  • I’ve you’ve been shooting for really any amount of time, chances are you’ve found yourself in the incredibly frustrating situation where you just can’t seem to hit a target no matter what you do. We’ve certainly been there, too! It really doesn’t matter whether it’s at 1,000+ yards or 100 yards, there are so many variables that go into every single shot, it can happen on any rifle or at any distance. Scott Parks and Reuben Aleckson join Jimmy and Mark to discuss, from some pro shooter’s perspectives, all the many reasons you may be having those frustrating misses. Spoiler alert - a great deal of it has nothing to do with the equipment, and everything to do with the shooter. Don’t worry, though - if this is your case, it doesn’t make you a bad shooter - it happens to all of us. Just learn from those situations for the future!

What I love about Jimmy is that he is so humble. Seems like a great person.

Oh forgot to mention: I LOVE "Theoretical Physics" (Mathematics). Chaos Theory" being one of my more favorite disciplines. I also love numbers and of course shooting. I have always found a love for numbers a help in shooting.

I remember shooting vintage surplus rifle matchs with the old guys and they always said "lights up , sights up"

I have had two problems that create inaccuracy. First off, the scope moves in the rings. Once I used loctite, that movement quit happening.
Second, shooter mechanics. How the gun is situated. Recoil flinch. .308 Win and bigger can kick hard enough to hurt. And this is not about being a tough guy. You have an explosion near your head creating a violent enaction of Newton's Third Law of Motion. Given the right angle, you could bruise or break the clavicle.
So, recoil management is paramount. Thicker or softer recoil pads. Even adding some foam padding to your clothing. You have to be comfortable and you have to shoot more than three rounds to get good at anything, from first and only shot on a deer hunt, to competitions where you bring hundreds of rounds.
If the rifle has a minimal recoil pad, at the least get a Limbsaver precision fit. Sometimes better is the Limbsaver airtech slip-on. Whatever works. Position your shoulder so that the meat of your pec is the cushion, not the thin layer of skin over the clavicle. Once you you no longer fear the pain, you will stop the flinch, and this allows you to be surprised by the round by gently squeezing. That, alone, stops a lot of fliers.

Fascinating episode. . . . Reuban's "Transonic" story was VERY interesting. Scott's was more familiar to me, coming from a world of aviation. Perspective (seeing) is much different from 5% RH to 100%RH. It is very noticeable in mountainous terrain. . . Sure looks/sounds as if working at Vortex would be a howl. "Maraca"... too funny.

I stumbled across this one again and didn't realize I had seen it before and I did catch something I did not notice before. Jim's experience with a known good rifle that did not work well for him and it was all about the ammo he chose, specifically weight and velocity for the twist rate of the barrel. So, some of my rifles have 1:10 and work well with 168 grain and 180 grain. However, I just bought a new rifle with proven accuracy that has a twist rate of 1:12, which is a slower twist rate. So, just to make sure, I have asked the oracle known as goog-lay but spelled google what is the best .308 ammo for 1:12 twist. While you can shoot any ammo through it and 180 grain is pretty much the upper limit for the average .308 consumer market, the lighter grains are going to stabilize much better at this slower twist rate. And that really is important to consider, even if you are shooting deer at more than 100 yards. Accuracy and usefulness is not always about the biggest and fastest bullet. It is more important to have accuracy, and the right kind of ballistic or expanding tip that does the work needed and staying inside the target animal.

Early on in my shooting life, I was so focused on reading wind because it seemed to me that wind was the worst variable to deal with. I got pretty good at calling wind, but never had professional coaching on shooting. My coach told me “if you suck, reading the wind won’t help you.”

Myelin Sheath is what he's talking about, and the biggest issue is the "standard American diet" won't allow that to happen very easily. You need to be eating a Carnivore diet, and soon you will find that this can happen in record time. You can physically/mentally do everything faster than you ever thought was possible. Grains and Vegetable Seed oils (Canola, crisco, peanut, etc) are preventing most of this.

Not pointing any fingers but fridges do have thermostats so techniquely you could call a fridge repairman to fix a thermostat. I'll see myself out now

Makes me wonder if that reticle shift has any thing to do with thermal pockets? Similar phenomenon happens while flying a helicopter. Generally happens in the afternoon.

In my opinion! If you get your rifle set up properly, I believe it all boils down to the basic fundamentals of marksmanship.
