How are they cheating the workers? Without those factories there would be no work at all. The governments of many of these countries are totally corrupt and have not a clue as to actually run a country. If not for foreign investment they would be even worse off. The situation sucks, but as long as the government is incompetent I don't see any alternatives.

From my experience mingling with many factory workers, i was told that factories prefer to employ women more than men because they want to avoid riot, especially when the workers start to demand higher salary.

I have higher education than factory workers, I'm privileged and get paid high salary - but even I don't earn $10 a day. Mind you, I only work 8.5 hours (officially - in practice it is more like 10 hrs) and my job isn't nearly as tiring... I support the notion of $180 a month, though: prices are rising rapidly so $160 isn't that much any more. But $160 - $200 is about what Cambodian teachers working in private schools earn, depending on what grade they teach.
It's crazy they get paid so little when the goods they produce sell for so much in other countries. I know that the sneakers they make routinely sell for 100-200$ a pair, and the worker doesn't even get paid that much. That's insane.

This is an old vid, as of Jan 2018, but the issue is the same - industry will go wherever they can get the cheapest labor (and wherever they can get away with treating workers the way no unionised labor force would ever allow). Cambodia has one of the most corrupt governments anywhere in the world, and they know that if industry cant get away with such low wages in Cambodia, they will simply move production to Vietnam or Bangladesh or wherever they can get the job done cheaply and with minimal trouble from regulators. Those of us who dismiss conspiracy theorists need to look at how this continues to make the top 1% richer as the bottom 50% of the world slides further into the abyss.

And yet these women are the lucky ones. Many of the women especially from countryside do not have education and are barely literate: most of the time prostitution is the only option, if they cannot get work in a factory. Going back home is often not an option because of the humiliation and the demand to support their family. I'm watching this four years later and nothing has changed. More and more of people share their 3*3 m room, maybe working in different sifts and taking turns sleeping on the bed. Activists have been jailed, murdered and people's spirit crushed; workers are too scared to complain. And if you think those rooms are decent, well, I've slept in one several times, mice running over my body - cooking and washing up happens two steps away from a squat toilet. The room you see the injured man living is one of the better ones. But I've seen worse ones, like the enclosure 30 rooms with one shared toilet (with no door) and one big tub of water for cooking and washing for 6 months that gets stagnated. All washing is done on the courtyard, so you cannot take clothes off which is especially problematic for women's hygiene, especially for menstruating women. Drainage is often a problem especially during monsoon when the sewage can dome up into the flooded streets. Most small streets have no drainage at all, which adds to the risk of diseases. Unemployment is high, so boycotting Cambodian garment industry only hurts the poor workers if factories are closed.

I think a lot of the recent years poverty in Cambodia is caused by the Chinese having invaded Cambodia's economy under the corrupted approval of Hun Sen and let to run factories at no cost. All these cheap garments should not exist. The Chinese need be stopped and their number culled, like an invading swarm of invasive animals are culled. Cambodia used to be a French Colony and that time was a much better era for the country. There was no such abuses and the city of Phnom Penh was designed and build by the French. Cambodia should never have sought independence to become raided by the Chinese.

$3 for 10-16 hours per day, most of Cambodian people is like going to work in other neighboring country like Thailand, so they can learn at least 300 Thai Bart = $10 per day. No wonder about that right. It seem like the Cambodia government trying to force their citizen to get out from the country, and open the country for other foreigner to come. From some research and the reality when i go back to visit my country, about 50% of Cambodians are stay and work out from the country. I think the low wage in Cambodia is not only about the benefit but it is more and more than we can see and imagine...

Cambodia should never have sought independence from the French. During that golden era the French designed and built the city of Phnom Penh and there were no such abuse. Although people were poor, they could live happily without having to work 10 hours in a factory to be able to eat. It's crazy they get paid so little when the goods they produce sell for so much in other countries. I know that the sneakers they make routinely sell for 100-200$ a pair, and the worker doesn't even get paid that much. That's insane.

This is an old vid, as of Jan 2018, but the issue is the same - industry will go wherever they can get the cheapest labor (and wherever they can get away with treating workers the way no unionised labor force would ever allow). Cambodia has one of the most corrupt governments anywhere in the world, and they know that if industry cant get away with such low wages in Cambodia, they will simply move production to Vietnam or Bangladesh or wherever they can get the job done cheaply and with minimal trouble from regulators. Those of us who dismiss conspiracy theorists need to look at how this continues to make the top 1% richer as the bottom 50% of the world slides further into the abyss.

And yet these women are the lucky ones. Many of the women especially from countryside do not have education and are barely literate: most of the time prostitution is the only option, if they cannot get work in a factory. Going back home is often not an option because of the humiliation and the demand to support their family.
I'm watching this four years later and nothing has changed. More and more of people share their 3*3 m room, maybe working in different sifts and taking turns sleeping on the bed. Activists have been jailed, murdered and people's spirit crushed; workers are too scared to complain. And if you think those rooms are decent, well, I've slept in one several times, mice running over my body - cooking and washing up happens two steps away from a squat toilet. The room you see the injured man living is one of the better ones. But I've seen worse ones, like the enclosure 30 rooms with one shared toilet (with no door) and one big tub of water for cooking and washing for 6 months that gets stagnated. All washing is done on the courtyard, so you cannot take clothes off which is especially problematic for women's hygiene, especially for menstruating women.
Drainage is often a problem especially during monsoon when the sewage can dome up into the flooded streets. Most small streets have no drainage at all, which adds to the risk of diseases.
Unemployment is high, so boycotting Cambodian garment industry only hurts the poor workers if factories are closed.

I think a lot of the recent years poverty in Cambodia is caused by the Chinese having invaded Cambodia's economy under the corrupted approval of Hun Sen and let to run factories at no cost. All these cheap garments should not exist. The Chinese need be stopped and their number culled, like an invading swarm of invasive animals are culled.
Cambodia used to be a French Colony and that time was a much better era for the country. There was no such abuses and the city of Phnom Penh was designed and build by the French. Cambodia should never have sought independence to become raided by the Chinese.
Let's not get too complacent and hypocritical: it wasn't that long ago when 13 year olds toiled in the factories and fields of Europe doing 12 hour days. Not to say that it was or is OK.

Coconut water is expensive and goes off too quickly. Sugar water may sound better than tea but it also creates health risks equal to tea. Tea isn't that strong anyway, most people drink so weak tea that it has hardly any taste.

Check out near the end of the video, the girl was offered paid education and yet she chose to go work somewhere else. There's a reason why they live the way they do, and he is one of the few people who understands that.
Kim is extremely biased on the people he represents, rich factories. The girl didn't take the offer isn't her fault. Have you thought about other circumstances like elders or children she had to support? Her situation forces her too. For example, say you have a child that needs milk, food, clothing, medicine, care services and etc, but someone else offer you full benefit of a free education or training or even a new life which will make your life happy and memorable without spending a penny, would you say yes under the circumstance that nodding your head would mean the end of that child life because you would not earn a penny to support him/her? Your life would be magnificent, but would the child's too? I understand your point, but just sometimes, DON'T BLAME THE VICTIMS, but change the system. So...the presenter says that they are not showing the girls faces to protect their identity. But then shows where they are working. I think if someone from that factory was watching this it would be pretty easy to figure out who that was.
I hope Ken has received his karma. This documentary is now 5 years old and still reflects the incessant injustice to labourers. $3 for 10-16 hours per day, most of Cambodian people is like going to work in other neighboring country like Thailand, so they can learn at least 300 Thai Bart = $10 per day. No wonder about that right. It seem like the Cambodia government trying to force their citizen to get out from the country, and open the country for other foreigner to come. From some research and the reality when i go back to visit my country, about 50% of Cambodians are stay and work out from the country. I think the low wage in Cambodia is not only about the benefit but it is more and more than we can see and imagine...

Cambodia should never have sought independence from the French. During that golden era the French designed and built the city of Phnom Penh and there were no such abuse. Although people were poor, they could live happily without having to work 10 hours in a factory to be able to eat. The ruthless Chinese factories in Cambodia are the result of Hun Sen's government's corruption.
They are not forced to take such jobs, the fact so many do take up the jobs show that as bad as it is, it's still better than working for their own people.
