    blown away ; just learning so seeing how they look externally first then cut really helps .I mostly find agates that have their fortifications already exposed by the sea up in Scotland. I don,t have a saw yet as I have a perverse fear of blades and drills but I would love to get one .Once I acclimatise myself to the noise and the fear of chopping any part of my anatomy off ; I'm sure I can do it . You reminded me of me clambering about the rocks haha and trying to stay upright . Really enjoyed .Thankyou.

      You don’t use a sharp blade, it grinds the material away so think of it as just a grinder in the shape of a saw blade

    Awesome, I live just around the corner from where this is filmed and I was told by an owner of a fossil shop that my son and I often visit to go and have a look there. He had a couple of items from this beach to show us and they looked amazing.
    Seeing the shapes and colours really helps and by the end of the video I was spotting some of them when you stopped the camera. There's such a range of stones it's really hard to pick anything specific out!
    My son is mad about finding things on the beach, and if I could get one of these for him to break open we'd both be super happy!
    We usually find quartz and crinoid fossils on our local beach, so but finding one of these would blow his mind 😀.

    • @ukgemhunters
      @ukgemhunters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Lara
      I'm glad your loving the videos.
      The weight I to do with if there hollow or not, after a while you start to notice subtle differences between the 2.
      As for shape there is lots of different types in the uk.
      In this location they come in several different shapes, grey rounds, grey red or black round hexagon/flat sided, bubbly and smooth.
      It takes a lot of practice but you soon learn what to look for.
      Pause the video where I find them and check out the shape

    Do you have a background in geology or geography, I got the tools and the passion, but don't know what kind of places to start looking, I wanna hit up north wales as it is near by, god know what kind of minerals are to be found. Hope you do more educational videos on kind of spots to look for minerals and clues to a good site for mining, panning geode hunting etc

      Hi, I don't have any educational knowledge, just self taught, same as Andy.
      We have just read lots of books and just in the last few years starting to get a good grasp on things.
      Try and find some books on old mining sites around you as sometimes it tells you about what they where mining for and what to find in the spoil heaps.
      And take a look at local geological maps.
      I know near me they did test holes so I know the depth of most bits, but only in a 2mile radius of my house

    How do you decide which geodes to crack with hammer and which to saw in half?

    • @ukgemhunters
      @ukgemhunters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can tell by a few ways, Wright is a good indicator the lighter they are the better chance of them being hollow, you get used to the weight after a while and know what to look for, also if you can hear them rattling or have water splashing around inside.
