Cleaning Fossils with Coke

  • Cleaning fossils with Coca Cola, sounds a bit crazy, but I decided to do it anyway. I saw on internet that coke, can be used to clean all sorts of stuff, so how about fossils? Do they resist? Do they crumble? Or they could be very well clean of dirt an debris? I gather some "sacrifice" fossils and did this little experiment.

    Interesting video.The bubbling reaction you saw at first was caused by the action of carbonic acid and phosphoric acid,both weak acids that are in Coke. Carbonic acid is formed by dissolving carbon dioxide gas in water and is the primary acid that forms many of the features in limestone caves as it will dissolve calcium carbonate(limestone).Once those acids in the coke completely react with the carbonate fossils the fizzing will stop as will any "cleaning effect".The rapid reaction you saw first was because the very small carbonate crystals in the matrix or covering of the fossils presents many reaction surfaces to the acid where the fossils themselves are made of much larger carbonate crystals and react slower.
    There is another thing you might try but please use fossils that you are not afraid of loosing;soak the fossil and matrix in water a few days then remove the specimen and freeze it.This will break down matrix sometimes(and also the fossil in some cases!!!) and will gradually loosen the fossil.The tougher fossils respond to this well,fossils like thin shelled urchins are many times destroyed by this.Only experimentation will tell.

      Oh my god!! My friend you are trouly a encyclopidea of knowledge!!! I simply loved the idea of rapid changing temperatures in order to clean fossils. I can assure that I' will try that in the future, hehehehehe. Of course with fossils that are not very relevant or rare. Just for the fun or the "academic purpouse" :-) Thanks for your explanation of the chemical reaction! Can I conclude if I had more carbonic acid, or if I keep renewing the liquid for a new one I wil end up damaging the surface of the fossil or end up with a slush of mud, correct? Thanks a lot for the comment!! :-)

      You have to be careful with any acid as it will in fact finally destroy all the carbonate present,including the fossil.You can keep adding the acid(weak vinegar works fine) and the reaction will continue.You can also cover the fossil itself with an easy to remove shellac or varnish and then treat the matrix to the acid.As more of the fossil is uncovered cover it with the varnish and keep adding acid until you are satisfied with the specimen.This takes a lot of trial and error as it is possible to destroy everything.One more thing to consider is to place the fossil where the acid attacks only the matrix getting close to the fossil and then removing the remaining thin matrix by hand.

      That's a very nice sugestion! Cleaning fossils like a pro, the process itself seems farly easy to do but it could take a lot of time, so I need to be more pacient. Sometimes, due to my fault I remove some fossils too quickly and end up damaging the fossil. I must gain some more pacient. Just one curious thing, the acid solution dont affect the varnish? Some of my first fossils I varnish them they look good, the ones that gave shell like parts, but the ones that are rock -limestone I realizei that after the times goes by, the varnish a turns the fossil a little bit orange... But I like your sugestion a lot! :-)

      @D10pete 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The acid should not affect the varnish.You can also try wax as long as you have a way to safely remove it later.You need to use a non-yellowing varnish as it will indeed yellow in time.I like to use a spray like Krylon Artist Spray,that will stay clear.Just make sure the specimen has all the acid and water out of the specimen by drying it very well or when you spray the varnish on, the water will try to evaporate from under the varnish coat and make an ugly mess under the varnish.

    Very cool video. With some acids you need to refresh them. Vinegar lasts alittle longer than coke cola because it works a bit different. You will sometimes see bubbles but they are tiny. I have tried to dissolve several types of rock lol. The coke you probably should have changed it every other day. By the third day you had a good science project lol. All kinds of stuff growing in the pot hehehe. One of the rockhounding channel I watched he used muratic acid. That will eat through rock the table and your foot if you don't know what your doing. But, it is very effective if you have a large chunk of rock you want to get off your fossil. But, don't put your fossil in it or it will be gone with the wind. Thank you for another fun video I enjoy them so much.😸😉☕👏🙏🐚🐚💖 Ms Michal

    Coke is commonly used for cleaning fossils. The Ph in Coke is high and so reacts with limestone. This acid is not going to harm your fossils!! You can leave indefinitely. Ph reactions are short lived and wll not damage

    Hey man! Awesome vid!! I've heard of people doing similar things with their fossil specimans though I've never tried it my self as of yet! How are you, your mom, and the rest of your family doing? I hope your all okay! My grandpa could be better but he could also be alot worse. I haven't gotten to fossil hunt much but I did get out yesterday and find a few small brachiopods and crinoids. Take care my friend! Thanks for posting this vid and making my day a little brighter! :)

      Hello my friend! Unfortunately things are not very well ... unfortunately my mother ended up dying on August 7 ... As you can imagine I have my moments, this put everything in perspective in my life, but I still know that the my mother would want me to continue to do what makes me happy. So I try not to get into depressed thoughts and try to keep my mind occupied ... but it's all very much alive, and I'm having my emotional moments. I hope your grandfather recovers quickly, and that all goes well. I'm sorry I do not give you very happy news and I hope this does not pull you down, what I do know is that we should enjoy every good moment of life and try to spend as much time as possible with those we love. Thank you very much for your concern, it's these little moments when someone remembers us that touch our hearts.

      I'm so sorry to hear of your mothers passing my friend. The death of a loved one is probable the hardest thing one has to go through in life. Also, thank you for your well wishes. You are completely right in saying "We should enjoy every good moment of life and try to spend as much time as possible with those we love". I do my best to live my life this way. I hope things become easier for you and your family in the weeks and months ahead. Healing from the death of a loved one is never easy but it can be done. Stay strong my friend! I'll continue to keep you all in my thoughts and I look foreword to joining you on your next fossil hunt.

      Thanks my friend. It's being very hard to return to a normal live. It's kind of a bad dream... after you pass through all the you realize that things will never be the same.... I guess there's no way to react to this... I will never be afraid of the dark because now I know my mom is watching me. I sometimes remember things of my mom that I thought I dont have memories... We carry or lives worring about the job, money and other stuff that we think that is so important, but this event kind of shake me to realize that the best that we have in life are our love ones... they alway care for us. I will try to remain focus, and functional and continuing doing my videos to help me pass through this. Thanks for your kind words my friend.

      No problem my friend. The road your currently walking is roughly defined but well trodden. Everyone walks this road at some point. If you ever feel like the roads longer then it should be or that the road is taking you in circles turn off and ask someone for directions. Chances are they will know of the road you walk and will get you to the place you need to be.
      Take care of yourself my friend. Keep your boots tightly laced and a smile on your face.

    The only part of Coke that could clean is the phosphoric acid. Someone referred to acid as having a high PH. Acid has a low PH. Not high. Coke is around 2.5. As a comparison, battery acid is around 0.5 and stomach acid is around 1.5

    Interesting video, will try it out after i get my hands on some fossils here
    Nearly got eaten alive last sunday by mosquitoes when i went to see one of the spots so i called Place A quits
    Found a coral rock but havent opened it yet- Place B will be After 6th of September, has to be alot colder as its on the open below a ridge line 11 kms in both ways from a city (little bit of a suicide to go there)

      Hehehehehe, cleaning fossils with lemons sounds really interesting :-) If there's an insects that I hate, are flys and mosquitos. I used to spend the hollidays near a river, and in the summer at night they were a living hell, specially the smaller ones they bite a lot and cause serious rash...I bought a fly courtin to put in the window but the little devils were so small that they pass through. So I bought some tissue similar to womens nylons with very very small gaps and made a frame in the window to strech the tissue and finally I could have a nice night of sleep. Maybe you could make some sort of cape similar to the ones that the persons that care of bee hives use:-) :-) ( just a crazy idea...). Thanks for the comment!! Hope you find some realy cool fossils next time you go fossil hunting!!

      Zé Jurássico found a very old and calcified sea shell in the sea that is turning to a rock,does it count as a fossil ?
      Outside it looks like a weird rock with weird shapes and dosens of different colours

    • @zejurassico
      @zejurassico  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      StalkeraBg Well I guess that any organism that are replace by some form of mineralization we can consider a fossil... but I belive we must take in consideration the age of the organism. The process of fossilization can occour very fast in some conditions.
