    Running an exhaust brake on David's 12v would be perfectly fine as long as the calve springs get upgraded to 60 pound springs. Exhaust brakes like PacBrakes are designed to have a maximum backpressure of 60lbs or less. Cummins themselves have advised people that idle long periods of time to run exhaust brakes, because it adds a load to the engine which increases EGTs, therefore giving a much cleaner and healthier burn. I would highly doubt that 60psi of pressure would reduce the life of a diesel engine that has something like 400psi just from its own compression ratio. If David had more questions eother the guys at power driven, or even calling PacBrake could give him good answers

    • @Sjanzo
      @Sjanzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exhaust brake while idling increases EGT ? It hampers scavenging which effectively is an exhaust gas recirculation system, which is typically used to lower EGT's to reduce NoX emission.... ?

    • @preachers4135
      @preachers4135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Connor W. David’s truck has a K27 turbo and a AFC live- he, or someone working on this truck, is already talking with PDD. You’re 100% correct about upgrading to 60 Lb valve springs and I agree this truck with its size, weight and manual transmission would be a great candidate for an exhaust brake. Head studs will help contain the additional cylinder pressure and also step up to 4K governor springs if they haven’t done so already.

    Before you break the bank with road grinding asphalt, invest in some Geotex fabric to place the asphalt on top of. Geotex will keep the tailings from sinking into the driveway and parking area.
    If no fabric is used, every spring when the ground does it's spring thaw, the asphalt will sink into the abyss.

    For the old school exhaust brake, the reason they dont do the inline flap factory is due to the stress this would cause on the turbo as most trucks use vgt style turbos. Instead it closes the vgt to create a back pressure. Your old school truck uses a fixed geometry turbo, so the only thing you need to worry about is valve float. This can be solved 1of 2 ways. A. Figure out stock psi of valve springs (i.e 70psi) and set your inline exhaust to relieve at 20psi before that (i.e 50psi) this way you never hold in more than your valves can handle.
    B. add stiffer valve springs of your desire to run it more worry free.

    • @Darndiddlyarn

      Meanwhile exhaust brakes were factory on just about every Japanese truck ever, since VGTs were even dreamt of.

    Im a owner of a 2022 Cummins myself and love it. However, I have to say......that GM Cummins is bad ass. I really think my next project should be a sixth gen one ton crew cab Ford (I have access to a primo 73’). Then drop in a 12v and an Allison. I’ve been thinking about my next project for a while and I think that may be it.
    Ans no, an exhaust brake will absolutely not hurt your truck. It’s actually beneficial on the new ones (even though it work a little differently). It actually helps with soot removal. Again, the new ones work a little differently.

    It's great to see someone who appreciates the 2nd gen Cummins. I bought mine about 20 years ago when it had 400K miles on it. I was looking for an older Cummins and specifically with a 5 speed. My previous truck was an older Chevy with the 454 and an automatic which was always heating up on hills due to the automatic transmission. I was towing a 30 ft. 5th wheel that weighed around 13K loaded. Anyway the truck and trailer combination with the Ram quad cab was usually around 21000 and the old Cummins has pulled it fairly well. Now that I am breaking down more than truck, it will probably go to my landscaper. It has just shy of 500K and has held up better than my 5th wheel.

    • @RusticShine
      @RusticShine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is eerie! I have a similar story! I had a 98 k3500 that my 5th wheel hauler with a 454 got spicy going up and down hills around town. Found a guy I knew who had a 96 k3500 dully with a 12v Cummins, nv4500 4x4 and a 9ft western plow. I sold my 98 454 gas truck for 6k and this dude sold me his 12v Cummings truck for 5k! I love this truck!
      The sound, the torque, the 5 speed, the boost, and better fuel mileage, this truck you can't help but have a est shit grin in your face while driving it! I don't care if diesel is 10 bucks a gallon I'm going to be buried in this truck

I'd like to say it's only happened once but it's happened several times, usually requiring to be pulled out. It's convenient, but you can also just leave your hubs locked in if you know you're going to be encountering adverse terrain.

    When I spread recycled asphalt or gravel, I just use my snow plow on my ATV to spread the asphalt/gravel around. When you set the skid shoes to the right height, it does a decent job leveling off the material.

    10:20 To clarify/correct this, 1995 was the first year of 7.3l powerstroke. 1994 was the first year of 7.3l idi turbo. All 7.3l idi engines under 1994 did NOT come factory with a turbo setup.

    My brother just bought a 3500 4WD for towing his 5tn wheel .. Told me he was going 85 without realizing it ... But lighter weight truck and stopping distance on the same load, he said it was scary when he realized how fast he was going ... plus trailer tire blowout risk.

    Hard rake would work much better than shovels. Also box blade on tractor would be best for cutting driveway.

    Hey Dave if you're looking for a good exhaust break for an old truck like that lookup Pacbrake. We've installed them on old 12 valves like that and they work almost just like the new exhaust brakes on these 5th gen Rams.

    I enjoy these characters and the ranch prep content. I'm stuck at home due to gas prices and the shamdemic killed my job and income. I'm still very blessed so no pity party. Would have liked to buy the hybrid Maverick but that quickly turned into a joke attempt due to availability shortages and greedy dealerships.

    Re: exhaust brake. It works best in Full mode and manually downshifting using the buttons on the steering wheel. The RPM must be ABOVE 1,000rpm for the best braking action.

    My 2019 RAM 1500 HEMI is rated at 6900 Max vehicle and 11000 max towing, witch is about what you guys had on your 1st run in the old GMC with the early Cummings engine. The 5.7 HEMI has around 400 HP and torque from the factory. Ive seen many TH-cam videos of modified 6BT Cummings engines that have 600-800 HP and god-like torque!

    Look into the U.S Gear Aux overdrive unit for the NV4500, it's full hydraulic, better fuel mileage and able to split gears while towing heavy. And I do believe they have a hydraulic engine brake option also but don't quote me.

    Exhaust brake on a Cummins is a no brainer, I would not own one without it. Leave it on all the time and you will have no issues otherwise soot and corrosion will make them freeze up. The inline flap style works the same way as the new ones using the VGT, they just create back pressure. Oh yea get one that works on air pressure not vacuum, then you also get onboard air!

    As a reference point for David; my '89 K3500 CC dually with a turned up 1st gen 12 valve (which is the one with stock ratings of 160/400) was dynoed at 330hp (so over 400 at the flywheel) & 770lbft at the tires with a WH1C and POD's (no longer run those, tons of power but they ran dirty & hot)
    Btw: I have a Chevy tranny out of a '04 2500HD - we just installed the big 1 3/8" input & Dodge bellhousing.

      Project Rust Bucket was putting 170 to the wheels with 25% convertor slippage before they put a wrench to it.
      Tractor engines were almost always underrated in the days of mechanical injection.
