That one would have cost me $70 including shipping, handling and import taxes. Good to see the built in capacitors don't interfere with the signal in any significant way. Great video as always!
Every time you switched to the Sony I thought it looked good and then couldn't tell a thing side by side. @smasherjosh5000 Both are the same quality to be honest, there's no point as the cable will just depend on which one your setup supports :) They are both very high quality:)

There is definitively a difference, the unneeded capacitors end up making the image washed out on PS2 due to their increase in the RGB signals, thus pushing everything towards the white color making it look washed out.

Nice experiment and comparison. Do you know how the official ones wire or handle sync (sync on composite perhaps)? Also curious why you chose to use the official PS1 (SCPH-1052) instead of the PS2 (SCPH-10142) cable since you demonstrate with PS2 games and not PS1. Here's my take: I prefer the picture/graphics from the official ones as they are less washed out. However, when blowing up the image to 1080i, it is revealed sycn on luma / RGC cables are very slightly but noticeable sharper (i.e. more defined pixels). Still, I would argue the differences are not significantly different nor trivial--but subtle. Can't go wrong with either and I suppose it will all boil down to price and availability.
I think the Official Sony cable is Sync On Comosite :) Because I couldn't find the PS2 version of the cable & these cables are rare & expensive now so it's not viable to buy them both, plus I wanted to know how much better the newer custom cable was :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Thing is, I've read ideally PS2 should use an SCART cable without the 220uf capacitor (which is inside the official PS1 but not the PS2 ones). Could it possibly have anything to do with two sets of capacitors in series. There are capacitors inside the PS2 which is why the RGC (or any other cable) won't have them. The PS1 did not have these capacitors internally, so they are in the cable as expected. Find it odd that Sony went this route but makes sense when you think about it.

RGB or component is definitely the way to go on PS2 :) No problem, enjoy it when you get a hold of it!
I think the Official Sony cable is Sync On Comosite :)
Because I couldn't find the PS2 version of the cable & these cables are rare & expensive now so it's not viable to buy them both, plus I wanted to know how much better the newer custom cable was :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Thing is, I've read ideally PS2 should use an SCART cable without the 220uf capacitor (which is inside the official PS1 but not the PS2 ones). What will be the effect of this immediately and in the long run is still beyond me but if you'd like to use the the same cable on both consoles, you should use an SCART equipped with 1000uf capacitors.
@@TheAffroShowGameplay if you can say me how know that, i can dissasemble (again) my unit (SCPH-10142) (adquired for 30€ in a local second hand market in my country :) )
Fun fact. SCPH-10142 needs a mod because the cable is fixed to 4:3 mode. the cable have a small circuit, with a step up 5v->12v chip (LTC1262) connected from the pin 10 in the AV-multi (througth the step-up) to pin 8 in the scart. needs retire one of the R220 near to the pin 8 and weld a cable from the +5v pad (purple cable) directly to the pin 8. and wala. 16:9 mode activated. the OEM PS1 scarts cables, SCPH-1050 (JP21 variant (my unit+conversor JP1-> scart)) and the rest of the world variant (SCPH-1050) the pin 8 (11 in JP21) is connected to +5v directlry (both unit have a little PCB with the RGB capacitors and some other stuff) (pin10 in the AV-multi) (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCART pinout for the A:R mode)
Which is one is better for full screen?
The video shows you & I tested games in 16:9 as to answer your question:]
@@TheAffroShowGameplay can 720p work then?
@inderjeetuppal6462 This was not native, it was forced by Free MCBoot & not every game works in 720p :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay ????
In the video, some games were played at 720p but forced to that resolution using Free MCBoot:)
How do the RGC cables compare to Retro Access?
I have never used retro access so unfortunately I don't know but, the RGC cable is a high quality PS2 RGB Scart cable so its definitely recommended if you want a great picture for the PlayStation 2 :)
Raccess is better than nowadays RGC
This is the exact video I was looking for after buying a minter of a PS2 and a SONY Trinitron this evening. I had forgotten that the composite cable SCART was black and white! Then choked when I saw the chancers on eBay flogging the original RGB SCART lead for £140!! So saw thiS £20 LUMA cable and wondered what it was like. You answered my question. LUMA cable it is!
No worries & glad you found the answer you was looking for with this video :)
The official sony cable looks like it was made for ps1 not ps2, the specs for each system are slightly different. You can still use it though.
That is correct & it can be used on all PlayStation consoles up to PS3 :)
It holds up well despite what I was told although I'll always recommend the Sync On Luma cable ^^
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Yeah did some research to refresh my memory the ps1 scart cables have 220uf Capacitors in them the ps2 scart cables dont 👍
That's right, I mention that in the video :)
But despite that, the Sony Official cable holds up well & isn't the disaster I was told xD
But maybe I got lucky, I'm glad I own the cable, its rare now xD
@@TheAffroShowGameplay Yeah its a pretty cool collectors item! Ive got a NOS playstation 1 with box. The box has seen better days but the console works well!
Wow that is fantastic 😀 I love those rare or collectible items ^^
My PS1 is modded but yours sounds way more impressive 😂
En las resoluciones bajas no noté diferencia, quizá en el oficial se veía un poco más brillante. Pero en 1080i ya se nota que el cable RGC se ve más nitida la imagen.
Sorry mate, I only speak in English, could you possibly translate for me? :)
What tv are you using please
It's a Samsung 4K UHD Smart TV :)
Not bad at all :)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay with a scart cable on modern tvs for the ps2. Do you do think getting a crt tv is not worth it for that supposed "extra picture quality"
I'm using the OSSC to get picture to the TV :)
It's up to you, I'm not fussed on this whole CRT vs HDMI debate, I'm happy with my setup but it's all up to you :) I don't use CRT'S so I'm not the right person to make that choice with :)
@@Tagvillainythe PlayStation 2 looks definitely the best on a CRT, nothing compares 👍
I don't see any difference other than the screen adjusting shape.
I usually notice a difference if I look at a grid, or pattern, but I didn't notice anything.
Ah that's just bad editing on my part lol, both screens were the same shape xD
The higher resolution footage does show a difference albeit minor although 1080i did show a fair difference in image sharpness:)
I managed to get chocolate or some kind of brown stuff in my ryw cable spot when I was little it still worked tho🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes it's miracle when technology still works despite us trashing it xD
@The Affro Show 🤣🤣🤣 yep I honestly want to blame it on my sister because I don't remember doing it or why I would I played it everyday and would bring my memory card over to my friends it was a great system
Please tell me which one looks better
The Cable quality should be the same if not similar, Retro Access is simply the US version of what RGC is (RGC is a UK based company)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay but which one looks better, RGC or the Sony cable?
@@MichaelM28 The RGC cable looks better if you needed a clear cut answer:)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay thanks
The official sony cable gives off a slightly brighter image.
Hmmmm I never noticed that xD
I still agree overall the differences are subtle but at higher resolutions the Sony Official cable does fall behind in image sharpness:)
@@nobodytonobodysbusinessthat's probably the case although it would be fair if he compared the official PS1 SCART cable and the official PS2 SCART cable to the Retro Gaming Cables ones
Shit, both look amazing.... Tfw broke asf
Good quality RGB will always look & sound good :)
the difference is insignificant imo.
@Geryboy666 It is until you start using 480p & beyond resolutions although, even there the difference is still not significant unless you plan to use 1080i output :)
I honestly didn't see any difference.
There is a difference at 480p & definitely 1080i but it can be hard to spot without a big display & make sure you hit 4K on the video once its available as the video might still be processing at this time :)
me neither :) I also use a ps1 cable with even the ps3, cant tell the difderence on my crts... (480i all the way)
Ah the low resolution might be the difference as I showed that & higher resolutions which did see some differences to image clarity and sharpness although still not a drastic difference:)
@@TheAffroShowGameplay honestly I expected clearly visible dim issues at least :)) but no... I have no patience to play on flatscreen, ossc, hacking gsm and so highres I don't really care about (especially since most of my games are pal releases...)
All my games are PAL releases lol, I'm from the UK xD
But fair enough, I always say play how you feel is best but I personally love my 4K display so it's nice to get this level of quality on it :)
On video, can't tell a difference. Looks about the same.
Yeah 480p was only slightly better on the RGC & I had to really zoom in xD
1080i was definitely more noticeable but because that's due to a softmod most won't see that :)
