For any Asian household; a simple wooden chopstick will suffice. I really want the new motherboard button to relase the gpu but maybe in 4-5 years time once i completely upgrade my pc.
I found a reddit thread that suggested a wooden chopstick, and I managed to make that work perfectly (never slipped either, which was a relief) I found it a lot easier to push almost entirely from the side (like the back of the pc case, rather than straight down), thinking of it as pushing the clip 'back' rather than 'down' (or I guess forwards, since that's towards the front of the case?) The chopstick was super useful because of how long it was though, I have one of those fat new-gen cards and a giant cpu dual-tower cooler leaving me less than an inch of space to work with over the GPU. Anyway, thank you for the video, it was helpful, and I'm glad I didn't use a screwdriver for it.
I broke my retention clip last week taking out my RX 6600. The mistake I made was unscrewing the i/o and lifting my card first before pushing on the retention clip, thus forcing my card out and the clip came with it. Luckily, I repaired the clip and slotted it back in. Thanks for the tip!
@ I’ll continue to try. I’ve been doing it for two hours and it’s not working. It’s my first build too. I was almost done. I just needed to take it out to make the connector on the card sit flush
Something else to add that the video didn't mention- if you've tried pulling on the card before that the clip might not want to unlock no matter how much you push. You need to first push the gpu in again so it's properly sitting in it's socket, which would release the tension and allow the "lock" to be released with very little force.
I swear I was confused why I can't pull out my gpu easily when I first built my pc. I forced it and then the tab was removed from the mb. I didn't know where that thing came from so I just put it aside and inserted my gpu again. I only realized where it belongs when a technician noticed that it's missing. Luckily, the tab was able to slid back in without issues. It's really a horrible design, and lots of noob beginners like myself might miss on that.

OMG Thank you so much for this! Had to walk away from my computer when I managed to get my RX 6800 XT stuck partway in its vertical rider slot. Fingers weren't doing it, but a spudger worked perfectly! Wws worried i broke it but all good
is it possible to replace the clip after it broke? In my particular situation I couldn't see any movement of my card after releasing it.. I had to push it down until it broke then I knew for sure it has to be released now. I'd rather brake the plastic than graphics card.
I broke the clip on my $800 MB (using the same tool you did) 8 months ago. Everything works and I didn't need to take it out so I left it. But still the card is stuck in the MB. Now I need to take it out to install some Type-E right angle adapters and remove a standoff riser which my MB does not use (I think it's randomly shorting the graphics card. At least that's what my deep dive research suggests). How do I remove the card? I used a lot of force and nothing moved. The card was unscrewed, nothing but the stupid clip was holding it in. I just need it out of the MB and to do some maintenance. MB is a ASUS Extreme formula VIII, EVGA 3090 ti so it's a lot of money to risk, but I can't deal with the random blackouts any more.
Great advice. I have a vintage IBM OS/2 version 3. I think 3. I only use it for Lucas arts air combat classics 1990. Yeah, it still works. Well not anymore. The contrast between the sky and aircraft are gone. My target planes almost disappear when flying above the horizon. Now, the monitor wont come on. There's power to the monitor and I can hear the computer make it's start-up clicking noises. Is it the graphics card that needs replacing? Any thoughts anyone? Sure is tough finding a computer repair company in my neck of the woods who are willing to take a crack at it.
I would check the board capacitors, older hardware the capacitors tend to swell and leak causing issues, in this case you have to solder new ones as long as the board had no damage.;
I found this Ma and Pa computer repair shop in my area. They ordered the wrong graphics card and now I have to wait another ten days. Apparently, the original card didn't have it's s/n. I'm not complaining. I've been lucky that the FLT sim has worked this long.
I use a wooden chopstick if I have to take my gpu out. It has long reach and very easy not to break anything. Plus I get tons of them every time I order Chinese food
Any tips on removing the clip altogether before installing anything on the slot? I think the clip should not exist at all; as long as you screw in the card tight enough, the clip will not be of benefit. This design was okay when graphics cards were small, so the clip was easily visible and reachable, but this was a long time ago. Today, on top of the sheer size of the card, a thick backplate may make pushing the clip with a finger very hard even with good clearance, since it may partially cover it. This design should not be utilized any further is my opinion, all new mobos should come with something easier/more advanced, and most importantly safe for the other parts to operate with.
Hey, I broke the tab for my motherboard . Can I still use my motherboard and put my graphics card in back in or do I gotta to replace the motherboard. My graphics card is not damage.
i recently removed my rtx2060 and now when i put it back in the fans wont spin Im wondering what could have broken them i did clean it a bit with wet wipe and push down on the fans a little bit any idea or help would be appreciated thanks. the graphics card still works just overheats if i play games
STRIX motherboards are known to be faulty. i slotted in a 6800xt and now i want to clean it but the clip is practically wedged into the gpu, i had to use a hammer and a trim tool to tap the thing loose.
Or if your unlucky like me and bough an Asus x570 Tuff where they are known to have issues with the lever releasing, of course Asus wont do anything about it, typical, But you can push that down all you want with a GPU installed and it wont release, I've been building PCs for 25 years and never once have I ever ran into that problem.
@@DLMtechgarage I didn't either until I ran into a situation where I needed to take my GPU out and I fought like hell trying to get it to release, I thought I was going to break the lever off the slot or break the slot itself. I found a few fourms about this issue with only the Tuff boards as far as I know just the AMD boards. I ended up buying another B550 board just in case I do break the slot in the future, I may even take the lever off that slot if I can get my 3080ti out of it when the time comes lol.
so i shouldn't use a thumb to press down on it? my CPU heat sink is in the way of it so i'm wait on getting my CPU upgrade in the mail. CPU heat sink out of the way - then i can easily remove the GPU card to replace it(could be better if i put the massive heat sink on, then the GPU card in last)
I removed one of the fans on the cooler to get to the pin and i cant press it down. I have removed the gpu in the past and i remember it being difficult but i dont remember it being this difficult.. Good thing the gpu has a backplate and theres some metal thing right next to the pin just like yours, so i wont damage the motherboard.. From experience i think these pins start to become more loose over time if you tend to remove the gpu often, if not then theyre very difficult to deal with.

Thank you! I’m swapping my graphics card for the first time today and I’m nervous. This just relaxed my nerves a ton! I have a bunch of similar soft plastic tools i use for crafting stuff for my dnd table that’ll work perfectly.
Thanks! for this. I used a "spudger" from an old iFixit repair kit.
This was a lifesaver. Turns out a wooden spatula works to do it too. ;)
OMG Thank you so much for this! Had to walk away from my computer when I managed to get my RX 6800 XT stuck partway in its vertical rider slot.
Fingers weren't doing it, but a spudger worked perfectly! Wws worried i broke it but all good
Glad I could help!
is it possible to replace the clip after it broke? In my particular situation I couldn't see any movement of my card after releasing it.. I had to push it down until it broke then I knew for sure it has to be released now. I'd rather brake the plastic than graphics card.
not sure, I don't know where I would even get it from.
MB is a ASUS Extreme formula VIII, EVGA 3090 ti so it's a lot of money to risk, but I can't deal with the random blackouts any more.
pressing the tab. wont come out. it moves slightly never all the way
Great advice.
I would check the board capacitors, older hardware the capacitors tend to swell and leak causing issues, in this case you have to solder new ones as long as the board had no damage.;
@@DLMtechgarage That's very very valuable info. mini solder? I can do that. I just hope that I can match them up. Thanks a whole lot.
🤣🤣
i got this problem... even with it feels release gpu wont come out. never took out my gpu since i install 😝 i got not problems before my current pc
Ordered a new PC and going to be re-using my current GPU, I hope this helps!
It'll come in handy when you swap your card in, good luck!
Extremely helpful. Just used this to get my GPU out. Thanks.
This design should not be utilized any further is my opinion, all new mobos should come with something easier/more advanced, and most importantly safe for the other parts to operate with.
agreed the design is outdated and gpus r way bigger now
Hey, I broke the tab for my motherboard . Can I still use my motherboard and put my graphics card in back in or do I gotta to replace the motherboard. My graphics card is not damage.
you can still use it with the broken tab
I’m having this issue with the z490, doesn’t seem to work with anything (pencil, flathead, chopstick etc). In the past Im able to use my finger.
i recently removed my rtx2060 and now when i put it back in the fans wont spin Im wondering what could have broken them i did clean it a bit with wet wipe and push down on the fans a little bit any idea or help would be appreciated thanks. the graphics card still works just overheats if i play games
Can you tell me the name of the motherboard shown in this video please?
asus strix x570
I have an asus z490e and i just broke the retention clip. Can i swap it with one of the lower ones?
not sure.
Thanks! You kept be from ruining a very expensive video card xD lol.
Always worth a little search before you yank something out of your motherboard.
STRIX motherboards are known to be faulty. i slotted in a 6800xt and now i want to clean it but the clip is practically wedged into the gpu, i had to use a hammer and a trim tool to tap the thing loose.
Use a popsicle stick or tongue depressor . its light wood , soft and dry . Perfect tool for this .

You know there's AdBlocks even for mobile browsers right?

Well thats a you problem innit?
@@tawoorie it's our problem innit
Dude, you're the best. Been having so much trouble with this shit. Goddamn.
mine cant be pushed down -it goes sideway- im already at the screwdriver level
might be a mobo mount issue... not sure on that one!
Or if your unlucky like me and bough an Asus x570 Tuff where they are known to have issues with the lever releasing, of course Asus wont do anything about it, typical, But you can push that down all you want with a GPU installed and it wont release, I've been building PCs for 25 years and never once have I ever ran into that problem.
did not know they had issues!!
@@VikingDudee yea it gets sketchy, i sometimes get nervous.... especially with the crunching sounds lol...
so i shouldn't use a thumb to press down on it? my CPU heat sink is in the way of it so i'm wait on getting my CPU upgrade in the mail. CPU heat sink out of the way - then i can easily remove the GPU card to replace it(could be better if i put the massive heat sink on, then the GPU card in last)
My mainboard was too rigid it impossible to remove the graphics card this video just save me
You can also try a lego brick separator
What is the plastic tools name? I cant push the slot open since the gpu blocks any reasonable angle
would help an amazon link to that plastic tool. thank you

My 4K60 pro MK2 feels stuck in my motherboard.. do I have to forcefully take it out ? I don’t understand
just wiggle it out slowly is my method.
How can I fix a new clip on? Mine seems to be missing, surely they just push on in some way?
not sure, def need to see how they work
