    The difference between the NES and SNES is just monumental. I been playing alot of NES games lately well they are charming and probably one of my favorite games of all time being Cystalis, it actually lacked the memory to actually tell stories so for the SNES to actually tell a full epic plot with deep characterization and even allow text strings to be larger in the code so you can have full words as opposed to abreviations, is a testament to just how much of an evolutionary leap the SNES was from the previous hardware. I mean if you think about it, games like FF VI and Chrono Trigger hold uptoday for some of the most ground breaking and inventive rpg stories and they were only on that 16-bit hardware.

      @EugeneKurlikin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said 👏

    • @akualung
      @akualung ปีที่แล้ว

      To be true, Lagrange Point, Jubei Quest or Madara were some nes games which tried pretty hard to tell a more or less convoluted story (they obviously didn't manage to reach the level of depth of some snes rpgs, but the effort was laudable).

    • @deatho0ne587
      @deatho0ne587 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would argue that DQ 3 and 4 had some decent stories.

    • @Artimes.
      @Artimes. ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@akualung Yep, I have Jubei quest on my channel, havn't gotten to Lagrange point yet but I have played some of it. Though that game was late in the NES life cycle so they had the added capability of a graphics chip to enhance the graphics. Even though, when you compare NES to SNES. The Super Famicom was really your first foray into representing rpgs as a visual story telling medium almost in a cinamatic way, even before we had cinamatics, the ability to express writing and to tell an epic akin to like films and regular tv through the use of 16-bit pixels was just amazing and took alot of imagination and creativity. These things were just not possible on the NES and when you think about the history of gaming, that is quite the significant leap. I used to think that the PS1 was the Peak of story telling and scale in jrpgs, well that maybe true to some extent, the NES to the next generation was by far the largest innovation of story telling in video games.

    • @Artimes.
      @Artimes. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@deatho0ne587 In the nes era you really had to kind of conceptualize a story through a summary and ending and a few little excerpts of writing in between to get get the gist of the plot as you go on this sprawling adventure, well that is interesting and does give you an idea about the theme and plot of the game, it wasn't until the SNES gen where we could actually expand upon it, use exposition and tell a narative by using certain set pieces and scenes in a game which of course felt far more expressive and cinematic in a way. Don't get me wrong though, I am in no way criticizing the nes, it has its achievements along the evolution of gaming. Probably more notable for introducing actual worlds to the gaming tapestry, before that, everything derived from arcade cabinets so the NES is equally as important to ushering in gamers to playing through gorgeous life like worlds and levels, but specifically of the RPG genre, the SNES really evolved the genre far beyond anything anyone could imagine and that is probably why it’s one of the most groundbreaking console generations in alot of rpg fans eyes.

      I especially love the PSP version, it took a decent game and made it even better with how much extra polish was added. If anyone's gonna play FF4, play the PSP version, it's the definitive experience. Even has all the extra content and sequels in one package, so you can experience everything the FF4 saga had to offer in one playthrough. The SNES one isn't the best one to play anymore, since it cut features that were restored in later versions (starting from the PS1 version), like Cecil's Darkness ability and more.

      I kind of go back and forth on this. I think this and others like it (Star Ocean namely) are more or less still turn based, just an evolution of the active time system.
      You're still time limited in the amount of actions you can take. What's more is there is not a lot of room for technical skill to improve your play imo.
      In essence, it's an effective trick to take typically JRPG battles and remove the "stops" so to speak, but you're still taking turns.

    Personally I'd put breath of fire 2 on here but i understand that some people dont think its that good. One of the biggest problems was the translation for two games that had a few reason's why that was. I know you said traditional turn based but i have to bring but ogre battle 5 march if the black queen as a 10/10 game. For sll the remakes they made for tactics ogre they need to remake the ogre battle games.

      I think FF Tactics is up next for a remake.. It would def make sense because then we’ll have the SE holy grail trinity of SRPGs on modern platforms.. I never played the other Ogre titles but I’d think a compilation of them would be nice so those uninitiated can dip our feet into them..
      As far as Breath of Fire I’m a little torn in which of the first four to focus on first.. Should I start from the beginning or go in reverse? I’m on vacation now and i have a little more spare time to try out stuff I’m not as familiar with hahaha

    Out of my top 5 RPGs, the top 4 are for the SNES; this console was an absolute BEAST for the genre. My list in no particular order would be:
    Earthbound
    Final Fantasy 4
    Final Fantasy 5
    Final Fantasy 6
    Lennus 2
    Live-A-Live
    Lufia 2
    Mystic Ark (even wrote a walkthrough for this)
    Rudra no Hihou
    Shin Megami Tensei 2
    Super Mario RPG
    Also, if anyone's willing to help me out, I'd love to know what I'm missing with Wozz, because I really wanted to like it, but the very first area ends with a boss that has an insane amount of HP, and the only way to do significant damage was to have Chun use Telekinesis and just hope it comes out as Rock Toss, leaving the other party members useless, and even he's a roll of the dice. I don't remember how far I got, but it seemed like most boss fights were like that. Is there some obvious trick or strategy that I missed?

      Well I agree Famicom was better, so that doesn’t hold it back from 10/10 then.. because a LOT of games on this list are FanTranslated too bc they were 🇯🇵 JP only.
      Using Weapons as items though even made Rydia a powerhouse early on w/ Rod 🪄 while saving MP..

    1:50 I’m the total opposite. I loved FF6 the first time I played it and wasn’t overly impressed with FF4. When I found out the USA SNES version was dumbed down and I bought a PSP just so I could play FF4 complete, the game grew on me. I even enjoyed The After Years.
    Conversely, FF6 to me is just so depressing now that I never feel like going back to it. The system where each character has some weird way to play them (like type in button combos) seems interesting, but in practice it is frustrating and not fun at all. The game is full of bugs and stuff that doesn’t work right too, which I rarely ever see mentioned anywhere. I personally can’t say it’s a 10/10 game.

    Fight you? OK! Peach and Mallow are actually involved in the weakest party setups because items exist :P You get the most bang for your buck with Mario, Geno, and Bowser :P (Actually Super Mario RPG has one of the best party make ups of all time, the only sad thing being you can't take Mario out of the party at all. Everyone's actually fantastic because the game has great balance with regards to party member pros/cons).

    Final Fantasy VI
    Lufia 2
    Dragon Quest V
    Fire Emblem: Genealogy of The Holy War

    Wow. I've played almost all turn based rpg's, NEVER heard of Wozz. Going to be playing it now. It's wild I've never heard of or seen ANYTHING related to this game and I'm almost 37.... Haven't heard of 6 or 7 either... Might not play 6 because only 2 of TWELVE were translated, but 7 I'll likely play. Wild. AND 10. lol btw when I was searching, the part of the video is labeled as The Magical Land of Laws. Also Treasure of the Ruras.

    Most of those games never released in the states would be wonderful additions to the switch snes library. I mean the fans have done most of the work by translating them.

    Thanks for this list! I've been playing SNES game and fan translations for the last 20+years, and i can't believe there was THREE game from your list i never tried or heard before.
    - Magical Land of Wozz
    - Far East of Eden Zero
    - G.O.D.
    I definitely need to try theses games now! Glad to see Treasure of the Rudras here too. Not my favorite RPG but... what a GREAT game! I loved the sountrack where each characters has their own music theme which is rearranged for battles/boss fight/overworld. Loved the magic creation system too, sad i know no other game that use a similar mechanics.
    Thanks for your video!!

    I actually preferred the original Lufia to the overly laborious sequel. Could be I just didn't play it at the right time, though.
    I haven't played any of the JP-only games in here, although they all interest me. I need official releases these days, can't be bothered with torrents and modding. I just recently modded TitS SC with the EVO upgrades, and ugh, what a pain. Took a couple hours of research and hunting and still isn't working 100%. "Ain't nobody got time for that."

    Happy Sunday David! I played TONS of rpgs on SNES back in the day. I didn't get into the DQ series until DQ8, but I would love to go back and play the older ones on the SNES/PS1.
    (I have no idea why/how DQ eluded me for so long. Maybe I was too deep into FF.) Anyway, thanks for another banger David, and have a blessed day everyone.

      Honestly, if you're going to go back and play older DQ games, I have to humbly recommend adding DQIV to your list (even though all versions of it have their own... issues... it remains a phenomenal game, and for it's time, was leaps and bounds ahead of the curve).

    Chrono Trigger is my favorite on the snes, coming close in second place is FF6 and Tales of Phantasia.
    Sure, ToP got a ps1 remake, but I just think it looks too anime/cartoony to my taste, SPECIALLY with battle backgrounds and music (snes version even had surround sound, but the ps1 didn't).
    FF5 is awesome as is FF4, but I'd avice playing the remakes of the later.
    Seiken Densetsu 3 is a favorite of mine, probably the best looking 16bit RPG ever (it also has surround sound!).
    Mario RPG, awesome.
    Lufia 2 I also love, not only because of the puzzles, but because of the SOUNDTRACK, omg, I cannot stress enough how good the OST is in this game, easily the best of the snes. Every single piece of music writen for this game is a banger!

    Great list, so many great games that aged well. Chrono Trigger stands apart in excellence.
    P.S. : I really liked Lufia II, and liked Lufia 1 too, but the Prequel is such an improvement in every way.

  • @TheAllMightyJoe
    @TheAllMightyJoe ปีที่แล้ว

    Seiken Densetsu 3 is easily one of the best games for SNES. It has the MOST REPLAY value of just about any non-roguelike game. There are 6 charters to start as and 2 other side characters to have join you. The story will even chance even if you choose the same 3 characters depending on which is the main character. Then there are 4 different classes each character can be. So to do the math 6 main characters time 10 possible combinations times 4 classes for 3 chosen characters. Or (6X10)X(4^3) = (60) X (64) = 3,480 different ways to play the game. All that in 32mb.

    Really need to try Earthbound since I have gotten older. I hated it back then since I thought it was so cringe and even 10 years ago I thought it was cringe.
    I think I would give
    - FFIV - Due to when it came out.
    - DQVI (jp) - I actually like it better than V and not taking anything away from V though
    - Bahamut Lagoon (jp only) - Almost looked like 2dhd back then without the chip
    - Orge Battle - Multiple endings and a different form of Tactics RPG which is quite rare and good
    - Tactics Orge (jp) - The one that should get all the fame for the best Tactics game of all time, since FFT (still loved it, but ...) is just a slightly watered-down version

  • @Dhalin

    I don't know if FF6 and Chrono Trigger belong on this, because you said "turn-based". They're not really turn-based as the battles play out in real time whether you take your turn or not. A nitpick, I know, but still. Don't get me wrong, they are among my favorites. Now, we could take them out and replace them with two of my favorites: Lufia 1 and 7th Saga, two games that ARE actually turn-based. Well..... Lufia 1 skirts the edge of "turn-based". It uses what is essentially an ATB system, only you don't see the gauges, and the battle pauses while it waits for your input.

    I know it's an remake from the NES game. But I think Dragon Quest 3 deserves to be part of this list. Not only is it an big improvement from the original, but I would put it up there with Dragon Quest 5, Final Fantasy 4-6 & Chrono Trigger as some of the best RPG games on SNES. And if u do best RPG'S for Game Boy or Game Boy Color and mobile versions, than it should be up there too.

    You left out DQ6 which was much better on Super Famicom (SNES) than its DS remake. Also the first remake of DQ3 had better quality than even the recent remakes, like on Switch. I truly hope that the announced HD2D version brings back the extra stuffs from the SNES and the GBC version.

  • @roguerifter9724

    I love the SNES but I think the early Playstations were better RPG platforms. Especially if you count re-releases, or even just games released in the US for the first time on the PS1. Factor in the PS2 backwards compatibility and I don't think its beatable..
    Of my five favorite Final Fantasy games one was created for the SNES but two were created for the PS1 and both the pre-PS1 games in the top five were released for the PS1, with one of them not coming to the US until the PS1 release. And the last of the five was created for the PS2 meaning I could, and did play all five on the PS2. (I never actually owned a PS1 jumping from my SNES to the PS2 but I got tons of PS1 games for it)
    Ogre Battle, aka my favorite console SRPG, was an SNES game but it and its sequel/spinoff Tactics Ogre were also on the PS1 ,and the latter didn't come to the US until the PS1. In fact as much as I love Ogre Battle the SRPG selection for the North American SNES was horrible with both the PS1 and PS2 crushing it with ease IMO.
    And Suikoden one of my favorite Turn based RPG series started on the PS1 with all five main series games playable on the PS2

    Final Fantasy 4 and 7 might have the better stories and/or transgressions but as far as ingenuity FF6 set the bar. Also I feel like the advertisement for Earthbound was so unfair because it turned me off from wanting to play the game at the time which I regret.

    As far as classic systems it may be a tie between SNES & PSX.. You can find so many quality titles.. Just today I played Vagrant Story for the first time.. I know there’s a lot of forgotten gems on PSX so I can imagine how many there’s also for snes.. I’m only sorry the extent of my rpg knowledge way back when only went as far as Zelda.. I know nowadays it’s not regarded in that family by various sources but not back then from what I recall..
    As far as the Mana series I guess the one called Secret of Mana is the most highly regarded arpg I know of.. I never owned the SNES Chrono sadly.. That said I knew i would have loved it if I discovered it sooner before getting it on ps1.. I assumed via the name it was a bullet hell shooter when coming across it in mags.. Never judge a game by its name I suppose lol
    They really should bring back FF VI in Hd 2d next because it would be a great ode to the fans

    Though you called it the best rpg sequel to the worst rpg, i have nostalgia bias to Lufia 1 since its the 3rd rpg i ever played just behind FF4 and FFMQ (yes mystic quest was my first rpg lol). Encounter rate was stupidly high, saves were few and far in between, scripted boss battles were sudden and unforgiven as hell... that said, it introduced me to a lot of things that i didnt see if the previous games i played. I did end up beating it as a kid and it did get me curious about maxim and his crew since the story of it takes place after Lufia II.
    Sadly i only got to play Lufia II much later on. I was able to rent it out from a store but it just didn't work, my dad who did game repairs at the time opened it and the board was scratched all to hell like someone had taken a knife to it.

    You gotta try ff6 romhack, the one that change so much things! The best thing is to buy your magic spells with the points instead of learning it by having the esper equipped. And this one, what is the most fun, nobody can wear every esper. So everyone has only some magic available so it really change the gameplay and the team you will need to do later. Also everything is more balance, shielding % has been rework etc. A lot of things but i really enjoy to do ff6 this way. Ff6 brave new world!
