glad you talked about both the advantages of having a cohesive style and the risk of getting repetitive with it. i'd love to see more about how to be cohesive without getting into a rut of the same pieces in the same formulas.
it's tough working from home though to motivate myself to put together a cool interesting outfit instead of throwing on a basic tshirt and yoga pants. i wish i accessorized more but it's just like... i'm the only person who cares, and do i care enough to put the effort in

What I've learned is that the absolute #1 best way to be cohesive is a color palette! Change silhouettes/patterns, keep colors or mindfully integrate new colors. Say you love plaid pants and tees but get bored of it. If you try a floral skirt in the same color palette as ur plaid pants, it can be worn with all the same tees but is a completely new look :)

I have a really bad habit of buying things that aren't cohesive and then wondering why they don't go with anything else in my closet. I also tend to buy things that are out of my comfort zone because they look cute on other people so I want them to look cute on me. I have never liked the way collared shirts look on me, but a few years ago I decided I was GOING TO WEAR COLLARED SHIRTS, DAMMIT! So instead of buying one or two to try them out, I bought like 10. Then I never ended up wearing them because guess what? I still hated the way they looked on me.

What has helped me keep a cohesive style that I never get sick of most has been taking inspiration from my favorite pieces of older media. My biggest inspirations are The Labyrinth, The Phantom of the Opera, The Dark Crystal, Heathers, Girl Interrupted, and honestly even more I can't think of.

I think my biggest problem is that I like too many different styles that I don't want to commit to one... I would love to have a cohesive style, but even seasons will change the style that I want to wear. I think something that has helped me a lot recently though is pinning outfits on Pinterest specifically with pieces I know I own or know I own something similar. Makes me excited to dig into my own wardrobe rather than always buying new things :)

Honestly I really like over-accessorizing. Especially when the accessories are exactly the same color. That’s why I got shoes and belts and bags in every rainbow color. When I wear the matching accessories it makes me look so put together and I love it!

Great thoughts! Thanks for sharing 😊 For me the hardest is wearing something that’s more elegant and elevated from casual or basics. My struggle is buying similar things to keep a cohesive style and then realizing I have multiples of everything because my cohesive style is very narrow. I'm getting better at not buying the silhouettes that I don't like on me, even though they look good on other people.

something (like the uncomfortable clothing part) that also helped me with my style and sewing is how I view my inspirations. I used to feel like i need to have an almost exact replica of outfits I found cool, but they never fit me in a way I liked about myself. I then, as an example, started realising that I actually dont like pencil skirts or stiff skirts because I like having the room of moving around.

A big enemy for me is thrifting things not suitable for my country's climate. I like sweaters and cardigans and long sleeves, but I live in a country that's humid. So I never really get to wear the items I want because it would be too hot. But my BIGGEST enemy is still buying items that align with my style but not the weather because I make excuses about wearing them when it gets cold. But it NEVER gets cold here so I NEVER get to wear them.
They are collecting dust in my closet as we speak.

    • @Tissuepeppaaa
      @Tissuepeppaaa หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I love wearing cardigans and long sleeves too, in fact it’s my favorite style of tops to wear. I do get all four seasons where I live, but even during summer I still want to wear my cardigans. So I wear sheer, lace and light weight crochet cardigans on hot summer days. I love wearing them over tank tops. I would like to suggest you give it a try

    • @kat5000
      @kat5000 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes, I second the lace/crochet cardigan idea!
Another thing: functional clothing. There are long sleeve, loose tops from UV protectant and cooling materials, especially in Japanese brands I think. Not natural fibers, certainly not cheap, and not the cosy knit aesthetic sweater that I love, but mostly interchangeable with sweaters in an outfit.

it's definitely a tricky balance between owning similar pieces to establish your own style but also have it not feel so repetitive. perhaps it's about what you pair those pieces with and trying out new combinations so that your style stays 'cohesive' but you can achieve variety at the same time. as for me, i love experimenting with my style from time to time but my issue is i don't have the guts to wear it outside my home. i end up reverting back to 'safe' outfits that won't draw attention but someday i would like to proudly wear whatever i want and not mind people looking when i'm out and about.

Over-accessorizing has been a game-changer for me actually! We say ''less is more,'' but the inverse is true too, ''more is less!'' So whenever I find myself second-guessing if a more formal piece of jewelry is ''too fancy'' and out of place to wear with my track pants and sneakers, I can just layer on even MORE jewelry with it to make the fancy one seem LESS formal.

  • @overthinkingkpop

I started watching your channel some time back (at the same time as Katie from Steal the Spotlight - algorithm) and you are the reason why I started to look at clothes as something more than just piece of fabric :D I was classic case of wearing minimalist/timeless/popular pieces and wearing them to the ground. Somehow without real soul in it, just affordable presentable outfits (most of the time inherited from my siblings or parents). After watching some of the videos, I was more intentional and I am still looking for my personal style, but it is so much fun :D
well, not the shopaholic phase of buying anything, but that is behind me. hopefully. :D

Should yalls buy cowboy boots, start with brown or black without a ton of extra color. Then you can go crazy when you've decided if you like cowboy boots.
I find I can't go wrong with a T-shirt or tank, jeans, and cowboy boots with a matching belt/bag. Then a flannel shirt or hoodie on top if I need an extra layer. For more fun pieces I've got some fringe vests, some cute sweaters, a black denim jacket wtih green and pink stitching (my fav statement piece) and an awesome red leather jacket.

I’m sure there are many reasons why I’m not completely happy with my wardrobe, but today I cut one of my tshirts to have an off-the-shoulder(boatneck-ish?) type of cut, and I LOVE IT. As a skinny, tall girl with relatively wide shoulders, and relatively narrow hips, it drapes wayyy better now. T-shirt have always looked kinda awkward on me (no matter the size,) but now my tshirts are not only flattering, but have a bit more character to them!

I have learned, though I'm certainly not perfect, that when I'm shopping, instead of aiming to buy the latest trends, I buy what I'm "missing," using trends as a guide, in my wardrobe, that adds to its cohesiveness. So, I aim to make the most out of what I have, by buying supportive pieces that help with what I already have. It took me a long time to get to this point as I had to go through tons of trial and error trying to build a base wardrobe I could be happy with. It takes time to figure out your style(s). So, it all depends what stage we are at in our journey to being happy with what we have.

it’s interesting that you mentioned loving a piece of clothing, but it being impractical in reality. i recently got an 80s romper from depop,i absolutely LOVED everything about it when i tried it on, and it seemed like it would be super practical. i wore it today, and omg it was riding up my crack constantly! i couldn’t bend over at all without feeling exposed and was so self conscious the whole time i was wearing it. i thought it wouldn’t have that issue since the shorts were longer :/ i actually ordered like 3 other rompers because i liked that one sm when i tried it on. i’m really regretting that choice now 😅 i will definitely be wearing bike shorts underneath them in the future

Was going to suggest sturdier undies, like granny panties or even those new women's boxer shorts... Bike shorts also sound nice tho.
Snag tights make biker style light shorts (called chub rubs iirc) in a plethora of colours, so if colour is something you like to play with, have a look, or cut off old tights that have runs further down on the leg to try it out first?

I feel like the new thing for people to worry about is that their style might be repetitive, when a short while ago we were supposed to have a "uniform" you could fall back on, which was, of course, repetitive and you didn't have to think about it. Maybe it has to be one or the other or we could go for things that have sort of a similar essence but aren't exactly the same. But it's a fine line and that's okay.

You should obviously do what makes you happy with your channel, Alexa, so take this or leave this:
I haven’t felt as drawn to some of your videos lately because I wish you would rewear your clothes more. If you aren’t rewearing the outfits you style, then I feel like maybe the experimentation would t work for me, either. I, for one, would love it if you rewear clothes in more videos. Actually, if you make a video about wearing outfits you came up with in past videos and still stand by, I would probably watch and rewatch that so much! But, first and foremost, I’m just one person, and you know your channel best, so you should trust your judgment and go to people wiser than me for counsel. I did like this video a lot!

Great points here! Always seem to struggle with this off and on. Love your advice and will think about this when approaching my wardrobe!
One problem I find is with colors. I often find that I need every color of shoe/bag to make an outfit go together? Like if they don’t match I think the outfit looks weird, but sometimes if they do I find that it’s boring! I guess maybe it would be good to branch out in terms of texture or shade? But haven’t found a solution to this. I guess along those same lines, sometimes the color of an item can stump me: like I love the fit or the pattern, but I just can’t find anything to go with it or only ONE item. I find that wearing too many neutrals might be boring? But then I don’t enjoy color 😂
Definitely also struggle with under accessorizing as well. I also need to wear glasses and I often feel like sometimes my outfits look really good, but that they don’t work with my glasses 😂. Obviously sight is more important but that always seems to get me stuck, since contacts irritate my eyes too much.
OH and I definitely also get very focused on only one aesthetic

As a fellow stylist and fashion enthusiast, one of the things that has helped me a ton these past few months is planning my weekly outfits.
I pencil out ideas I had, items I want to wear, especially things I haven’t in a while, and I plan 7 outfits. It’s flexible so I can swap looks or items if the weather, an event or plan comes up that requires changes to the look I planned for the day.
It has helped me so much figuring out what I actually wear, what I keep coming back to, what I forgot I had but love or hate wearing.

I actually adore all my clothes. I'm putting a ban on buying any new clothes for a while because I love what's in my wardrobe so much and if I have more things I'll be less likely to wear my cherished pieces. Yet I still always feel like I have bad style. The biggest thing is just laziness and choosing personal comfort. Instead of wearing a beautiful, ornate, embroidered velvet jacket and a maxi skirt I'd rather wear sweatpants 🙃 My list of excuses are endless. I'm a single Mother. I'm chronically ill. But the bottom line is it's kind of selfish to hoard these thrifted gems if I never wear them. So I've started to wear what I love after a deep depression episode. Other more minor problems are under accessorising and not doing my hair. I bought a Shark airstyler and feel SO much better about myself. I actually want to put on my nice outfits when I have good hair because I feel worthy of them.

something I’ve realized I do is every single outfit I currently have or am planning for future in my mind is a different “vibe” that resonates w me- so each one feels unique to me even tho some use repeat pieces, formulas, etc. I am someone who like all colors and many accessories so that works out in my favour i guess and I don’t get bored
Also I have all my outfits saved as pictures organized by weather so I can re-wear them again and again I’m all for repeating! I’m not a “come up w something on the spot” person at all. Especially w all my clothing sensory issues I need to k n o w it works before I wear it or I’ll regret it lol.

Ngl, my personal style is bonkers: loud colors, weird cuts, unusual textures. I found the through-line that makes it look cohesive: sweater vests. Neon green, lace shirt and yellow clam diggers look like a "real" outfit if you throw a bright yellow sweater vest over it.

For me it's buying clothes that don't fit perfectly and trying to make them work, like keeping jeans that are a little too tight or a top where the sleeves are a little too long... I would put them on and try to make them work and get really frustrated in the end haha 😂

My husband teased me the other day about changing my clothes multiple times a day, because my daughters do it now too 😂, but I have a lot of great pieces and I want to get a lot of use out of them. Also, I just do what I want 😜

I made the mistake of gaining weight and then not taking care on picking my clothes because I thought it would be temporary. I bought the bare minimum basic stuff to cover myself. I should have put more love and care on the task because I deserve to look good at all times, even on my big tummy times.

So, what do you do if you don't have a style at all? I buy clothes, but it's usually just jeans and an band tee. I have no style other than that, and I don't want to always wear the same thing, but I have no idea what else to do?

I would maybe try to buy different cuts of jeans, or different silhouettes of tops to see if you connect with any of those. If you go too drastic with the pieces you won’t end up wearing them because they’re uncomfortable and don’t match anything, but if you find you like a specific silhouette, maybe you can buy more pieces that match into that. say you realize you love some bell cut sleeves because they make you feel like a fairy or a witch, try getting a skirt or some flared pants and matching it with that. and now that you have that skirt, suddenly this other top looks super cute and wouldn’t it just look lovely with this pair of leggings? i think that’s how style comes to be.
a different approach is to try buying more accessories other than just necklaces and rings. try different cardigans, layered turtlenecks, boleros, belts, scarves, etc. and see if anything speaks to you through (again) silhouette or color. that’s an easy way to spice up your already existing clothes while you search for your more authentic style

My trap is too low cut tops. I always like the style of them because I have a small upper body and bra size. It looks good in the mirror. But sometimes I feel to exposed wearing them. But I also don’t like the opposite where I’m wearing a high neck top. It’s hard to find the perfect balance of showing my chest in a flattering way that doesn’t feel like I’m too exposed.
If anyone can relate to my struggle and has top suggestions that are basics please help a girl out! 🙏🏻 😅😅
for reference, my favorite cut top so far is the free people top called “clean lines sunfade baby tee”,

Wear scoop neck tops or v necks, or just any neckline that shows your collarbones without showing your cleavage. I'm an XS 34A/32B bra size so I know lol.
