  • Bruges cemetery, Centrale Begraafplaats Assebroek (Main cemetery at Assebroek
also known as the cemetery of the skull, one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've seen
This mysterious burial ground is not only the oldest in Belgium, it is also a wonderful place of silence within walking distance of the city centre. Prominent Bruges figures from the arts, literature, politics, or nobility have been given their final resting place here.
    Cemetery since 1787
At the end of the 18th century, Emperor Joseph II ordered an end to the centuries-old tradition of burying people around the churches. Graveyards had to be removed from the city, well outside the city walls, because hygiene and public health took priority. The Bruges City Council promptly bought a plot of land in Assebroek. The first burial took place in 1787 and from 1810 onwards, all inhabitants of Bruges were buried here.
    Contemplative atmosphere
Access the cemetery via the beautiful gatehouse. The peace and quiet, along with the overwhelming greenery, are bound to slow down your heartbeat. Just have a wander around. Notice the ancient beech trees, some of which are more than 200 years old. In the 19th century, an imposing grave monument was a status symbol for the well-heeled. Keeping up appearances for eternity. Many gravestones and tombstones are the product of the creative minds of high-profile sculptors. Enjoy the melancholic splendour that can be found in abundance.
    From 2 to 12 hectares
Compared to 1787, the cemetery is now much larger. At a certain point in time, plots were added for members of the clergy, such as Jesuits and beguinage nuns. The British, who were present in large numbers in the city in the 19th century, were also allocated a place here. A sizeable proportion of the cemetery has been occupied by war graves since the First World War. This is the final resting place of Belgian, British and German soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the war. The most recent expansion accommodates a columbarium with a scattering area and urn tombstones.
    Valuable heritage
A remarkable building near the entrance houses a small exhibition about the beautiful heritage, folklore, art and architecture. Admire the typical grave symbols. The hourglass is a symbol of the passing of time. Or the dove, the snakes, or the skull. Together, they tell a tale of hope, fear, or love.
    Living cemetery
These days, the Stedelijke Commissie voor Graftekens (Municipal Shrines Commission) advises the city on the management and restoration of the cemetery. Bruges has been a pioneer in the repurposing of graves, i.e. the reuse of old grave monuments since the 1980s. The graves are being cleared, but the city also encourages the preservation and restoration of historic and monumental tombs. This means that ancient tombs are retained

You may be in a cemetery and looking at photos of loved ones. Somehow it brings life to that person in the photo because you can think about them and imagine what their life was like. I find it comforting and very caring to those that have passed. A memory of them.

What a lovely, almost bucolic setting for a cemetery. I just loved this wee walk through history. It is astonishing that so many of these pieces of porcelain and photos are intact after two World Wars. As for the lady in her "eternal slumber photo", I have always been fascinated by them as my grandmother Pruitt's people were religious about postmortem photography. While I did find her collection macabre when I was a child, I sure wish I had them now. There were ambrotypes and tintype photos from the late 1840s, 1860s all the way up to her mother's funeral who died in my lifetime back in the 1980s. I well recall her great aunt's photos from 1918. There were funeral torches attached to the corners of her coffin and wheat bound in wreaths and sheaves all along the middle... mouth gaping open. Any way, enough of my stories. Thanks so much for this lovely video, Sue. Hope you had a glorious visit. Be blessed and be well in all things.

What a fascinating place Sue. I wonder if this place is the equivalent of the monumental stonemasons that we often find just outside the graveyard gates. It gives you the idea of what you can buy for the graves. Thank you so much for taking the time to find these wonderful places. Since we’ve become disabled we can’t do the graveyard expeditions as we called them. Scotland has some lovely wee places

For some folks all they had was that last photo. All my loved ones are gone. I'm alone. I found my hubby deceased outside. I will never forget it. It haunts me. When I see those postmortem photo's my heart goes out to the family but I also understand. Heart breaking.

I think toddler and older children do invoke sadness. They have been in life awhile & have attachments to the people who love them & whom they love, as well. It’s more for the people they have left behind here, I think. Once they are in God’s arms, all is Good for them. It’s those left still in Earthly life that mourn. 💚💚💚💚

It is so interesting to see how so many funeral customs are the same across many countries and oceans. But then there are the poignant, unique customs in those countries too.
I love those sweet porcelain flowers, and the pictures are so touching. You are right, it is like when I see their pictures I say "hello" to these sweet souls. It reminds me there are sweet souls alive now...and to take the opportunity to say hello!
I am amazed how well-preserved and untouched by vandals this location is. I am happy to see the respect and love for those who have paved the way for us that follow.

They all had lives, they lived, laughed, loved and cried, just like we all do. Looking upon their faces brings them to life again and I love that, I love that for a few minutes whilst we look at them they exist. But seeing the children...absolutely heartbreaking. I don't speak the French they do in Belgium, but I think those graves devoted to the Zusters are actually an order of Beguines, which is really neat. It's abeen a while since I read about them, but the Beguines were an "order" of lay sisters (they lived in cloisters and took vows of poverty and chastity, but wer enever ordained or under the control of the medieval church. They often specialized in women's health, specifically obstetrics and midwifery.

Hello Sue…… what a lovely place! But I agree with you about Lena’s death bed photo….is that really how you want your loved one to be remembered? I’m sure there must have been happier ones they could have used. That’s sad. Then you get the baby Monique!
So heartbreaking! Yes! It does feel as if you have now met the person when you see their photo likeness. I did like the little museum
You found…and like you I love those old porcelain or bisc ware flowers. Just a shame they break so easily on a grave where a lawn mower can hit them. As a child I remember a beautiful floral arrangement in bisc ware with two doves and a glass dome over the top to protect. I can still remember how devastated, I was aged nine when I visited and found a stone from the mower had hit the glass, and after that it just went green an crumbled. I wept. Never saw another one there. Lovely blue sky and green trees etc!
You mentioned a man from Barton Bendish in Norfolk. I know Barton Bendish, very flat farming land, not a large population, and I don’t recognise the name. Fancy finding him out there!! The graves here seem much more packed in together …but I like the trees hanging over them, almost protectively…. Thankyou for walking in the heat, and sharing your beautiful video, I’d love to visit myself, but that may not happen, so it’s huge for me, when you do this . Bless you and Thankyou so much. So many beautiful, beautiful things in this cemetery! Walking down the mossy rows looks like a moving impressionistic painting. The individual graves are so artistic and personal. As for that private section, I wonder if all the cemetery elements were once for sale? "Tentoonstelling" means exhibition, but I wonder in what context. Nice post mortem photo. Some of them can be very beautiful. I have seen a few around here. They're not for everyone, but sometimes that's the only photo the family may have.

In the exhibition around minute 4:20 there are quite a few original grave markers in metal. These were about the only markers before the introduction of a bluestone. In the cemetery in Baasrode near Dendermonde you can still find such grave crosses in metal in the cemetery itself. The flower arrangement behind glass is possibly a piece made from the hair of the deceased. There are several more examples that are exhibited in Ghent, Dendermonde but also in Bruges.

Yes, nuns, it is a huge cemetery and other sections too like the new area and war graves of German soldiers and Belgium soldiers, where they fought and most died right there too but times slipped by so fast so I just didn't get a chance
