I don't know if you've played it before but dark messiah of might and magic is a definite must as well (and worth playing a few times for the multiple gameplay styles and endings).

just little fun bit of trivia dark messiah of might and magic started life as arx fatalis 2 but ubisoft had the developers rebrand it under the might and magic franchise
Last Hero of Nostalgaia feels like an honest love-letter to an era of gaming that's passed, but just barely. It's referential but at the same time earnest in making those references. I like it.
For the Monomyth at 35:05, I think that’s meant to be a fairy ring, it symbolizes the presence of fairies and can be either good or bad luck depending on tradition.
If you liked Monomyth, check out Lunacid! Extremely good atmospheric King's Field-like, though it focuses more on exploration and immersion than Monomyth.
@@aryantzh2028 I mean he literally said the combat is pretty barebones, which yeah it looked like it, and he also implied he was disappointed there were no stealth mechanics when the enemy didn't react to the bottle he threw. Otherwise, if he liked it then he liked it. Can't expect him to make stuff about the game that's bad if he didn't think anything in it was bad. Also it's supposedly an Alpha or Pre-alpha version of the game, so his opinion on it would naturally be less harsh than if it was a completed product. Since I'm guessing you have a negative opinion of the game, could you name something in the game you didn't like? Everything else we saw from the video is stuff that many could figure out on their own, highly doubt that he "knows everything about it because the devs paid him". I'd put your torch and pitchfork away unless you got proof that this is both something the Monomyth devs do and something that Pine would agree to, such as him accepting a similar deal in the past. In addition, as Ellie said above, it is illegal on TH-cam to not disclose a sponsorship deal, and has been for years. Google "TH-cam disclosure of sponsorships" and look for the FTC guidelines if you're interested. I'm sure that some people do it of course, but I don't see why Pine would play with fire like that when he could just acknowledge a sponsorship as he has done many times in the past.
@@aryantzh2028 Or he just... likes it? I feel like if it was a payed promotion he would have mentioned that this was was an early pre-alpha build that's missing a lot of features and polish. I think you're just being a bit too cynical.
Monomyth looks really promising and amazing! I hope they continue the game! It looks really good, I love the immersive sim like the way you're able to cook bread and wash blood off, it's really good!
Wow. That first game uses "Dark Souls" weapon lore system so much better than dark souls ever has. It actually turns the small tidbits on the weapon into a useful way to explore areas you may have not before as well as learn about the game through your own pace.
My man - this is easily my favorite series to watch in the entirety of TH-cam. And I watch it for free. I have so much respect for you, IP. Thank you for these videos
What I really liked about Monomyth was the fact that you found by yourself the cooking mechanics, and not having the game tell you everything. These things make it even more rewarding
If Monomyth was made 20 years ago the developer would probably be a Triple A studio by now. The game gives me nostalgia somehow, the guys making it know their stuff.
Damn sometimes I wonder what taking a hard drive with a few dozen of these modern no bs no internet required games back to the late 80s or early 2000s would feel like hell throw in a full pc and see how the heads explode.
I felt that exact same way watching it. I dunno what it was, the layout, the mechanics, the objects... just felt like I've played it before, back when PC game boxes were the size of boardgames.
@@MasamuneVIII nahhhh. The game is okay I guess but if your playing on console the lockpicking is borderline impossible. Though to be fair I didn't give it the best shot since I littlerally could not lock pick with my controllers
As a bitch for immersive sims, I think this is the first time I got genuinely pumped to play the full version of a game in this series. Come at me Monomyth, let's stack some boxes and break ourselves together. (Also, the feather and jump mechanics really reminded me of breaking Morrowind)
Dude Monomyth is looking super interesting! Everything from its font, to the art style, to the delightful jank makes that game look like it's the King's Field 5 that we never got. I hope that the developer is making good progress on that game because I am really looking forward to it from what I have seen from this video.
monomyth always gave me really strong arx fatalis vibes and I'm incredibly happy someone is finally making a spiritual successor, I definitely wouldn't call it a souls like but still happy he's covering it because its delightfully underrated
The Last Hero of Nostalgaia was a pretty good game - I loved the remembrance feature and wish there were more NPC questlines that relied on that. hopefully Coatsink continues and improves on the next sequel (I hope) of this game. Edit: hey they are making a DLC for The Last Hero of Nostalgaia called "The Rise of Evil" I'm super excited for it.
The heavy sword spin move at 10:03 is a reference to Nier: Automata. It even has the detail at the end of the move where 2B would buckle under the weight of the sword after spinning it and momentarily struggle to lift it back up
Are you sure about that? Seems just like a standard heavy sword spin to me, but I never played NieR:Automata, so maybe it's really obviously a reference.
@@myrech Wait, why are you questioning it if you've never played Nier yourself? How would you know if it was or wasn't? Why even bother questioning them then? Just seems weird.
I think you might be mistaken for another gane entirely, because 2B doesnt hold the sword and spin with it, but instead spins it with the NFCS around her effortlessly. As a result, she also doesn't buckle under its weight since she never actually holds the large sword in a horizontal spin move.
@@Davenzoid You may not have seen it because it needs the charge attack chip to be equipped but if you do the charge attack with a heavy sword she spins around at least 3 times and does this little animation at the end
So insipred by the video i tried out moonscars, which was an enjoyble experience to me but after a few days i was browsing through steam and got a game recommended to me deeming it similar to moonscars so i got since it was literally 1 dollar bc of the sale it's name is Skautfold: shrouded in sanity what i can say about it is that it has a really strong atmoshpere of mystery and if anyone likes the sound of a castlevania, bloodborne crossover i'd recommend the game give it a shot!
This game has been on my to-play list for a long time now, I don't even remember how I first heard about it, but it's nice to see someone else mention it!
God the level of interactivity in Monomyth is incredible, its like a DND session where the DM lets you do what you want but you can actually visually play it. Fantastic
Don't mean to be a downer, however I wouldn't recommend Moonscars to anyone. It's full of game breaking bugs, constant crashes, and has the most inconsistent difficulty spikes to point where normal enemies are stronger than bosses.
Yep, If you pause the video where he says its inspired by Kingsfield, the thing also lists Arx Fatalis as an inspiration. The health and mana bars are straight up copies from Arx Fatalis. Then theres also a whole bunch of little things, like a bone being your first weapon, keys hidden under pillows, the crafting, etc.
As a massive King's Field fan I have been eagerly awaiting Monomyth for so long now, I check the steam page often. Seeing it here and seeing you enjoy it so much makes me happy, like an early Christmas present. I truly hope it succeeds, the world needs more King's Field! (And the Arx Fatalis influence adds so much!)
Absolutely unreal to see Hammerfight mentioned! One of my secret all-time favorite games that I periodically come back to because it's so unique and satisfying, yet I've never heard anyone else talk about it. I'm not even sure how I first found it.
I love watching you realize that an immersive sim, known for the freedom and options it allows the player within the game, is giving you chances to play your way... exactly as an immersive sim is intended to be played... very excited for Monomyth
@@darksteellotus3694 there is a fan patch that fix arx fatalis and made it playable on modern PC called Arx Libertaris. it doesn't only fix the bug but also modify the spell system to be more consistent and easier to draw runes. it's kinda unacceptable for them to sell arx fatalis on steam without including the patch (but the patch is also a stand-alone .exe i think, so it's complicated ) but the steam version is unplayable.
don’t know if this he’s already tried this one, but “Tunic” is an absolute gem with punishing combat, a cryptic lore, dodge rolls and stamina-based combat. he should definitely try that one out
These videos are always great in part because pine has such a kind-hearted outlook and is always willing to see the good in something. When something really janky happens, you can hear him hesitate and wait to talk bad about it until he sees more, and he always has something constructive to say even when he didn't have a good time. It's very encouraging to people who go out on a limb and create stuff like this
New Eden, the MMO from the last video, has seen a massive surge of new players in the last week or so. They even added a vanity item in honor of Iron Pineapple. It's a cloak with a little Iron Pineapple with sunglasses on it 😂. There's a holiday event going on right now, and a new update coming in a few days. IP, you should definitely do more videos on it, it's insanely fun and they've got some awesome things planned 😁. Not on the team or anything, just someone who really likes the game.
Will just say it's a TERRIBLE time to join in as a new player. The holiday event added christmas elf enemies to the entire zone, which are meant to be grinded for holiday items. Which is neat, gives existing players something to do. But...they're 100x stronger than any other enemy in the zone and will just fucking destroy a newbie. They slow down your movement and do like half of your HP in a single hit. Completely ruins progression and development for a new player Dumb game design, almost as if they didn't expect new people to join.
@@coolblast3 bruh, you're playing a souls like. If you think it's gonna be a breeze, you've got another thing coming. Yeah, the elves are annoying, but they're easily avoidable, and you learn that very quickly. They kick my ass and I'm max level and have some of the best weapons in the game. I learned to avoid them unless I really want to grind for ornaments. If anything, this is the best time to play because it's gonna teach you that it's not gonna be an easy game and you're gonna have to learn to avoid certain things until you're better prepared. They're only gonna be present for another week or so anyway, nowhere near an issue that should keep you from playing
I love how open-minded and kind you are, your reviews are honest and thoughtful. This series is so much fun and I wish you the best of luck for all your future endeavors :)
Haven't even watched the video (already did). Just came here to say that no matter how many of these videos you will make, they are ALWAYS entertaining to watch. Never stop with this series and Happy Holidays!
honestly, this is probably one of my favorite series on youtube. i always watch these as soon as they show up, no matter what i might have ben planning on doing. they're just a lot of fun, and you do a very good and fair job of presenting the games. keep it up as long as you enjoy doing these, we'll keep watching.
So I'd like to say that Enter the Gungeon definitely has a mechanic similar to that one in Fabular but it's mostly hidden. The more stuff you unlock and the more runs you do in EtG, the more difficult earlier levels will become. New rooms start generating and enemies that previously showed up later start showing up in earlier chambers. It's so subtle though. You'd never know it without restarting your save file. And while it makes the first few levels that much more difficult, your skill will generally increase a lot faster than the difficulty does. so, I think that "punishment" mechanic can work if done correctly enough. And the fact that EtG doesn't out right tell you it's happening also helps.
Another mildly popular roguelite that does this is a little indie game called The Binding of Isaac (lmao). But in that game it happens very very early on, and it also doesn't control like soap, so that's probably where Iron has a problem with it.
@@Kakodoyo111 the Everything Is Terrible achievement also only unlocks once you beaten Mom's Heart 5 times. A mechanic like this where the game "grows with you" can be good if it's well implemented. It keeps the game at a comfy level of challenge and adds variety to the game for subsequent runs. Basically, before Everything Is Terrible unlocks, the game is holding back most of the tricks it has available to add challenge and variety to a run. You're getting a fraction of the room, boss, and enemy pool to ease you into the game until you've proved you can handle it by finishing a run 5 times. In the case of Fabular, it sounds like the game is a little too eager to flip this switch and say "you're ready for the REAL game now!"
Slay the Spire, has a similar mechanic based upon how many times you beat a boss on a character. You get like a new ascension level for that character which makes the game progressively harder. Enemies get stronger, encounters are less favorable and map layouts are more punishing. I feel like the game getting harder works best when you have reached milestones in the game. Right now, Fabular increases difficulty based upon how quickly you can clear an area. Which on paper sounds like a great way of doing it, but in execution is very frustrating. They should change it to be either more like Isaac and have it be based on how often the player beats a "wall" type boss. or be like slay the spire and make difficulty increases upon beating the game.
I love that you were not nearly as harsh as you could have been when a game was janky but you could tell the developer was making it from a place of passion, as not to discourage them from potentially making really cool things in the future as they continue and improve/grow. I already subscribed but would have subscribed again for that. Very tactful
I always wished they'd make an Arx Fatalis remake. The bread making thing and other interactions blew my young mind to pieces back in the day. Not to mention the spellcasting by drawing glyphs with the mouse. That game is one of a kind, only marred by confusing and labyrinthine level design and clunky combat (though that was part of its charm).
Monomyth looks awesome. It's kind of tugging on some of the nostalgia I feel for Oblivion, while putting its own spin on it and really pushing the "immersive" part of "immersive sim".
man the devs put an insane amount of thought and love into monomyth its not even my kind of game but i kinda wanna explore and experiance it myself, and i just plain feel that such passion and work deserves attention. yeah, why not, im going a little outside my normal type of game and putting this on the list. these devs need support i think theyre are gonna make epic games this one included!
Wasn't expecting another of these so soon. Glad there's some real gems out there that you can bring to light. Can't believe we've had 18 of these already, but your passion for this stuff really shines through your videos.
These little Pruld-esque intros you're making are just adorable and I love them. Thank you for this wonderful series you've made. I really wish we could've got a full version of Monomyth. Honestly, it didn't remind as much of Dark Souls as it did of Morrowind and Oblivion, but with checkpoints instead of saving. And even though they seem unrelated, the Elder Scrolls dungeons, even and especially some of Skyrim's, really have that "interconnected area that you can explore a little deeper for more details" feel that a lot of the most developed "level" areas in the Souls series have.
A game I think may be worth looking into is ANNO: Mutationem. It’s more like a sci-fi story game but it has a dodge roll and melee combat so that counts as a soulslike… right?
yeah I got ANNO a while back. It's really interesting and has a lot of good things going for it. It's really nice visually, the story starts off pretty strong, and the gameplay is a really interesting blend of 2D platforming and a 3D rpg. That said, it's pretty rough around the edges in most places. The combat is fun but feels clunky, and it's pretty basic once you get the hang of it. Also, the story becomes pretty bad later on (in my opinion of course). I liked it enough to 100% it and eventually do a NG+, but it's definitely not for everyone, and I can't really recommend it unless it's on sale or something.
Hey, Hello from France. i've discovered your videos 5 or 6 years ago with your PvP content, great times. I love this series from the begining and hope it continue for long 😁 You should check "Lunacid" for your next video, a very good "King's Field" like imo Anyway, can't wait for the next episode and thanks for your videos
In Samsara (and based only on this video), my guess is that the "Man with Animal Skin" represents a rebirth as an animal. They have a simple intelligence and only know how to close and attack.
Monomyth looks a lot like Dark messiah of might and magic, where you could pick things and throw them, and interact with the map (you could pick iron and melt it to forge a sword step by step)
I'm surprised to see so many people mentioning it. I almost never see anyone who has actually played it. It was so good back in the day. Playing through now highlights how obtuse some of the level design was compared to a lot of modern games, which is super common among Source Engine games, but still a gem nonetheless.
I'm always happy to see videos of this series. I'm sure I'm not the only one glad to see games I may not have even heard about until now. Monomyth looks so good. And, I may have to try Hammerfight. Also, I love listening to you share the little details of the metal poster. I can see you two put a lot of work on the design.
Also it's worth noting that the Monomyth demo in the video is a pre-alpha, the dev's been adding a lot of stuff since then like armor, better UI, better enemy AI, a weapon durability/repair system, friendly NPCs, fire propagation, and so on. You can see some of these in videos on his TH-cam channel: www.youtube.com/@rattowergames/videos
wait moonscars art was made by one person? holy shit the first thing I thought was just how amazing the art style was and thought it must have gotten a lot of love from the team, but one person??? that person is insanely talented!
i got this recommended to me recently and i'm in love, i'm currently binging all the other videos in the series, it's not only very entertaining but has also helped me discover some interesting game suggestions
If Monomyth can keep up that level of quality, and keep adding ideas without bogging down the experience, it has the potential to be an instant classic. I just hope they keep the scope narrow and don't add too much bloat for the sake of playtime.
I love Pine and Vaati's friendship. Any time they're in a video together I laugh the whole way through. I also love Pine's appreciation of the little things in games (You can sit in the chair! That's so fun!).
this series is a joy every time and made me discover at least one game i thoroughly enjoyed, namely northern journey. Please never stop steam diving for us and unearthing these things!
A game where you respawn on a different level of Samsara would be kinda neat. So every time you die based on your actions you would reincarnate as a god, demigod, human, animal, hungry ghost, demon or damned. Shame the game didn't explore that.
I was listening to random songs on my music bot, when I heard a familiar tune. I couldn't remember from where, as the song sounded familiar, but I never heard of it. Then, as the intro part of the video played, it hit me. And for anyone wondering: Rhythm Thief OST DISC1: 01 Phantom R's Theme
If you're doing Monomyth maybe you could look at Elderborn, if it wasn't covered before (It's episode 18, I'm starting to forget...). It's not the most complex or deep game on the planet but the 1st-person melee combat is pretty awesome and a bit soulsy. A decent game for any Conan fans.
You playing, exploring and logically testing Monomyth was really a 2-for-1 respect for both you and the game. Your pattern-recognition skills are clearly quite high, brother. Well done.
The last game is so cool. It's like those old but polished game which provides you with so many options to do what you want. The environmental interaction is amazing.
Also it's worth noting that the Monomyth demo was pre-alpha, the dev's been adding a lot of stuff since then like armor, better UI, better enemy AI, a weapon durability/repair system, friendly NPCs, fire propagation, and so on. Have you played Ghost Song? It's a metroidvania with Dark Souls mechanics (bonfire thing, currency you lose when you die, stamina & dodging). It's absolutely gorgeous, I have been following it for many years now and am so happy he finally released it! The music in particular fits the gloomy sci-fi vibe sooo perfectly. 💜
Just to compare 2 games, Fabular's difficulty increases is something The Binding of Isaac does much better, as Isaac's difficulty increases only happen after beating Mom a number of times (what the game shows as the final boss to first time players) and the difficulty increases are in the form of deeper floors opening up and harder variations of earlier floors appearing. It never feels like you're being punished in Isaac for playing well.
I hope this series never ends
me too!
I’d like him to go back and review some he said he’d keep an eye on to see if they ended up as good as he was hoping.
Only we can keep it going. Learn unity and get making souls-likes

If you liked Monomyth, check out Lunacid! Extremely good atmospheric King's Field-like, though it focuses more on exploration and immersion than Monomyth.
Lunacid rules. really hope they replace all the anime shit tho. it clashes soo hard.
Second this, I've recommended it before but Lunacid is amazing fun

Also this was a pre-alpha Kickstarter demo, so the full game will be even better.
@@aryantzh2028 It would be illegal if he did not say it was a sponsorship. He'd get fined, and YT might kick him off
@@aryantzh2028 I mean he literally said the combat is pretty barebones, which yeah it looked like it, and he also implied he was disappointed there were no stealth mechanics when the enemy didn't react to the bottle he threw.

That use tk be in ark fatlis too
If Monomyth was made 20 years ago the developer would probably be a Triple A studio by now.

As a bitch for immersive sims, I think this is the first time I got genuinely pumped to play the full version of a game in this series. Come at me Monomyth, let's stack some boxes and break ourselves together.
(Also, the feather and jump mechanics really reminded me of breaking Morrowind)
Any idea if/when monomyth comes out?
Yeah, not many games had the feather falling and jump potion mechanic from morrowind...
I definitely got pre-skyrim Scrolls vibes from Monomyth too at certain sections
Dude Monomyth is looking super interesting! Everything from its font, to the art style, to the delightful jank makes that game look like it's the King's Field 5 that we never got.
@@myrech if there is only 1 single spin move in the game, u would expect it to be a reference to something too
@@myrech Wait, why are you questioning it if you've never played Nier yourself? How would you know if it was or wasn't? Why even bother questioning them then? Just seems weird.
I think you might be mistaken for another gane entirely, because 2B doesnt hold the sword and spin with it, but instead spins it with the NFCS around her effortlessly. As a result, she also doesn't buckle under its weight since she never actually holds the large sword in a horizontal spin move.
@@Davenzoid You may not have seen it because it needs the charge attack chip to be equipped but if you do the charge attack with a heavy sword she spins around at least 3 times and does this little animation at the end

Monomyth gives an Arx Fatalis vibe, love to see an old classic game mechanic, like the interactions with objects.
Absolutely unreal to see Hammerfight mentioned! One of my secret all-time favorite games that I periodically come back to because it's so unique and satisfying, yet I've never heard anyone else talk about it. I'm not even sure how I first found it.

It's very encouraging to people who go out on a limb and create stuff like this
That's exactly why I love this guy
The best feeling an immersive sim can give you is "I can't believe that actually worked!"
Completely ruins progression and development for a new player
Dumb game design, almost as if they didn't expect new people to join.
Just to expand on this, the newest patch that just released have made the elves much more balanced. Making it an even better time to join

Haven't even watched the video (already did). Just came here to say that no matter how many of these videos you will make, they are ALWAYS entertaining to watch. Never stop with this series and Happy Holidays!
monomyth looks amazing, the level of detail in everything is crazy
honestly, this is probably one of my favorite series on youtube. i always watch these as soon as they show up, no matter what i might have ben planning on doing. they're just a lot of fun, and you do a very good and fair job of presenting the games. keep it up as long as you enjoy doing these, we'll keep watching.
Please never stop this series, I LOVE IT. Doesn't even need to be Soulslike, you just trying out random stream games is so fun to watch.

Massive props for talking about Hammerfight.

yeah I got ANNO a while back.
