subject of Vampire: The Masquerade, I generally recommend the 20th Anniversary Edition over 5th ed. Partly because I just don't like the changes they made, both mechanically and in lore. But partly because, due to all those changes, older (and thus cheaper) books don't transfer over as easily to the new game. V20 is basically the culmination of all the previous editions, while being metaplot agnostic (except _Beckett's Jyhad Diary,_ which is "Oops, All Metaplot"; but it's also a really good book and one I recommend for a one stop shop collection of all the "goings on" in VtM). Moreover, V20 is closer to the VtM that people would be familiar with from VtM: Bloodlines.

That last part really hit home for me. As a musician people dont see what artists, animators, videographers, musicians, etc as art anymore. Its just Content to be consumed. Its really really sad that most people dont treat what people do with merit anymore and the systems you have to abide by to make money doing what you love are forcing people into paths they dont want do go down. Its sad and depressing but you cant give up on shit. I couldve probably hopped on a trend and gained a following by now but i didnt because that wouldnt be me. that wouldnt be my art. and it sucks to see people who are legitimately talented lose passion for their art because of the system and the content cycle. TL;DR MAKE YOUR ART MAN!!! LET YOUR BALLS HANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m learning I’ve had a very different idea of Immersive sim than everyone else. (Assumed it was a sub-genre too, like Deus Ex was an ‘Immersive sim’ RPG)
I always took it as games that intertwine their game mechanics with their world, or use in world solutions to create an immersive sim-like experience without becoming ‘meta’. So I kinda wonder what these would actually be called.
Like, apart from Deus Ex, prime examples to me are: Iron Lung or Carrier Command 2. Games that ask the player to interact with the world in ways that ‘feel’ realistic (not doing commands through hotkeys but having to interact with terminals and pilot your machines as if you were in the seat) and pull you into the game world. Far out examples would be like Cruelty Squad. I’d also say things like Nier Automata’s Menu being inter-grated into the gameworld in story and gameplay would be an “immersive sim” element, same with stuff like Signalis’ radio mechanic.
I’m obviously wrong about what I thought immersive sim meant, but I really wish we had a word for games that blur the line between the game and world like that, because it really leads to memorable and immersive experiences.

My dude, I don't really think you know what you're talking about when talking about the Vampire The Masquerade tabletop. Corebook is all you need. Yes, it's a lore dense game, but most of the characters in-game don't even know a percentage of what is going on in the whole World of Darkness universe lore-wise.
No need to discourage people from picking up the game due to needing something like the Book of Nod to play (which is more of a prop to buy than anything)

i really do agree that when it comes to people and their creations, undermining yourself by becoming a so-called content creator instead of a true artist honing their craft (whether it be through music, or in this case a visual art such as video-making) just to pump out videos that pander to the masses instead of what *you* really want to create, really does diminish individuality, if i am interpreting the message correctly. i am very sorry for what you've gone through recently, and i hope 2023 is an excellent year for you! keep doing what you're doing man

To me, an immersive sim is a game where the world feels alive even without your involvement, where everything feels thought out enough to be a real things that could actually happen (in terms of things and systems making sense, regardless of whether they're sci-fi or fantasy or anything like that), where gameplay, game design, and the world itself meld together seamlessly into a fantastic experience that slots right in with the world you're exploring. An immersive sim is usually open world to some degree, at least in terms of being able to explore freely at your own pace and order, with gameplay that inherently is welcoming to your own ingenuity and ideas for solving issues and advancing through the game, with engines designed to facilitate that kind of openness. An immersive sim more often than not also pays special attention to sound design as well as graphics and atmosphere, not necessarily by being cutting edge, but by being in harmony with one another in order to give you the sense that you are in the game, hence immersing you. An immersive sim is a game that responds to your input in spite of being set in a world that functions fine even without you. Where your actions have consequences, and choices/methods you use are reflected in the rest of the game.
These are just the thoughts at the top of my head when thinking of a definition of an immersive sim
