    The "Lucky Dog" was introduced via the Gentleman's Agreement, when they stopped racing back to the S/F at caution. If there was a lapped car close by, the leader would tend to slow down and let the lapped car by. That was all replaced with "the lucky dog" since racing back to the line under caution was considered dangerous.

    • @jimmieroan9881
      @jimmieroan9881 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      close, but i been watching this since the 50s and i never remember a driver slowing down and letting someone get their lap back, i guess it happened but the real reason was the danger involved in running 200 mph under caution to the start finish line, they lined up according to how they got there, not when the caution came out. lots of infighting and blame during the transition too.

    In the late 1990s there were rumors that nascar was going to add a new road course, but make it a street race on old blacktop and dirt roads in a rural area of the Carolinas. It was to be a throwback to hauling moonshine.
    I would pay good money to see something like that now. Even if it is a gimmick.

      Was going to say the same thing. Just wish they would have tweaked it a bit to have multiple lucky dog's per caution, but only if they were within a certain time behind the leader.. so it would resemble the leader backing off out of turn 4 and giving the lapped cars their lap back.

    They used to freeze the field on a caution at the start/finish line instead of at the instant of the caution. The leader would sometimes allow lapped cars just behind him to pass and get their lap back. Or if the leader chose not to they could race him for it. And of course cars could race for regular position as well. When the obvious flaw with allowing cars to race to the line could no longer be ignored they changed the rule to freeze the field instantly. A surprising number of people actually argued against changing it, convinced among other things that freezing the field would trap too many cars a lap down with little hope of ever getting it back. The lucky dog was a concession to them. The lucky dog name came from the Fox broadcast. One of the broadcasters would always call the driver who got waved around a lucky dog, and it was kind of catchy so it stuck.

    the "Lucky Dog" began because of changes of the rules of caution flags. before the lucky dog, drivers would race to the caution before slowing down and there was an unwritten rule between drivers that stated "if you let me lap you easily, I will let you pass me if the caution comes out while racing to the caution". due to near track blockage before the start/finish line and excessive racing to the line, NASCAR went to the freeze the field at the moment of caution which eliminated the gentlemen's agreement I mentioned earlier so NASCAR gave the drivers the lucky dog which gave back a small something that was taken away and now adds racing for the lucky dog as well as fighting to stay on the lead lap.

      @@badad0166 you guys need to read or watch some of nascar history, none of you seem to know that we used to race back to the start line when the caution came out, lots of accidents and lots of heated discussions about positions. your restart position was determined by the order you got back to the line, someone mentioned a gentleman's agreement, nascar kind of left it up to the drivers to try to work it out, big mistake, some slowed and some didn't and got passed for position. you can watch some of the old races and see that if you choose to not believe an old man that was there. ive been involved in racing since the early 50s, was lucky enough to be at the 73 and 76 daytona with Tom Williams of Schertz tx, 73 we took a late model stock, now xfinity, he finished 10th i believe. these were actually automobiles converted to race cars then, his was a 67 chevelle, in 76 he entered a cup car and the engine blew about halfway through the race. these were the times that fans were not allowed in the pit and garage area, much calmer and safer than today. nascar had the pretty girls then too, i forget which year, i think 73, there were some from union 76 and also from accel, i still have my black jacket from accel and a red stp jacket. richard childress was still driving, if you call it driving, we had the stall next to him in the garage on year. and nascar had real announcers back in those days, not the ego maniacs of today, running off at the mouth like in a barroom. oh well, my memories of the good times, sorry if i bored you with them.

    The only thing I see in NASCAR is being consistently inconsistent...I look back to many years ago as a Milwaukee Mile observer and reported debris on the backstretch being lug nut that felt could be unsafe due to where it was...fans and competitors alike...however NASCAR chose to wait roughly 20 laps to come back and ask if it was still there...if you can't throw a caution for debris in the first place why wait 20 laps to bunch the field up at that point and let the best driver at that point win without any run to a green,white checker kind of finish??? If debris is called in...how should it be taken...spectator or competitor??? As well in regards to stage racing that is for the people that race Thursday, Friday and Saturday night ad well as other nights of the week....these are supposed to be professional drives...no need for breaks put the true strategy back into it...miss the days when true strategy mattered...

    I’m fine with kissing the trophy girl staying in the past. It was fitting for the time but now it would be very awkward watching a married man making out with a girl while his wife and kids are on the stage with them awkwardly watching.

    The lucky dog rule was to take the place of racing back to the yellow, not necessarily a gimmick

    You failed to mention that the lucky dog was actually inspired to keep cars from racing back to the start finish line after a caution, it was dangerous.

    Had me at Gimmick shows Nascar logo in the dictionary lol. Nascar as a whole is a gimmick. They don't even make the top 5 best tin top, closed fender race cars in this country. Trans Am is way better. The American endurance racing is way better. Any super late model or pro late model racing is better. The truck series is far and away the best of the "big 3" and pretty much anything else you can think of is better.
    Perhaps Nascar should look at it's Brazilian series cars. 100x better than the 20 year old Austrilian Super V8 cars they use now. PLEASE Tony Stewart make a new series and save top shelf stock car racing.
