The year was 1924 and fur trapper Jess Sethington had decided to make his way up to the headwaters of the Unuk River without the companionship of another person. People venturing into the isolated backcountry of Alaska have an unwritten rule and that was to never go alone, but Jess didn’t heed that advice. He was very experienced after all, and his trip was not supposed to be long in duration. Jess didn’t return when scheduled and four of his woodsman friends began the tracking process. They located several of his campsites and then all signs of the trapper disappeared.
About nine years later, gold miners and brothers Jack and Bruce Johnstone, and their trusty dog Slasher, had decided to trek to the productive headwaters of The Unuk River. The labor of the day was exhausting yet rewarding as the remote area was largely untapped and begrudgingly yielding its gold in exchange for sweat and blood.
As the weary men finished up their dinner around the campfire, they heard a distant noise. A drawn out noise unlike anything the experienced outdoorsmen had ever heard. They knew the sounds of every animal in the wild and this noise was definitely strange to them. Slasher's ears perked up and he let out a low growl as he stared into the blackness beyond the light of the campfire. Their profiles glimmered in the fire glow as they listened and waited.
Suddenly the deep moan was closer and more definite. It haunted the darkness of the woods and made their hair stand on end. The waiting and listening only added to the tension. The men checked the actions on their firearms and added more firewood. The noise eventually waned and the miners retired to salvage what sleep they could for the night.
The next year, the brothers made the same treacherous journey and decided to explore an area called Sulfide Creek. In the canyon at the headwaters of the creek the men observed a giant brown bear on the far side. Upon seeing the men, the bear made a line straight toward them. Jack immediately emptied his rifle into the charging bruin, but the bear made it across the raging creek and lifted itself onto the bank, despite an obviously broken back. Jack then pulled his sidearm and completely emptied the click into the bear just before it slipped on the bank and tumbled into the raging current to be swept away. Upon returning downstream to their boat, the men found the oars splintered and their boat with a gaping hole in the hull. All of this damage was apparently done by a bear.
The Johnstone brothers returned the next year and pitched a temporary camp in a flat area and started setting up their sleeping arrangements. In the middle of the night Jack was awakened to see a gigantic dark shape silently approach him while in his sleeping bag. He slowly reached for his rifle but Slasher flashed to their defense. The dog and bear hastily chased each other into the bush surrounded by a cacophonous eruption of barking, growling and gravel and bushes snapping.
Later in the fall of the same year the men investigated the river shore near the camp and found it strewn with partially consumed salmon carcasses and bear skat and tracks. The previous night they were stirred from slumber by the now familiar and eerie groaning noises which faded as the animal departed the area. The brothers went to examine a discovered quartz deposit near their camp. As they returned to camp Slasher raced into the bushes immediately behind where they had just spent a considerable amount of time examining the quart deposit. They could not see the bear but heard the growling and saw the bushes thrashing as the bear and Slasher confronted each other. Immediately following the incident the familiar groaning sound started up once again as the bear was persuaded to leave. The brothers had to seriously consider the possibility that the bear had been silently lying in ambush for them to get within striking distance.
The next summer the brothers returned with their friend George and their reliable protector, Slasher. Bruce decided to quickly examine the quartz deposit again and left his rifle in the boat. While pushing his way through the tangled underbrush Bruce heard a loud snort near the trail. The bear charged but remained in the dense cover which was shaking at the footfalls of the giant mankiller.
Imagine being hunted by a bear everytime you go into an area and you keep going back every year.

What a tenacious bear, to manage to keep surviving for who knows how many years with such horrible injuries. Broken back, destroyed jaw, fractured eye socket and loss of an eye. It had to be in a terrible state of suffering.
And he had to have much vengeance on his mind.he was determined to get even.
poor animals, they can't go to a woods hospital. They do what they can. animals and people are amazing actually with no help but to deal. 😢
I imagine that many old male bears have served terrible injury. mostly from other bears. The desperation during the healing process could lead them to some unconventional hunting strategies.

Those guys should have built a monument to Slasher when he passed away. He saved their lives several times. Dogs are some of the best people I've ever met.👍👊
I agree 💯....but I just GOTTA say this: I feel as though, in my humble opinion, it's almost a downgrade to call a dog a person, as they possess so many high quality attributes that are much more likely to be found in dogs than humans.

Old Groaner was the archetypal Bear with a sore head. Living out his lonely days in pain, with revenge on the men who maimed him his only motivation.
Not an expert in bear psychology, but I'd bet that 99% of the time he was rather thinking about salmon and bear pussy.
Maybe you forgot that he was uninjured BEFORE he attacked and ate his first man? Nope, he just thought he had a quick and easy meal coming to him, and what he got was pain & death. Animals should learn that we respect them, as long as they respect us. You don't cross a human, or sooner or later (mostly sooner), you pay with your life.

Since I started watching these story's I have come to realise how calculating and smart these bear's are. It's terrifying as they seem to calculate and learn our behaviour and seem to Plan their attacks. My heart goes out to the victims xxxx

That must have been the most determined bear "man killer" I've heard about. It's almost like the bear wanted revenge on the human that shot his eye out and left several other bullet wounds.

You ever heard the story of the poacher who shot a tiger, the tiger then found the mans cabin and actually waited for him to come back before attacking and killing him. Animals very much know what revenge is and some are more willing to enact it than others.
There was another near I heard of who had a severe limp. He wanted revenge on the man who shot his paw...
I feel bad for that bear. He must’ve lived in such pain for so long and was desperate for food.

Ambushing must have been the only way this bear could eat with all those injuries. That many bullets in the head and still survived? Incredible.
Bruce put the bear out of it's misery. So sad the damage the bear invoked on their friend years earlier.

That dog saved those men's lives so many times. That bear was all but unstoppable. To understand that he not only survived his initial wounds, but was also able to survive hibernation and still keep going.... I bet he was the sire of many cubs. I can't imagine a stronger bear.

These guys had some SERIOUS balls to go to the SAME camp while knowing the SAME bear with nothing to lose could be waiting for them at any moment.
Love these stories! So well narrated! Just had a black bear sow 10' from my ground lever patio door at the back of my house 2 days ago. I scare them away by firing my rifle into the bank, this time it took two shots to do the trick. Had a grizzly in the same spot 3 years ago, my patio door was wide open and it was looking right at me. I had to force myself to walk TOWARD it and slowly close the glass door, then ran like heck for my rifle. Thankfully, it chose to leave without a fuss. I have no dogs, so my yard is a bottleneck access from the uninhabited mountain range behind me to the many orchards below.

Imagine the horrible lives some of these animals have, tics alone, especially those you see on Moose, thousands of little vampires killing you slowly.
This situation is why you’re supposed to plan your shots very carefully and to make sure to dispatch any animal that you don’t kill initially. With bear attacks, this is a hard thing to do, but someone else should hunt the injured bear down and finish him off if you’ve been attacked and can’t do it yourself. It’s cruel to let them suffer with injuries for years. If you’re gonna shoot something, you’d better kill it quickly, and make sure it’s dead.

It was a terror that desired human flesh, and not many humans will respect that kind of animal...we kill them.

It's not like a human who murders someone for revenge or just because they can, bears are not on our level of intelligence. This bear is straight up disturbing. How many times did Slasher have to protect them and how many times do you go back to a death trap?
Awesome remaster as well, you never disappoint, I’ve always wandered why no one else was covering these very interesting topics of bear attacks! While bear attacks are not the normal behavior they do happen! And we can learn so much from documented attacks to at least help protect ourselves!

Stories like these are why I venerate bears. How it lived so long like that I'd never know, but after all that damage I'd be angry with humans like he was.

what a survivor that bear was, it probably stalked humans because of his injuries he wasn't able to hunt other animals or something.

That is a true trophy bear, no matter what. To be honest, if i ever heard of that bear, I’d hunt it with a group of men and a few dogs intentionally to kill it. Bounty hunting mankiller animals is truly exhilarating and the fact of you are both basically hunting each other provides a much larger challenge, making it incredibly unique to hunting an animal which fears you.

I feel a sense of sadness at the agony that bear must have been in, day in/day out, after being literally riddled with bullets. It's ability to heal is nothing short of incredible but I wish it could have lived it's life without ever crossing paths with our species.

Thank God they finally killed that poor thing! It's no wonder he was so angry and always groaning. My Mom had alot of those types of issues with her back. I feel so bad thinking about it because as kids we did not understand. She had so many surgeries. Halo scars. Cadaver bones to try to replace damaged and deformed ones. She lost about 5 inches of height because of the awful misshapen state of her spine. But it was cancer that actually laid her to rest. She was a very strong and religious lady. 86yrs of torture. This bear sounds just like her except she was rarely mean. But the pain he was in and the inability to just end it was horrifying. I'm sorry for their friend, but being out there alone is not smart. These guys at least had sense. That bear was too strong willed for his own good. Very sad story. Thank you🙏💔🐾🐻

Kinda funny, but the bear reminds me of my cat. Got em ten years ago or so and the vet said he's at least 12... so 22+ years old. My sis named him Popeye; his eye had greyed from a cut on the eye. He had all kinds of battle scars. He ended up losing three of his fangs, grew whiskers out of the back of his legs, and is balding. He ruled the block till about 5 years ago; couldn't keep up with the youngsters any more. He's always been smart as a whip; he'll escort you for blocks, looking left/right/left when crossing the street. His eye got infected a few weeks ago. I've been caring for it, but his eye finally popped cuz a dog attacked him (I guess his namesake has been fully realized). He won, but it's only a matter of time now. I'm making him a coffin; it's 30" long. Gonna use furniture foam with golden silk for the interior, white on the outside. I'm gonna make a cross for the lid and polyurethane it. He was only 15lbs in his prime, but he's just 9lbs now. I'm gonna have to put him down soon. He was a Casanova, a genius, and a warrior. He might just be a cat, but he's gonna go out with honor.
What a beautiful epilogue to a fantastic feline. Nine lives lived.
I remember as a child watching the movie the life and times of Grizzlie Adams. I think he was trying to preserve the bears. I think all the attacks were terrible but at least some of the people were found. God bless the survivors they are the most vulnerable

Such agony the bear lived with I'm surprised infection didn't finish it off. Some big animals are done in by something like infections or anemia etc. Or even for the bear to be killed by another animal

Ever since I saw "The Edge" as a child, bears have been very scary to me.
They should have gone to a different place after seeing it time after time. They added to the problem by shooting it and put more people in harms way. Along with making an animal suffer.

Old groaner was basically a real life classical slasher villain (no pun intended). He was horribly disfigured, had a personal vendetta against his prey, was constantly thwarted by a particularly hard to kill final victim(dog in this case) and even had a notorious sound effect to alert his would be victims prior to attack(his eerie ass groaning).
I cant be the only one who felt bad for the bear

What is wrong with these people? Why would you repeatedly go back to a place that you know an aggressive bear that isn't afraid of man or weapons is? Especially when you're apparently the world's worst shot?

Holy cow that was 1 crazy freaking bear thank God that 1 of his eyes was missing that sucker wasn't going down n all those wounds n it kept on coming i think it was off after all those bullet wounds he was just angry n in survival mode this is definitely movie material i was so into this story from beginning to end omhosh i don't know if you can top this one so suspenseful please find out if you can get a movie out of this wow.

My grandpa always told me about Old Groaner when I was a kid because I live 5 minutes from where the stuffed body of Old groaner is kept in Ketchikan

That is right! Bears are EXTREMELY intelligent and I think they can hold a grudge, just like a tiger. There is recent research that indicates bears are smarter than dogs!

This was no ordinary bear. The thing recognized what a boat was, that's not normal. Those brothers had some balls, or were just stupid, knowingly going into a nearly unkillable man eating bears habitat.
NEVER go into the wilderness alone and most importantly...
NEVER go into the wilderness without a side firearm at least.

Bears are sneaky fast, they appear slow and lethargic, but even armed hunters can become prey, the first sight of the bear seems to cause shock for a moment which gives the bear a few seconds then they raise their gun and if you don't hit him in the heart it'll just piss him off more, you always hear the victims gun was knocked out of his hands, a nightmare scenario.
These men went back to the same area where the bear is ..year after year...
