Ehh, the only thing that comes close (actually beats) the Cummins 12 Valve is either the Cummins Signature 600 Series, the CAT 3406b (and e) and the CAT C-15 IMO. Best sounding engines of all time. 👌
You need to tow with a 1st gen with a 3 speed automatic transmission that is a true experience I love towing with my 3rd gen but still is fun to go back and tow with the 1st gen
I'm a ford guy ,love my fords . I never really thought much of dodges until I bought a 03 2500 24 valve. This truck changed my mine . Love how they sound ,love how easy they are to work on and I love how the front ends look it definitely grew on me.
That 12 valve will hold more power on stock bottom end than common rail and a failed injector on a common rail = hole in piston while the 12 valves usually misfire
Nice rig, good first tow all things considered. Adaptability is the key to success! If you haven’t already, I would go with the remote PacBrake exhaust brake, mounts on the down pipe under the truck. A good mechanic recommended it to me. He said it reduces overheating the turbocharger. I had them install one on my 01 24v HO 6 spd, the year after I hauled a 3/4 ton gas pickup with some extra fuel & gear in the bed, and my job box with all the truck stuff, probably between 8500-9k on a bumper pull. Next tow was a 9800 (dry weight) Airstream,, braking was a breeze and the EGT stayed in the sweet spot. Total game changer. Huge benefit in traffic as well.

Sweet first pull, I’d love to put an exhaust brake the 96, should be picking up the 97 next week🤞keep the 12 valve content cummin and thanks for sharing👍👍👍🇺🇸
One thing to be carefull of with the second gen trucks when towing heavy is that the frames are weak in the back! It’s one of the reasons why they didn’t use them for tow trucks or service trucks! The odd one you do see has probably had the frame reinforced. The extra cost of reinforcing the frame made them cost prohibitive for tow trucks and service trucks!
Yup I got a 40 foot load it down with20 bales large rounds sudam grass. Tried loading double once just to much for all of it again pulls no problem but stopping it just tuff with that much weight. And no exhaust brake. Plus I'm breaking in a new trany less than 2000 miles on it likely les than a 1000 😃👍

Damn, I'd love to put that 6 speed in place of the 5 that's in my 99 3500 drw. Yeah, I know, 24v. I had a 12v in my 93 w250. Which, I still wish I had. But I needed a little more towing capacity. But now I'm looking at a 2019 4x4 3500 srw Laramie HO. It has 23,000 towing, that is plenty for what I need. It's a lot more than the 99. Going to look at it this weekend. Keep up the videos. You and TFLtruck are on the top of my watch list.

@V-BELT and SON I don't suppose your looking for a smaller project truck. She needs a bit of work. But Runs and drives, has a really high weight limit for such a small vehicle even(somewhere around 2800lbs in the bed). Its a 03 Dakota Sport Cab, with factory body kit(stampede package).
@@thefumminspagerpope4452 true they're not cheap lol. Good thing I got mine for free haha, sure is nice to have high idle exhaust brake warm up in winter.
What kind of exhaust setup do you have on there? I have a 96 with a 5 speed that still has all stock exhaust. Wondering what I can do to get it sounding more like what you have going on.
You sound like you skipped the VP44 truck years completely. Mine's a 2001 3500, 5.9 HO & NV5600 6 speed, 3.73 gears. You also didn't mention what gears your 12 valve has, at least by 7 min into the video. Also, a lot of states watch for trucks towing beyond their rated towing capacity, never mind whether it works or not, it's still a moving violation. I figure my gross towing capacity at 15,000 lbs from figuring all the weights and stuff. I tow a 30' toyhauler which runs about 13,000 lbs with a 99 mustang inside. There's some tough grades on the Interstate 15 heading south west from Las Vegas towards LA, just before you get to the town of Baker. Towing with a 94 Ford Power stroke 5 speed and 4.10 gears with the trailer only loaded for camping so maybe 4500 lbs lighter, I went up them at about 35 mph in 4th gear. In the Dodge towing the mustang home in the toyhauler It went over the top at the speed limit of 55 mph in 5th gear with a lot of throttle left. Oddly enough, on pretty much equal loadings doing essentially the same 4900 mile trip around the country both trucks running about the same speeds, 60 mph unless the limit was lower, got the same average fuel mileage for the trips at 12.5 mpg. You mentioned rolling a bit of coal. I've never understood why anyone would think that's a good thing. That black smoke is unburned fuel that could have gone to making power. I dislike it so much that I'm strongly looking at various trucks and twin sequential setups. I don't intend to increase the fueling hardly any as I want my truck to last a million years or miles, whichever comes first. Rolling coal is also hard on the exhaust system because it also is an indication of high EGT (exhaust gas temp) which isn't good for your truck. I currently run a Madds Smarty tuner, for normal around town and light towing on the economy setting, gets 22.5 mpg at 55 mph cruise, 19.5 at 65 mph, and 16.5 mpg at 75 mph. I found out the last when I had to make a semi emergency drive from my home at the time in Rosamond CA, to just inside the southern border of Minnesota to retrieve a family heirloom that was going to disappear if I didn't get there soonest. I left 8 am Monday morning and was home again Saturday morning, solo. To bad I didn't have my VW yet. A 2003 Jetta TDI 5 speed, it gets 47 mpg at 75 mph instead of the truck's 16.5.
That's the closest truck to my dream truck as I've ever seen. 2nd gen extended cab long bed 4wd 12 valve 5 or 6 speed and red. Just off by a hair with the silver band at the bottom body line. Ever since I saw the movie twister I've wanted that truck with a few minor changes 😂
But you are exceeding the 13k lb tow rating of that truck. I have a 2021 F150 and a '98.5 24v 2500 RAM. Both have a 13k lb tow rating, yet my Dodge was identical to a 3500 with the duals removed. It also has 1100 lb ft of torque and an heavily upgraded 5spd. There is no way in hell that I could safely tow as much with my F150 as I can with my RAM. The tow ratings they use don't seem to add up. Back when my truck was new, I had a local suspension shop upgrade the rear springs a little, even though I had the Camper Package. I have had 5,000 pounds in the bed and it doesn't squat too bad. Much more stable over bumps when loaded.
been wanting to add a 12v 1ton to my garage to just tow with. Nice rigs, simple and do tow well. Towing a modified diesel without gauges though....uh, no thanks!
U get a feel for things if u been driving for long I used to have 96 kw modified propane injection it would pull a full load up the west side of Eisenhower tunnel going east on 70. In hi gear with 45k in the box no matter howuch water or coolant you had just could not move it fast enough to shed that much heat. Always about 3/4 way up had to drop a gear not because of power. But heat. So I settled in at 16 and run 72 mph over the top.
I used to tow a 13k pintle trl with a 97 chevy 2500 the trk knew it was there but did it pretty good considering it had a 6.5td. I now have f350 dually 7.3ps and it still knows the trl is there but does it a lot better
Oh yeah. Coming down sherman hill in mesick county m37 in michigan i slow down to 30 mph and downshift into second with the automatic and without exhaust brake it holds decent down a 7% scaling 22k. People behind my dont like me doing that but tuff. They aint driving a 22k rig.
Odd request, but could you compare this truck to what was the “cream of the crop” gas trucks before the idea of a turbo on a diesel truck was around? That would be a cool video series. I can imagine like brick nose ford gas trucks vs like a 96 12 valve just so people can see how amazing they were for the time
Also second gen brakes them selfs are not great. Did some reading if you have 17s or bigger you can upgrade your brakes to third gen rotors and pads and have lot more brakes
Got am 2004 2500 24 valve auto to bad it don't have the 6 spd in it I haul 22 to 35k once a month with it. Pulling is never an issue it's always stopping gotto pay attention to what you are doing u don't want the brakes hot takes to long to cool em off. Just take it slow and easy
Best way to set up a wench. 👍 I use to have my wench set up the same way. I could use it on the front and rear of my trucks with the hitches front and rear and then my trailer too.
AFTER PROOF READING THIS AND I APOLOGIZE NOW FOR ALL THE CAPITALS AND BRACKETS NOT TRYING TO BE AN ASS TRYING TO BE CLEARAND HELP ANYBODY WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHERE IS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS Anything in our home state of California TOWED/PULLED/TRAILER/COMBINATION VEHICLE of any attachment style ( bumper pull hitch or pintle, gooseneck or 5th wheel) with a G.V.W.R (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 10k ( 10,000 Lbs) MUST possess a CDL A (commercial drivers license). To clarify 9,999 #'s normal Class C license required, 10k G.V.W.R CDL Class A req. Where the confusion most likely lies is PERSONAL USE drivers example: this exact video content, a camper ( bumper or 5th wheel style), a dump trailer ect. Requires a NON- COMMERCIAL CDL due to no compensation ( money, or value gained), owned by driver all vehicles and equipment in use. Another silly law in my opinion is any vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or greater requires CDL Class B to operate. So the ridiculous thing is IF you follow the channel and know Andy's logging truck, you could drive that all day WITHOUT the log dolly on the ground with a Class B CDL but if you hook V-Belts yellow 14k gooseneck to the log truck it would become a Class A required.
@@paulrollinsjr.1845 wrong. Above 26k single requires a cdl b. Above 26k tow unit and 10k trailer requires a A license. Below 26k is good to go with normal license.
I had all interior components to switch a factory auto truck to manual, had it listed for 2 years and no one bought it. I thought it would be gone in a week.
What is a good tuner for my 99 24 valve automatic, I do have a built transmission now, it been stock its whole life just looking for 50 or so hp to help getting up the mountains better
That's funny that you think anything you did was "back in the day". LOL. I'm 70+ and when I say "back in the day" it probably means before you were born. I also had my CDL, drove a naturally aspirated (!) Cummins powered truck usually pulling a pair of 20' boxes, redlined at 2100 RPM, but I loved the transmission, a 10 speed Road Ranger. Sometimes I had to drive a truck with a 13 speed which wasn't great but worked for heavier loads and then there was the truck I had to drive when I made the boss unhappy. It had 3 sticks. A brownie, which we pretty much left alone, then a 5 speed and a 4 speed, which was just so much not fun. I could do with a couple more gears in between the gears I have in my Dodge. One more between 4 and 5 and another between 5 and 6. I like to shift down low and I have to rev it more than I like (comfort for my ears, not for the truck) when towing the toyhauler. 2400 in 5 gets me 1650 or so in 6. Way to big a jump in my opinion. Also the owner's manual says not to tow heavy in 6th below 1600, 1650 is about 55 mph so any hill in CA I have to downshift to 5 not to destroy the diff. I assume that's the danger. 6th is a .72/1 overdrive and that gives about 2 power pulses per driveshaft revolution. Apparently that's enough to push the pinion through the lube and make metal to metal contact with the ring gear. Not a good thing. So, what's the gearing in your diffs? It is a 4X4 isn't it? By the way, my toyhauler is a conventional equalizer hitch and with the torsion bars set right, the rear of the truck drops about 1". Steers great and yeah, if you're going to tow heavy loads like that you really need a Pac Brake, or some exhaust brake. The last steep grade you go down heading east on the I 40 going into Needles is 6th gear and Pac Brake on and modulate the speed by touching the power just a tiny bit. Without it, it's 5th gear and a lot of brakes. I enjoyed your video. I'm going to look for the one you must have made after you put the gauges in. Should be some interesting info there. I'm curious to see what your EGT runs going up a hill.
Bit of a clickbait title don't you think? Sure, rated for 30k on the gooseneck, but you're running what, 12k if you count the load and the trailer combined?
Thanks to your awesome videos I am purchasing my first Cummins turbo diesel 2002 5 speed manual Ram 3500 2 wheel drive extended cab long bed for $7800 with only 226,000 miles is that a good deal new turbo mechanically sound no leaks new clutch new tires clean title Montana truck

People keep ignoring my question forgive me if its dumb 😂 but like besides duallys does anyone recommend getting like a regular diesel truck like this one for towing 24/7? Cause i have my cdl now and wanted a dually but if i can tow with something nicer and smaller then cool.

Where can I find an email for you Sam? I know it's been a fair piece since I checked in and rattled yer cage.........been cutting firewood along with working full time, I think we're up to 36-37 cord since mid September to help fund horse hay for the non-profit riding program my wife and I started with two of our dear friends for kids 5-18 years who are or were in troubled or abusive homes to offer a positive outlet for rebuilding confidence, respect, work ethic, compassion for animals and other people, and give them a chance to just be kids again for an hour. Also the wood cutting allows us to offer this free of charge to these kids who likely couldn't afford any type of cost for something like this, and we wanted it available to anyone who needed or wanted to participate. I'm trying to get my paws on a Diamond C gooseneck as Nov 30th is the end of seasonal firewood cutting on my local national forest lands and will start hauling logs with the 4th gen over the cascades from Eugene to my place in Terrebonne after an extremely generous donation came to us from a private timber company for all the madrone I could use to help fund our program as well. So I was going to email you and pick your brain vs blowing up the comments on here about Diamond C and what you've found to be useful on your trailer or not as well as you haul logs now and then with your two trailers. Anywho, big red is sounding good slapping through the 6 go ahead man box and with some Pacbrake action...........that would be sick! All in due time I'm sure but regardless the ol gal sounds and looks sweet with the Texas pride tagging along, take car Sam and give Boone a biscuit for us

3 of 3 😬👍🏻 beautiful setup 😍🙌🏻👍🏻
Nice old truck I have a 2003 dodge cummins sixspeed I love it
I used to tow a 13k pintle trl with a 97 chevy 2500 the trk knew it was there but did it pretty good considering it had a 6.5td.
I can imagine like brick nose ford gas trucks vs like a 96 12 valve just so people can see how amazing they were for the time
Not a bad idea I could do a video on that
Also second gen brakes them selfs are not great. Did some reading if you have 17s or bigger you can upgrade your brakes to third gen rotors and pads and have lot more brakes
I am pulling the olds 307 out of my 84 chevy so when I find a 12 valve I can put it in and not have to worry about pulling the olds out
Truck sounds like a semi with the manuel miss my chevy 2500 with a manuel tans she was a beast
Good old truck done what it's supposed to do, is work 🙂👍
Move the prime tech around in the yard with it one time
Hell ya!
Got am 2004 2500 24 valve auto to bad it don't have the 6 spd in it I haul 22 to 35k once a month with it. Pulling is never an issue it's always stopping gotto pay attention to what you are doing u don't want the brakes hot takes to long to cool em off. Just take it slow and easy
continue to r and d what i need to do so i can tow a gooseneck with mine lol. make a detailed parts list lol
I've slid the fuel plate on a few 12 valves (P pump) and wow does it wake them up !
Best way to set up a wench. 👍 I use to have my wench set up the same way. I could use it on the front and rear of my trucks with the hitches front and rear and then my trailer too.
Winch is a winch. Wench is a girl
I was told by state DOT that weight didn't matter and no CDL was needed as long as it was for private farm use. Are you saying that is incorrect?
He’s in California
Need a 1st gen now my friend but I love all of them I have a 05 5.9lcummins common rail love it 1
You should drive a 1st gen Ram/ Cummins. The braking performance feels about half that of a second gen and the VE pump is almost anemic in comparison.
Sam, do you have or do you lnow of someone that has a. 12 valve rebuildable engine for my '91 3500 ' ole blue?
Lights look good through the mesh
Just a reminder, it is not a CDL requirement in my state for personal use. Nor in fact your state of Cal. for personal use.
I follow the chp Facebook they bust so many ppl thinking that. Personal use semi
John irwin lol you funny
AFTER PROOF READING THIS AND I APOLOGIZE NOW FOR ALL THE CAPITALS AND BRACKETS NOT TRYING TO BE AN ASS TRYING TO BE CLEARAND HELP ANYBODY WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHERE IS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS
Anything in our home state of California TOWED/PULLED/TRAILER/COMBINATION VEHICLE of any attachment style ( bumper pull hitch or pintle, gooseneck or 5th wheel) with a G.V.W.R (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 10k ( 10,000 Lbs) MUST possess a CDL A (commercial drivers license).
@@alanack67 not just limited to a 10k trailer. I can pull a 16k with my obs 7.3 rated at 10k. So 26k gross.
Put a 64 mm turbo 100 horse injector with 150 fas fuel and gauges
I had all interior components to switch a factory auto truck to manual, had it listed for 2 years and no one bought it. I thought it would be gone in a week.
How much were you asking?
What is a good tuner for my 99 24 valve automatic, I do have a built transmission now, it been stock its whole life just looking for 50 or so hp to help getting up the mountains better
Definitely not a dodge guy I’m a die hard ford man but gawwwww damn is that a rig son!
Hey Sam you plan on leaving the automatic shifter there? Love the build can't wait to get myself a 12 valve
Noticed your in penn valley/ rough and ready area, just bought an 97 power stroke OBS. We should get together and tow sometime
Bit of a clickbait title don't you think? Sure, rated for 30k on the gooseneck, but you're running what, 12k if you count the load and the trailer combined?
Matt France or its just an accurate title
I’m guessing you took those chrome mirrors from this parts truck? I’ve never seen a 98 with those older model mirrors.
Green truck had black mirrors. Someone sent me the chromes
Do they make those in short bed and 3500 long or short bed not dually
Thanks to your awesome videos
I am purchasing my first Cummins turbo diesel 2002 5 speed manual Ram 3500 2 wheel drive extended cab long bed for $7800 with only 226,000 miles is that a good deal new turbo mechanically sound no leaks new clutch new tires clean title Montana truck
DAMN brother #RHEC jacket at :35 🤘⛪
Problem with the new is it’s so restricted no need for it either. EPA sucks.
Good Good Good " I see you Took my Advice & put a 5600 in it" What a Good Choice " do the fuel plate on it "" Back in 1990 We had a 12v - 3500 4 Door Dually that would go 'up & Down the Hiway at 80 mph gross,??? 60.000 lbs... period
This is a g56 swap
Good skills on backing man like your vids
People keep ignoring my question forgive me if its dumb 😂 but like besides duallys does anyone recommend getting like a regular diesel truck like this one for towing 24/7? Cause i have my cdl now and wanted a dually but if i can tow with something nicer and smaller then cool.
Im Lame how much are you hauling? Dually is always best option for towing. Single wheel is ok not great
V-BELT and SON thanks now i finally know man lol. But i was just looking into hotshots and stuff. Picking up cars and junk.
Awesome truck- nice job!!
Thats about how my 2018 g56 truck fuels, 23-2400 it falls off and it likes to be under 2k towing. Polar opposite of my deleted and second gen swapped 08 towing Lol
All in due time I'm sure but regardless the ol gal sounds and looks sweet with the Texas pride tagging along, take car Sam and give Boone a biscuit for us
Is that a disc golf basket at 9:36? Very cool mounting it up high.
Tyler Jones yeah my uncle was a sponsored pro disk golfer back in the day. Still plays for fun
Love that 2nd gen 12v
Hey bro, now that you have your own house can you come get your crap out of my yard.
Haha left my go cart there and the jet skis haha
The 98 is my fav.......
You should get tow mirrors for it
What size trailer that is
Looks like chicken dinner ran across as you were preparing to back up. Yum
My dad did a rebuild on a truck like that
at 17:00... that's the first Pinto I've seen in a looooong time.
Thanks for the vid !
Can i ask what’s up with the auto gear shifter and then the manual trans?
0:47 he said why
Was 4 SPD Automatic, Sam converted it to G56 6 spd Manual
I think the red 98 is worth of the pap cap off the parts truck.
"stops fueling 'cause its stock" ~ "I don't have gauges and its "mildly" modified". So, which is it?
The governor springs are stock. Fuel delivery at low rpm is not stock.
Two different areas
How long is that trailer? 25 + 5?
20+5
what about towing this load with a 95 daully 3500?
It’ll do it but not as well as a new truck lol
V-BELT and SON I picked up a 95 dually 5 speed 4x4 I’m fixing up. I just bought the same b&w hitch. I don’t need to pull heavy often. Staying under cdl limits. I’ve learned a lot watching these videos
I've always liked that look 2 🤙
Awesome video man 😎👌
CDL? Class B needed?
joshua6200 class a
Sam does that clutch give you any gear rollover noise?
It’s not as bad as the newer trucks. Engine covers it up I think lol
Would you be willing to sell the bed?
