      Louis A. McCaII II I agree with this...if you have your debt paid and emergency fund. I know that could be contrary to popular thought, but folks in his audience need to be making sure that they have retirement investment inline before dipping into recreational investing, thoughts?

    • @louismccall
      @louismccall 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Regardless of if you have your debt paid and an emergency fund, consider what 1% would have done for you when we all knew it they were $200 each, or $1,000 each. At the end of an investment cycle it is easy to say it isn't worth it. 1% is proportional and a very small amount to everyone by definition of proportion. All I am saying is that investment is one way to expedite relying solely on hard work and patience. I do agree with you that those who are trying to get to debt free/break even should not be involved in recreational investing, but calculated investing is different. If bitcoin is news to people, then so is investing and I agree you should do anything you do not know about.

    Very valid question. Bitcoin operates on a blockchain network which means there is an immutable ledger kept of every transaction. You can trust it because there is a ledger kept of every transaction. You cant send more than you own because the ledger has kept track of how much bitcoin you own.

    • @chaz-zq6uc

    I think you should do what you want. Dave gives us a ton of advice, follow what you want. I think his point is that the crypto currency trend is so high risk and people are not treating this with the care it requires. Think of his audience - lots of folks who are trying to build a life and make safe financial choices. Stock market/Bitcoin are volatile/high risk and that's not conducive to the risk averse attitude towards financial success that he suggests. Most folks can't afford to play big enough to make a big gain. Why I say can't afford is because if most of us lost $20K in Bitcoin that would be a setback. People taking out credit to buy crypto is insanity because you've doubled your loss if things go south! You no longer have the money you borrowed (nothing to show for it or can sell) AND you still have debt.
    Again I think his issue is all about the risk to his audience. If you have all your ducks in a row and some extra cash to throw at it, that's different but folks are out here going bananas trying to buy these things.

    I work in the financial industry and have been a long-time investor in real estate and equities. When my relatives, friends, and the plumber I hired the other day are all talking about Bitcoin and how they're going to make a killing, there's a pretty good indication there's a bubble. The only way Bitcoin holds value long term is if it literally becomes a common currency like the dollar. Currencies go to zero and become obsolete all the time. There will be multiple other crypto currencies that will spring up in the next few decades, and is anyone confident that Bitcoin won't become the MySpace of cryptos? It is complete speculation at this point, and many people will learn a hard lesson about investing when the gig is up.

    • @shaneskull820
      @shaneskull820 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cryptos have an odd adoption path where retail investors are getting in before the institutional investors due to its low barrier of entry, decentralized nature and odd origins. We are just now seeing serious institutional adoption with the recent CBOE futures market and upcoming CME launch. Bitcoin may very well become the MySpace of cryptos or it may cement itself in place as the Google of cryptos, only time will tell.

    Dave- long time listener with much respect for you. You're on the mark on most every topic I've ever heard you reason.
    However, you seem to have missed the entire point of Bitcoin. It's a movement for decentralized, peer to peer money, not controlled by politics and the financial elite, but instead- unbreakable math. Sure there are people jumping in to make a quick buck, but there are knuckleheads in every market. Instead of dismissing the most intriguing and honest currency ever created with a strawman argument, DO SOME RESEARCH! If people want to buy bitcoin, encourage them with helpful advice like dollar cost averaging, not investing more than they can afford to lose, so on and so forth.
    I invested sensibly in technology that I believed in, and happened to get rich doing it. I don't care that strongly about the money as I have chosen to live like I did before. But the technology and the freedom, Dave, (please) look into it.
    I don't care if you give it a glowing review or not but if you're going to criticize it, do so on actual facts, not by giving it a superficial look and calling it a get rich quick scam. Come on Dave, you're way smarter.

      I've been following Dave's sentiment on Bitcoin (and other crypto-currencies) for the last several years, wondering if eventual understanding of the technology would shift his opinion. Not regarding quick gains/ losses, it would be great to hear Dave's opinion on the ability to send money to anyone, for anything, anywhere in the world- almost instantaneously. (Several cryptos can even do so more efficiently and more privately than Bitcoin.) I'm not suggesting he should begin promoting crypto as an investment but would enjoy hearing intellectual discord on actual facts of the tech, and the implications of blockchain technology moving forward.

    Since I was young, I have never taken on debt and saved religiously and I told to myself if I ever see an opportunity I will stop being cheap. I have read and researched bitcoin and decided to put 15% of my savings in it in February 2016. I have had many many rough days but did not sell. And it was the best and luckiest thing I have ever done.
    But If I were to take on debt and not save I would never have bought any. People ask you "are you gonna get rich by not drinking starbucks?" well it is not about getting rich but yes.

    In my opinion if you have decent investments, 5 or so percent of your investment money in crypto is fine, so long as it's money you assume you've already lost. If it goes to 0, you were banking on your other investments, If it continues to moon rocket, you could be much richer than you bargained for. 1% to play it safe, 5% for most people, 10% tops, imo. And never let anyone else hold your coin, use your own private wallet, preferably hardware.

Didn't expect Dave to change his tune about Bitcoin as much as he has, but that's part of the reason why I watch him. Do your research. Don't be those people I see on my Facebook page buying Litecoin because it's the cheapest or buying Bitcoin through debt. Do. Your. Research.

    Poker is a very complex game, which should not be categorized under roulette and blackjack.
    When someone puts in the work to study and build a very strong strategy to beat their opponents, it becomes like a game of chess, with a 20 to 30% luck factor. If I play you 1on1 for 1,000,000 hands. You will think you have the worst luck in the world. The truth is your strategy is weaker and that's where the edge comes in poker. It's a beautiful game. Extremely competitive and very fun as well. 😎♣

    The comment sections on anything related to BTC recently is bananas. If you are long BTC great but don’t be so ignorant to bash and call skeptics idiots. They have a lot of good reason to be skeptical. Bubbles have really specific identifiers and warning signs many of which BTC might fit the bill for.
    Some of the signs:
    1) Extreme future valuations. I have seen some expecting BTC to rise to 50,000 next year. That would represent a 150% profit in one year after the 1000% increase this year. No assets in history have rose that much so quickly without some massive pullback or collapse.
    2) Not all, but many are using an absurd amount of leverage or selling off cars and other possessions to buy BTC. This is not only stupidly risky but it also inflates the price way beyond what the asset is actually worth.
    3) Retail investors flocking to an asset can be a sign of a bubble. Look at the dot com bubble when all of a sudden everyone was day trading internet stocks. Or 2008 when everyone was quitting jobs to become a mortgage broker. Just this week I have had two people tell me all the money they are making day trading BTC and other cryptos.
    4) An increase in fraud. There are over 2,000 alt coins. In an industry with no regulation this is scary. Many are likely just pump and dump schemes. There is also a strong possible that these alt coins and some of the sketchier exchanges are taking money that is supposed to be set aside for customer withdrawals and putting it into BTC only further inflating the price of BTC.(Obviously this last one is impossible to prove but it is my suspicion)
    Personally I think that block chain technology is going to be revolutionary in the way we exchange value. I’m just not sure BTC is the one though. Again, if you are long BTC in a responsible manner with a diversified portfolio great. Just don’t bet the house on BTC and call us skeptics stupid.
    *also if you read this whole rant good for you

It's gone up at least 5 times its value since he's been steering people away from it. So now rather than admitting he just couldn't recommend it because he couldn't call it he's going on about Proverbs. Come on! In my wildest dreams I couldn't have called this crypto rally either. But don't make excuses and keep trying to justify your original position as being right all along because of some scripture written thousands of years ago. Just say you were wrong but that you couldn't recommend because at the time you couldn't call it.

    I'd guess the bigger, broader investment opportunity will be in blockchain, decentralized fault-tolerant ledgers, and any companies that can development them. And on a related note: blockchain developer jobs are popping up this quarter with very attractive salaries.
