My family was held captive and harassed all night by a young male black bear that no one could scare off or catch.

Bears are intelligent, aggressive animals and worse hyper curious.
When my wife and I lived in PA. Our home was in a remote neighborhood. A huge black bear parked itself under the deck of my porch because my neighbor continued to feed the bears a trough full of food. This bear was there so he could be the first to eat the food she put out.
All of us told her to stop feeding the darn bears. We told the authorities and they wouldn't do anything. While the bear was living rent free he found I had gophers in my back yard.
He tore up my entire back yard(5 acres) like a bulldozer trying to eat those gophers. I called animal control for the umptenth time and action was finally taken. They transported the bear only 20 miles away. 2 weeks later the same bear comes back.
This bear drama finally ended when that very same bear had enough of waiting for food from my idiot neighbor and went thru her glass porch door and attacked her while she was with her children.
She was able to call the police from her bedroom and the bear was dealt with. None of this would have been necessary if she had just stopped feeding her hoard of bears.
To everyone's happiness she promptly moved out after this incident. One woman created a mass of misery and put an entire neighbor full of people in terrible danger.
One word of advice to anyone living in nature, Please don't ever feed bears or any animals. It is going to bring disaster.
This goes for feeding Coyotes who eat and hunt in packs.

In PA if anyone or anything breaks into your house, you have the Right to shoot it. That woman was totally stupid. Don't feed animals. Bears have a great sense of direction. Moving that bear 20 miles away does no good, as you suggested. That bear found its way back to where it knew it could find food. Did you call the Game Commission? Normally they will bring a Trap to where you live to capture the bear. However if they take the bear 20 miles away, it will be back.

Interesting that he didn't eat the dog food or the potatoes. Sounds like he wasn't starving and in a position to be picky. If I was in an area with bears, I think I'd have steel shutters, at the very least! Maybe a moat, archers at all the towers, and a couple catapults as well.

I live in rural BC and deal with bears all the time(I have a fruit orchard in the wilderness). Best advice, get a big dog, preferably a livestock guardian type. Our Pyrenees, even as a 8 month puppy would take after any bear it saw. Same with any other wild critter like coyotes, cougars, etc. He's always instinctively watching; when our children are outside he follows them at a distance, always vigilant. I was pruning my trees today before leaf out and there he was, on a small rise with a good view, watching over me.

We had pretty much the same experience with a black bear while living north of Wasilla Alaska in the late 90's. That bear harassed us for 5 days and nights. I sent my wife and 3 daughters to her sisters house for a day and a night while I stayed and tried to kill the bear. He was a savvy bear, I'll give him that. I sat on the back roof all night waiting for him to come but I could never get a good shot before he would run to the other side of the house or disappear into the darkness. I carried my rifle with me and a 44 mag on my hip non stop for 5 days while working on the cabin. He finally broke in to another cabin about three hundred yards away one night and was killed by the five workers who where sleeping there ~ Good riddance!

I lived for 12 years on Terlingua Ranch... I had a metal building not far from Big Bend National Park and a first class ranch dog and a smaller dog. One day I was cooking dinner inside with the main door open and I heard a food fight at the dog food bowls... My big ranch dog was barking and snarling, I yelled from inside to shut up... Then the water bowl got knocked over... I turned off the stove and went to see what the racket was all about... My ranch dog was backing an 8 foot black bear out the building. He backed him out into the driveway, turned the bear around, and escorted it off the property. When I called him back he was sooo proud, his tail was straight up in the air... He was like... I agree that animaIs are much smarter than many peopIe give them credit for. Anyone who's owned pets knows this.
l think scientists wanted to think animaIs were dumb and wanted us to think they were dumb, because it made it easier to do unethicaI experiments on them and not feeI guilty.
I suspect we don't even know the haIf of how smart they reaIIy are.
As far as Ieaving the gun behind, generally speaking, most wiId animaIs aren't a serious threat to peopIe.
Notice he's stiII here, teIIing us stories ?
If that bear had truIy wanted to kiII and eat him or his famiIy, l suspect it wouId have been able to do so, gun or not.
Wounding a bear makes what sounds Iike a nuisance bear, into possibly a very defensive, angry kiIIer bear.
So shooting a bear shouId be a Iast resort. They're tough animaIs that aren't easy to instantly drop with one shot unIess it's properly placed. ObviousIy even when he did shoot at it, he missed or just grazed it which is easy to do, even if you're a very good shooter, in the heat of the moment when your emotions are high.
UnIess you're in that situation, you don't honestly know how you wiII react and what you wiII do.

Some people don't know that even a black bear will stalk a human in the woods if it is starving. I've seen videos of people being stalked by black bears on youtube, One guy was a photographer who was fortunate enough to make it back to his truck ahead of a Black Bear that was stalking him. That bear came out on the trail in front of him just as he got into his truck. That bear had planned to have a confrontation with the man, but its pending attack didn't happen because he got to his truck before the bear. In that case, I would have shot the bear. A bear that is stalking a human has to be killed when it is obviously stalking a human. You can bet that the next solo hiker that comes along will be attacked even if that bear was unable to attack the Photographer.

Here in Alaska one NEVER leaves dog food, food, food scraps/trash or dirty diapers outside un-contained or unburnt. Any soiled baby diapers are burned daily. Animal foods and people foods are in locked rooms or containers and we use bear-proof garbage cans. Bears are nothing to fool with when they think there is a food source around that they can access.

Black bears are generally shy and stay far away from humans, especially in areas they are hunted regularly. In PA we have around 17,000 black bears and they generally don't bother anyone. You have to sneak up on them when the wind is blowing towards you, to even get a picture of them.
Of course there are a few bears who for whatever reason, do attack or cause issues for people but it's usually because people leave unsecured garbage outside or feed them on purpose. Or they have some kind of food source that attracts them, whether it be a garden, grape vines, bird feeders or fruit trees.
We are still careful where I live, across from the woods in a very rural area. At or after dusk. I take something with me to protect myself or we stay close to the doors. 😅

This sounds like classic bear problems. Bears do watch us and wait for night when all is quiet. It is typically around midnight to about 5-6 AM. Most people are fast asleep and this is their window of opportunity to take advantage. They will also wait for a daytime raid if there is no activity. My brother had an issue with bears at a remote fish camp in AK. They were very active at night and also daylight hours if he left camp. This was a fairly young bear and it probably left its' mother and was hungry. At any rate this bear would not leave and was a threat to customers as well as a pest.

No matter what any of the animal Rights people tell you, NEVER spend any time in the wildness without multiple weapons on you at ALL TIMES. We can't always rely on just a rifle when in the wild. If a bear surprises you from behind cover to attack you, you will be separated from your rifle with the bear on top of you. You MUST have other weapons on your body to protect yourself. The Only thing I hunt are Coyotes. I leave other animals alone provided they leave me alone. I carry a rifle, wear my 357 that is loaded with Buffalo Bore cast ammunition, a 6 inch buck knife and have a neck knife around my neck. Any one of those weapons can put a hurting on a bear. Note: Any bear can attack anyone or another animal if a bear is protecting its food source. Be Prepared.
