This is a brilliantly nostalgic recording - maybe not the sharpest audio - but totally atmospheric. I had quite forgotten how good John Wilson was (and also Richard McCracken on bass) - and this is probably the best version of Sugar Mama I’ve heard to date. But Blister on the Moon remains one of my favourite tracks of all time….. so raw, but so much energy. Rory at his very best !!!👌🏼
The month before this concert, I saw Taste open for Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood & Rick Gretch aka Blind Faith and Taste stole the show the crowd went wild and kept beggin for encores. Clapton tried to regain the momentum when BF played by putting his guitar behind his neck to play the lead for Presence of the Lord but Rory et al were still in everyone's minds.
That must have been a tough pill to swallow for Clapton to watch Taste take what Cream did and expand upon it, especially right in front of his face! That's what they call getting "dunked on" here, a basketball reference. The fact that Clapton had to resort to those type of theatrics is very telling, it must have shaken him up a bit. Rory was a force of nature, for me he's the best all around English guitarist of that era, bar none. I like Peter Green for pure blues, but Rory could do it all.
Everyone who knows of Rory Gallagher knows what a brilliant musician he was, but not enough praise have been given to all the players in Taste & the Rory Gallagher band, they were all top notch
@@drewhamillband Hi Drew I fully agre with you, Rory was a hard working man, Rory like Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy both men made the boysoin their bands far better players, been good just was not god enough, they had to be right at te top of their playing to be in those bands.
Saw Rory numerous times in Belfast. Last one was the Taste farewell concert in the Ulster Hall, Belfast. He always gave 100% and the Troubles never deterred him from playing any venues in Ireland. Gone but not forgotten
@@theguvnor5964 a travesty, mate. Simple op and they fuckt it all up and now he's gone. Saw him with Rory and later with MSG.. fabulous drummer.!!! 21 years of age, and already an unbreakable mould was set. Taste existed because super talented people stick together, their biofields are welded together as they play together. Superb footage and nicely shot on 16mm/brilliantly edited.
I would imagine that Blossom Toe’s drummer regretted lending his kit to John Wilson after seeing the way he battered the hell out of it - JW’s a great player!

A bit of trivia for Rory Gallagher fans- before Taste was formed, Rory played in a almost uniquely Irish phenomenon- a Showband! I think it was The Fontana Showband!! Never saw them (hated showbands!), but had the great good fortune to see several incarnations of Mr.Gallagher`s genius!!! Happy days!
right on man; rory never sought fame, he truly was the last of the independents, was lucky to see him 1st at the isle of wight, if i remember right he played on friday, anyway, after seeing him they could've played abba or the tremeloes for the rest of the concert, wouldnt have made a freakin difference to me; rory needs no R&R HoF, he's in our hearts
Brilliant live. Had the great fortune to see him on several occasions including the live recording at The marquee. Hard to believe he was an early influence on Adam Ant.
He was a huge influence on Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest also, mate! Glenn said in interview, he used to go as often as possible to watch Rory up close and he started using the treble booster in the pre Priest days as a result..
@ sternumagnum.......I still adore the Taste albums, so innovative. First time I'd heard Rory and that was it. Well over 40 years now (for me) of loving everything he did. I mentioned that particular album as I have never seen it anywhere else, cool to hear you have it. And to think Rory was 18 when they formed in '66, a truly phenomenal artist. Cheers from Australia.
I hate these “I saw blah blah blah” comments, but I saw Taste in 69 at the Marquee and loved ‘em. They were stupendous. That first album was in every guitar player’s house back then, along with Freddie King, and Cream’s debut.
Rory Gallagher sadly never got the attention he really deserved. He is one of my favorite top 3 guitarist of all time. I think its funny his Strat actually had more paint on it in this video. Goes to show you how old this fucking video is. Amazing. God I wish I could have met him.
Okay this is old out of date video, but that aside, it really cooks ! Guitar drums bass trio OUTSTANDING ! Always, huge with his fans, Rory was a much bigger star and master that he is given credit for in the history of music.
Taste - August 22, 1969. Line-up: Rory Gallagher (gtr+voc), Richard "Charlie" McCracken (bass) and John Wilson (dr). Bilzen Jazz Festival, Belgium💕 Set list: 01- Blister On The Moon 02-Sugar Mama
Brilliant, thanks for sharing this. I saw Taste play at the Cream farewell gig in November 68,my first ever concert, tbh,I was too hyped up about seeing the Cream to be bothered about Taste but I now wish I'd given them more attention,Rory is up there with the best of em.
you can see the famous Range Master Treble Booster sitting on top of the vox ac30! I've always read that everybody used those, but this is the first time I ever remember seeing one. a darn shame the guitar isn't mixed a bit louder, but what I can hear sounds good. I wonder if the big Italian amps were on?
I am guessing those amps were for another act. I was thinking the same thing about the rangemaster. I didn't know they were so big. It was said he later put it inside the amp
+paul levine Rubbish! Get your dates right. They were inspired by Cream when they started. Their version of Spoonful 'Live' from '67 is lifted from The Cream version...wholesale!
+Andy Thomas Not a troll. But someone who saw Taste more times than I care to remember between 1968-69. What I don't need is a history lesson from you OK?
paul levine he's actually right. Mostly ever rock n' roll blues band where inspired by Cream. When they formed Hendrix wanted to play with them, Grand Funk Railroad's first album cover looks exactly like Creams and even did a song that cream covered in said album and Bonham said that "there are only two rock drummers today, me and Ginger Baker". Taste, Experience, Zeppelin and Sabbath were the heaviest, but Cream was the most precise and gifted.
Every time i saw Rory he had a '63 Fender Concert or some other fender combo..Believe he liked crankin' the heck out of a smaller wattage amp!! I do too!
Right on, saw Rory play the same sequence in Darmstadt, Germany, in early 1970. Rory regularly used to sweep the floor with the bands he opened up for, be it deep purple. zz top, aerosmith. blind faith, Fleetwood mac, what-and whoever, he was so much more than just a guitar player-he was the GOD-that's straight from the perforated brain of an atheist. Rory is THE DRUG. Can't even listen to anyone else.

There's an even better performance of this song -hard to believe, I know- from live at the Marquee, 1968. The only upload on TH-cam (the thumbnail shows a shamrock on a black background) has the whole hour-long gig, but a commenter has 'Blister on the Moon' and several others timestamped.
At 14 I bought the first Taste album right after it came along with the first Cactus album. Funny thing is I only bought them because I thought the covers looked cool. lol. What a day that was!
I went to the College of Woster in Wooster, OH. That'w where I heard of Rory. I guess it was close enough to Cleveland. Rory never played there, but Brian Auger did - another Cleveland favorite. As Chrisse Hynde said, in another context - "Way to go O-Hi-O!"
Do you have any sources?. I have been trying to find it, but the only source I found was an interview, and Jimmy's answer was: "...I'm the best guitar player on this chair"

The King of cutting edge blues/rock guitar! Rory Gallagher Rocks some blues!!!
