  • One of my favorite ways to work crochet into your knitting is with crocheted edgings. Here I show you how to work a simple picot edging.
Crochet instructions for the picot edging:
Single crochet into 2 stitches, chain 3 (or 5). Insert your hook into the left leg
of the first chain. Grab the yarn and pull up one loop. (Two loops on hook). Grab the
yarn again and pull through both loops on hook to close with a single crochet. Skip
next stitch, and repeat from beginning.
Knitting instructions for the long moss stitch:
CO an even number of stitches.
Row 1 (WS): *K1, P1*, repeat to end of row
Row 2: *P1, K1*, repeat to end of row
Row 3: *P1, K1*, repeat to end of row
Row 4: *K1, P1*, repeat to end of row
Row 5: *K1, P1*, repeat to end of row
Repeat Rows 2-4 to desired length. BO in pattern on RS of work.

Where have you been all my life? Lol. I’m turning 69 this November and I learned to knit, crochet and even sew clothes with the old Butterick patterns. Knitting is my thing. I love it the more difficult it is, cables, intarsia, etc. I knitted an afghan for my daughter-in-law and it needed something on the edge. I watched more videos and they just confused me. Even though I was taught how to crochet I was not proficient in it. And then I found your videos. You are clear, you made me understand what you were doing, not just copying you. You made my day. I was going to knit a picot edge but the thought of picking up the stitches on a 60”x70” afghan was just not what I wanted to do. Thank you so much !

As a lefty, I always need to take a minute to flip in my head what I see in crochet videos so they make sense! But your videos are easy to follow regardless of the direction!

I've watched a lot of teaching videos (mostly painting) and yours by far are the very best! Camera is focused clearing on demo, video very sharp. Wish you did more crochet! Thanks!

All of the information to everything you see in the video (including the scarves on me and the mannequin, and the yarns used) are in the video description field just below the video, including links. You may need to click on "show more" to see the whole thing. The yarn used for the scarf I'm wearing is Noro Silk Garden.

Perfect!👍 I knew how to create the picot but I couldn't quite remember exactly how to do the other part of the stitches to make a border with them. I want to border a granny square baby blanket for a little girl and thought this border would be perfect and dainty. Thanks so much for the refresher course! 🙂

Moss stitch is a thick, flat fabric that should work well for oven mitts, but you'll need to knit it with thick yarn in a tight gauge for the oven mitts to do their job of protecting your hands from high heat! I've found that felted oven mitts are better. You can find patterns (free ones, too) for these on the Ravelry website.

Thank you Staci, I love this. I'd knitted a lace shrug with 3/4 sleeves but wanted the sleeves to be just a teensy bit longer so I used the 5 chain version to create a picot edge round the cuffs making a very pretty finish and just a little extra length. Perfect! :-)

ahh thank you! I have never been one to crochet, but with a little change here and there this edging matches the lace I use earlier on the knit-work perfectly!

When crocheting borders it is standard practice to add a row/round of SC before starting the border pattern. The finished item will look neater if done this way.

I am considering adding this edging to a shawl/scarf but it will be along the 2 sides. Is the formula the same for figuring out the number of stitches to use? And do I pick up between the knots (beginnings/ends of rows) or do I pick up through the knots? Any help you can send me is greatly appreciated!

your usual clear, enjoyable instructions! How do measure the mm size of a crochet hook using a needle gauge? I have very old crochet hooks, most of which are unmarked. I love your scarf and would like to make it. I looked at the pattern, and I would like to make it a bit longer than 55 inches. Is that possible?

Great video very informational. And awesome instructions. However, you were talking so fast I had to keep rewinding it about 8 times. Anyways I loved your crochet edging. Thank you for sharing. You do very nice work. :)

Hi this is wonderful information to know I’ve crocheted a long time but now knitting my first knitting pieces beside a easy fold poncho that’s going to take ages finish 😐 is a asymmetrical shawl it’s garter with yo’s in it I picked a organic cotton yarn and used recommended needles us7 drape is super yo’s leave a quite a gap so I want to combine both skills anyway. So question is I want to do picot’s all around just small ones I think that would look would look nice don’t you? So put them in the bind off side first? How would I turn corner? In my crochet shawls I usually just put a sc ch1 around neck and entire shawl because most of my shawls are already decorative or sometimes I just a plain edge.
