Lesser shows would have ended the season on the episode 3 ending and filled the whole season out with filler.
Severance writers have it all figured out from the beginning so they can afford to have tightly written episodes with GREAT pacing!! Every episode we get questions answered, yet 5 more spring up in their place... I love this show

@ryancake42 this. Its why this and a show like Mr. Robot are spectacular. Mr. Robot is my holy grail series. Its perfect to me. Point is, Mr. Robot had an ending from the first episode. Sam knew what plot points he had to hit each season. Everything was planned out. Allowed them to take bing swings yet also know exactly where they were going. Same is to be said of Severance. As long as they are telling the truth when they say they know the ending. Know the plot points. Etc.
In conclusion. We are in the midst of our next great defining TV series.

I want to say that this was the first episode where it actually clicked for me that Hellyena was acting odd- she's usually very proactive, violent, and fearless (full of malice, you might say) but she basically stands in line behind Mark this whole episode and get creeped out by something as simple as crawling through a vent. Let's not forget this is supposedly the same Hellyena who tried to take the elevator up permanently with the help of a cable, it really didn't sit right with me.

Sure, she's a bit more timid but I question why she would risk Mark finding Ms. Casey. Also, why would Helena lean into the goat people so hard? Does she want innie Mark to find out company secrets? Does she really want him to set Ms. Casey free?

This new humility in her could also be the result of the shock to know that her outie is behind all this. And also her hesitation might be due to inner conflict because she loves Mark but he wants to find Gemma and she has to help him.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the possibility that innie Helly might have been woken up at some point between the speech at the gala and going back to the severed floor, so that this might be innie Helly but one that's had some kind of stern talking to or been threatened in some way. Now, Helly doesn't scare easily, and is super defiant, so the only reason I could think of that she would be acting differently than before is if she believes there's a threat to the other members of the team. I'm still leaning toward this being outie Helena, but I can think of reasons that this still might be innie Helly that's been intercepted and manipulated before going back to the floor.

Oh I am FULLY convinced it’s Helena down there! She even talks differently, and keeps wanting to point out how Lumon isn’t really listening or recording anymore (which Helly would NEVER believe). The only moment that made me second guess was in this episode when she held up the poster in the goat circle- that felt like a Helly move. But I think it’s just because she watched the videos of all her interactions and knows some of what she would do.
Also there was a moment in episode 1 when “Helly” gets upset and adamant about how Innies and Outties are different, which seems like a Helly move, but then I realized that Helena would feel the same outrage at being compared to her innie. It’s all sus.

What’s fascinating in this episode is how much it centers around those who were considered to be the most “evil” part of Luman - “guards” like Kobal, Millchak, Natalie -
And how, slowly, we can see for the first time they’re also “victims” of the manipulative system we always thought they were completely linked to.
The paintings scene is particularly disturbing: The only time we saw Millchack so unsettled was when Dylan “pirced his skin” in the crazy dance scene last season. I can’t wait to see more of his human side as the season progresses.

I think Irving and Burt were romantically involved on the outside, and when Burt opened the door, he saw a man he used to love. When Irving came to I imagine he wasn't exactly forthright in explaining how he actually ended up there. A revelation like this could explain why Burt appeared to be crying while watching Irv from his car. Maybe a part of him still misses his former partner, or perhaps he knows that Irving works a severed position at Lumon, and was able to surmise that his recent departure was somehow related to Irving's unexpected arrival. Even if it's just a gut feeling, the idea that their love could be strong enough to cross the boundary of these men's severed lives is quite touching.

While I was thinking about this episode, I had a realization about Irving.
Irving was waiting for his innie to use the OTC. He kept painting the same thing over and over so that would be the first thing his innie saw when waking up in the outside world. Mark's plan with the light made me realize this.

I don't think oIrv knew about the OTC. He did the paintings as a way to get the image through to iIrv through the subconscious. By repeatedly painting the same scene while loudly playing Ace of Spades every time, he's creating an intense multisensory memory. He was also staying up late with coffee so that iIrv would be exhausted, as it seems that sleep helps the subconscious bleedthrough in the form of dreams. This almost worked: in S1, iIrv dozes off and he sees a black oozing substance, which in retrospect we understand is black paint. It seems only a matter of time before iIrv would've seen the full image, but fortunately the OTC was able to accelerate the process.

I believe in the after episode TH-cam video she confirmed the tube was her mother's (not sure if she was supposed to be so up front) and a lot more will come out later in the season. I stumbled upon the video right after I finished the episode on Friday morning at 1am lol.
Irv doesn't trust Helena imo, he even says he's never been to o&d to her which was odd. I think it's def outtie because when they show them all go through the elevator she's the only one we don't hear a ding from which ib assume is when severance protocol kicks in.
I think they're all homeless in mammalian because they said Ms Casey said they enjoy stargazing and homeless people are often referred to as "stargazers" since they sleep outside. That's why all then maybe look scruffy. Maybe they made long term severance contacts since their work is needed more often than other positions.
You could tell Natalie was uncomfortable about receiving the gift in the past. It's gotta be a loyalty test of some sort, but its weird. Did you see the egen doll in Dylans house next to his couch when they cut to him? Why would the people have even dolls? Tbh, I would MUCH prefer that to the mark/helly/gemma love triange because a) I'm waaaayyyy too invested in Mark and Gemma (lol) and because IMO it actually makes for much better storytelling and exploring the dynamic of innie being real people that are different from their outies. It presents a case of the show's entire premise a lot better than the mark/helly vs mark/gemma love triangle did ESPECIALLY because Mark S and Helly's relationship did not feel nearly as deep or intense as Gemma and Mark's was. I mean the man immediately agreed to risk his life and get reintegrated just so he can see his wife 🥲, you can't beat that.

re: the whole helly/helena thing, i’m almost 100% convinced that helena has taken over.
it's a bit of a reach, but i do think there’s also potentially a clue/hint to this theory in the opening title sequence - specifically, the few instances we get of helly and gemma being visually compared/mirrored. in particular, the fleeting reflections of them running in mark’s flashlight beam, and the flickering images of them both being shut into the exports elevator.
now of course this could be just the surface-level connection the two of them have as mark’s respective love interests, but i think it could go deeper. if helena truly has taken over, she’s essentially “retired” helly - and we know that, to the innies, retirement is more or less equivalent to death. helly, like gemma, is gone, “dead,” her autonomy and personhood taken from her, and her body (just like gemma’s) remains to be puppeted around by lumon.

Mr. Robot is my holy grail tv series. At the end of the 4th and final season, it was perfect to me. Sam knew the ending from the beginning. Everything was planned and shows. I can ramble endlessly about Mr. Robot.
Point is, I have a feeling Severance could rival it by its end. As long as Severance doesn't crap the bed in the end. But they say they know the end. They have a plan. And that gives me so much hope.

Let's just hope that it doesn't get cancelled before they manage to wrap it up. I don't know what its viewing numbers are exactly, but season 1 was for sure pretty obscure and not many people seemed to have even heard of it. They are doing way more in a way of promotion this time around, but I still can't imagine its viewing numbers being super high. Hopefully it won't become too unprofitable for Apple to continue investing in.

Perhaps her daughter is even Miss Huang?

But I also think that literally no one else in Lumon management is aware, that Helena used her inside knowledge to not trigger her severance chip. That leaves the question of whether she's doing it simply to gain intel or because she sees that innie Helly is way more free than she is as a Lumon scion.

I think we are going to see Gretchen falling in love with Dylan's innie, and have something of an 'affair' with himself. From their scenes together during the meet, I get the sense that innie Dylan's optimism really rubbed off on her, and during the outie scene later that optimism in Dylan's demeanor was notably absent. She also does not give outie Dylan near as much affection as she did innie Dylan when she left.

I think the Helly/Helena question is so obvious and in your face as to be obvious to casuals not just theory enthusiasts and those down the rabbit hole, that it’s a cover to distract from something else. So she will be revealed to be Helena probably as a mild twist so we aren’t as focused on Dylan’s descent or that Irv is doing industrial espionage or is CIA or whatever, or possibly a left-field reveal that Burt is Irv’s dad, although that’s unlikely as Turturro’s age and Walken’s age are only something like 13 years apart.

And as much as I would like Helena to turn out to be a good guy whose been crushed by Lumon all her life, she's just got no personality.

I have a theory about the goat wranglers. I feel like the mamalians nurturables name refers to them in some way. All of them seem off and somewhat feral. I feel like their department is an experiment of introducing a severed person, who has no idea of what life or human etiquette is, into a herd of animals to nurture them as a more controllable human. That’s what first popped into my head during that scene. I wonder what their outies are like.

Possible connection to the multiple uses of the word "dam" and the goats - A dam goat is a female goat that is the parent of a goat, and is used to refer to the female goat in a goat's genetic lineage.
"Dam" may also refer to dam-raised kids, which are goat kids that are raised with their dams instead of being bottle-fed. Dam-raised kids are wary of unfamiliar people and animals, and depend on their dams and the herd for safety.

There’s no explanation for why she would be acting so different if that were Helly R, and I truly don’t think this show is interested in an unsatisfying dupe like that. Does anyone have a compelling case for why that would still be Innie Helly??

To quote myself from elsewhere in this thread: "One thing I haven't seen anyone mention is the possibility that innie Helly might have been woken up at some point between the speech at the gala and going back to the severed floor, so that this might be innie Helly but one that's had some kind of stern talking to or been threatened in some way. Now, Helly doesn't scare easily, and is super defiant, so the only reason I could think of that she would be acting differently than before is if she believes there's a threat to the other members of the team. I'm still leaning toward this being outie Helena, but I can think of reasons that this still might be innie Helly that's been intercepted and manipulated before going back to the floor."

Yes I caught that too…but subsequently Helena tells Cobelvig that “we’ll speak to them together,” when referring to the Board, so I’m not sure what to think!!!
Edit: read above comment, perhaps it is the correct grammatical reference, but I feel like I’ve never heard the Board referenced before like that, which could also be intentional.

Nauti, someone on the team said there was a clue in the stuff on Milchick's computer in this episode. But I can't seem to figure it out. Looks like he's turning survellience on and off for various employees. But the employee in question has a number we haven't seen before.

I felt it implied that if Cobel went onto the building she would have been killed. The chauffeur taking that step forward...

Forgive me for being a middle-aged white woman commenting on something I don't experience, but that scene with Milchick and Natalie played so perfectly to me. You saw all the pain, all the corporate horseshit and tone-deafness, all the understanding and misunderstanding in the faces of Milchick and Natalie. Some EXCELLENT face acting by both actors there. I mean, they made me understand what it feels like to be a person of colour in a corporate job where they just don't get you. It wasn't the big corp doing evil. It was the big corp trying to reward a valued employee, but failing miserably. I found it painful to watch but also so enlightening.

Check out Helena bowing to her ultra-dominant father after the security disaster. She then watches herself as Helly and sees her grab Mark and kiss him on the surveillance video. Helena smiles-her Innie is confident and strong-willed and has an inkling of desire for Mark. Then contrast that with the posture of the woman now pretending to be an Innie. It's Helena-not Helly-that's down there with Helly's three friends. Would Helly comfort Irv (who doesn't seem to buy her story from the surface)? That's a great actor and director pulling this subtle move off.

By the same token, would Helena jeopardize the completion of Cold Harbor? Because that's exactly what she's doing by helping Mark on his journey to find Ms. Casey. She's also encouraging him to set Ms. Casey free. Not to mention, she's exposing him to company secrets.

Anybody who hasn't seen the trailer leaks for each episode for the rest of the 2nd season..
It's so ridiculous how much anxiety I had watching it but still doesn't spoil much somehow
