    Was prepping myself for an investment into new TCCM and transfer case motor. Watched the video. Bought a brand spankin’ new soldering iron (30$). All works now - 2WD, 4WD and low :D

    Just did this to my 2000 Silverado. Service 4WD would come on almost every time I drove, sometimes no indicator LED next to selected mode at all, sometimes it wouldn't swap to/from 4wd or would take many tries to swap (ended up driving in 2HI in snow then 4wd on dry for a while because it would not swap right away). BUT Works like a charm now! Thank you very much Mike!

    Thanks Mike for the video. I have had this problem with my 03 Silverado for a year now. I finally saw your video and it seemed to work. I was dreading taking it to the dealer since they will charge you and arm and a leg! Thanks again!

    Great video Mike. My 2000 Silverado 4 wheel panel lights have quit and it's tough pushing the right ones in the dark. After watching your video, I think I'll take the module out and pull the PCB and change the bulbs under the light pipe. I was going to buy a new module but now I see that a simple repair is the way to go. Thanks very much. Ken

    As someone on this forum commented,
    I opened the fuse box in the engine compartment, found the location of the ATC fuse on the back of the fuse box cover, used the fuse puller to pull the 20amp fuse, held it up to the light and it was blown. Installed the spare 20 amp fuse and went and bought spares. Problem fixed in a few minutes.

    • @GreatEgret
      @GreatEgret 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This isn't the case for pre-2007. There is no ATC fuse below the hood. The 4WD fuse is on the driver's side fuse compartment, but that typically isn't the issue.

    Thanks for the video. My light has been on almost constantly for over a year now. I had taken a piece of tape to cover it because it was ANNOYING. I did everything in about 45 minutes. It wouldn't have taken that long if I knew how to solder. Anyways I think it fixed my problem the switches flow nicely now and the SERVICE 4WD LIGHT has gone off. :)

    Hi there, I would like to share my "service 4wd" experience with you so that you may share it on your channel (I don't make videos). I started my car two days ago to find the "service 4wd" message in the dash of my 03 silverado LS(5.3L Z71). I looked at the transfer case switch to find no indicator lights were on, however the backlighting to display 2HI , 4Auto... were coming on at night. So i looked on youtube and found a video on how to check your swtich (). I check the resistance across each button as you showed and got the same numbers described in the video. Once I ruled out the switch I directed my attention to the Transfer Case Control Module. I was able to use a scanner (OBD Scanner that was not cheap was $1000 and still considered low end), that would read TCCM codes, however I got the msg "no communication". This worried me as I know on alldatadyi they suggest this means the TCCM must be defective and to replace. Remembering my OBD port fuse (cig lighter fuse) blowing and seeing the same msg (no communication) I tried replacing the 4wd fuse at the side of the dash, but again no luck. Finally I saw on many forms that a bad ground could also be the cause. This made sense as not having a good ground is the same as blowing a fuse (no power = no communication). So I went under my truck to the body mount under the A-pillar on the drivers side, to find it was caked in grease from under coating, I took it off, cleaned the bolt and scraped the contact area clean, removed any paint, and it worked! Problem solved, all indicator lights come on when I first turn on and only the 2HI stays on as that was my last selected mode. (tested all other modes and to make sure they work fine)
    So in conclusion: Problem: "service 4wd" msg on dash. Symptoms: no indicator lights on(little yellow lights beside 4Auto 2H...), no communication with TCCM when hooked up to "expensive" scanner (not crapy tire). Solution: cleaned ground wire and contact area on body mount under driver's side A-pillar. Lesson learned: start with KISS (keep it simple stupid) method always, save a lot of money potentially.
    Thanks for posting your video.
    Hope my post helps others who have my issue. If you can't get your hands on a scanner that can read TCCM code, its worth the money to go to your mechanic or last resort dealer to see what codes they get, from that point everything seems pretty easy to do yourself, other than replacing transfer case.FYI: TCCM is under the dash right behind the OBD port for my 03 silverado. Just so people with this year aren't looking to take apart the whole dash if they have this model year. You can easily access it without taking the dash apart. might have to remove the parking brake "release" lever from the under side of the dash as the cable goes foward and runs across the TCCM, making it harder to remove the TCCM. Always good to check for rust/corrosion on the connectors to the TCCM before deciding the TCCM is
    defective; and the ground cable as I said above.Video on how to check Transfer case switch is here: th-cam.com/video/JNWxhIWs8Uk/w-d-xo.html very easy and could save you from replacing unnecessarily (yes the numbers for the spec resistances are accurate)

    Hey Guys, so I live in Calgary Alberta......With this said, our winters get frigidly cold -20C common......my 4wd service comes on/fuse blows/lights on selector switch goes out. Nothing works...found a write up - not sure if its from GM directly. But it states, if your 20amp ATC fuse keeps blowing, but Encoder @ T-case works......front diff actuator works. You're getting get grounds.....good voltage at connectors....( Bench test front actuator ) and it works.......and there is no code for TCCM ( Transfer Case Control Module ) ....it is the 1640 connection - they used 18 gauge wire from factory but during colder than normal ambient temps - it will spike in amps and blow the fuse....The easy fix is replace with 25amp fuse. OR replace the Orange wire - with 16Awg. DONT GO SPLURGE ON PARTS BEFORE YOU DO ALL YOUR CHECKS!!!!

    I'm assuming my 04 4x4 1500 suburban traction controls are identical to yours, I have 2 questions. The little lights on control buttons sometimes switch around without me pressing the buttons, is this a button-module issue and just needs to be replaced? If so, can I just buy a new and does it have to be reprogrammed or plug and play? Thanks!!

    • @mefedler
      @mefedler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your problem as you describe is probably the same issue I had. You may be able to re-solder the contacts to solve the problem. My control panel is nothing more than some switches and indicator lights. No programming needed if it was to be replaced. Since yours is a different model year, I don't know if your control is identical.

    hi mike i just bought a chevy truck like yours but i don't know how the 4x4 system works.
    should i put the truck in neutral when i go from 2HI to 4HI or can i stay in drive?

    • @mefedler
      @mefedler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The truck should be in drive and it can be moving to switch from 2WD to 4WD or back from 4WD to 2WD. To switch to 4WD low the truck has to be stopped and in neutral as I recall.

    What will cause my 2000 Silverado to shoot the 4x4 fuse as soon as I put the fuse in

    • @mefedler
      @mefedler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I have said before, I am just a do it youselfer posting projects as they come up that may help others. If the fuse blows as soon as you put it in you obviously have a short in that part of your vehicle. The fuse is there as a protection and warning device. If the fuse wasn't there and a short developed it would burn up the wiring, a component or worse yet set fire to you vehicle. You or a mechanic must locate the short and correct the problem before your system will operate correctly again.

    The reason for a dislike on your video was that after you finished and started the engine, you said you could tell by the lights it was working... you did not put the camera on the lights so we could see them work, second you said it was working but you didn't want to put it in lo 4wd because you'd have to put it in neutral and you didn't want to do that because you were on a hill and didn;t want it to roll. That's kind of well, weird, do you not have brakes? I put mine in 4 lo while sitting on a hill or level, you do not have to be on level ground to go into 4 lo, what would it be of any use in the mountains when you really need it if you had to wait until you found a level piece of dirt to use it!!! Sorry, that just leaves me thinking, it didn't work and you just wanted me to think you fixed it by fixing a cold solder joint. That is such a very rare thing to go wrong, if ever. I don't trust a repair video that does not show the full repair and prove it worked! Too many video's on here of people who just copy other people who never actually did anything.

      He said the problem only occurs sporadically and so it may be a week or a month before it next occurs. Wouldn't that be a very long time to sit inside of a partially assembled truck waiting to see if it was going to malfunction, without a really attractive assistant?
