🇰🇭 Cambodia: Unlicensed to Heal | 101 East

  • He never finished medical school, but for the villagers of Rael in Cambodia's remote countryside, Chek Cheoum is a lifesaver.
    He only charges what his patients can afford, and is always nearby.
    With 0.2 doctors for every 1,000 people, Cambodia has one of the world's lowest ratios, forcing many to rely on unlicensed physicians like Cheoum.
    But when a village suffered a widespread HIV outbreak after contaminated needles were used on patients, the government banned all unlicensed medics.
    101 East uncovers Cambodia's failed healthcare system and its reliance on doctors with no licence to heal.

    Perhaps the government should work with unlicensed doctors to license them, test their knowledge.

  • @discreetninja9056

    Here's an idea for the Cambodian government: Give the currently unlicensed doctors proper screening and then give medical licenses for free instead of charging those who are qualified to be licensed. Doesn't this work to both increase the amount of doctor per people, and cut down on illegal and unsafe operations and treatments?

    • @MinotaurvsCyclops

      Yeah that's literally what I was thinking the whole time, shame the government refuse to do this.

      not sure if you've been to Cambodia but their government is absolute rubbish. nothing works in Cambodia. government positions are filled with crooks and morons. the well connected are swimming in cash galavanting amongst themselves in luxury and beautiful women while the poor are left to live next to dumpsters and begging money from tourists and without food to eat. foreign NGOs should cut aids totally and allow the country to fail. when the country fails, the working class will revolt and overthrow the government. why should anyone care when their own government don't even care a single bit about their own people. I've managed to mingle with some of the richer and privileged Cambodians in Phnom Penh and you wonder where they get the money from by just being air heads.

    Cambodia is a beautiful country with many wonderful people, I have very happy memories.The people will tell you in hushed tones how the government does not really look after Cambodians, all the logging that is now causing homes to flood, all the deals that its two neighbouring countries strip of its natural resources, the poverty and lack of public services is appalling, especially healthcare. Everything costs and the majority of people are poor, no refrigeration,( upside is deliciously fresh foods), poor road networks, great corruption and takeovers by its neighbours and China. The French live good lives with restaurant and other businesses pandering to tourism. There are great injustices continuing here, just as there were during the Vietnam war, US B 52s dropped over half a million tons of bombs on a country with which the US was not at war... there are many stories and people and animals continue to be blown up by the landmines left unmarked by all those ravaging the country. I really feel for Cambodians. These unlicensed health practitioners are just that, unlicensed yet they do as good a job as government workers and are far more accessible and trusted by locals. They need help and intervention.

    A license does not guarantee competency.. These unlicensed practitioners have a medical background, the government should focus on training them as much as possible. They seem to be the only option in these rural areas Cambodia..Don't prosecute them for trying to help.

      @Ngim905 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ronald wagner I support your idea. The Cambodian government has many thing you get difficult to understand about. Sometimes the government keeps ignoring the situations until it get worst and irreversible. When they start taking action they do it in extreme, like this case.

    The rural people are going to still see these unqualified docs. The government should train these unlicensed people. So thag they can at least provide light care with proper knowledge in a proper environment. The more serious cases like surgical cases will go to the hospitals.

    HIV meds actually only cost pennies a day. The pharmaceutical companies charge Americans (or their insurance company or Medicare) thousands of dollars/month. Yes, they do give a lot of HIV medicines to Africa. But, it gets there & sits in unrefrigerated containers for months or years. If it's used at all, it no longer helps or can actually harm those that take it. Why can't we help a single small village?

    • @siblinganon66
      @siblinganon66 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it depends on the medicine if it needs to be refrigerated at all. and perfectly fine drug can also hurt if taken incorrectly. the costs for hiv meds aren't production costs alone but also the research needed to develop them in the first place and to develop the next generation for when the virus will mutate. it's not that easy to stay ahead of a virus mutation rate.
      as for the single small village... it's not single. try to imagine how many of these villages are there in the world. that is the problem, not the single village.

    • @nodak0164
      @nodak0164 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sibling Anon You're absolutely right on all counts. But it still hurts to see small kids be so sick. There are so many government programs & NGO's that try to help. It's just frustrating to see how much gets wasted, stolen, or re-sold by people who have no right to do so. And I'm sure you can agree with that.

Especially, Side effects or drugs mechanisms. They just know how to treat the symptoms and which medicine to use. Untrained Health Care provider??

    Many things are the same in Thailand where I have lived for 20+ years. They always say "no money," as they light up another cigarette, down another beer, and ride away on their motorcycle. A big difference between the countries is that there are medical facilities all over Thailand which include hospitals, doctors, and government-sponsored medical centres.
    'nuf sed. One thing they have in common, which prevents progress in many areas of society is education. Both governments try to keep the uneducated under their thumb to prevent them from progressing in an upward mobile manner.
    'nuf sed.

    • @brexitbrit3894
      @brexitbrit3894 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      as somebody that has worked as a teacher in both countries, cambodian children are encouraged to ask questions , in Thailand it is forbidden. Thais are brainwashed from birth especially about the very corrupt royals yes including rama 9. Cambodia is still trying to recover from khmer rouge and pol pot, thailand could not survive something like that! its far poorer but now have free education and hopefully medical facilities will improve as you say they are terrible! They have government hospitals but are not good. Thailand has biggest wealth gap in world and richest monarchy go figure......

      ADV Taiwan You live in the developed country, you might sound this so weird and unacceptable. But if you try to understand about their lives, you probably understand. You know, those villagers are in the countryside, the undeveloped place in the country like the reporter said “ over look by the government”’. Most of the time people have no idea if which doctor is licensed or not since that doctor can treat them and get recovered. Another reason, there are shortage of doctors in the countryside. Plus with lack of money, no wonder they had no choice.

      English is not the official language of the country. In Germany Doctors speak German. In Italy Doctors speak Italian. In China doctors speak Mandarin or Cantonese. In Japan Japanese. Language does not always indicate educational level. Besides it is unlikely that the farmers in that area could communicate with an English doctor without a translater.
