Love your projects CT, there’s nothing there that you can’t deal with and now that you have the knowledge of the other three I’m sure you will make a good usable 914 out of this one. You can do it!
I've been trying to put my finger on why I like watching your videos so much. Today, it hit me - you're like the Bob Ross of car restoration. Soft spoken and a positive attitude.
I had a ‘76 exactly like this in the early 80’s. Same red color, same wheels, 2.0l. Had factory A/C that I never used and the optional center console. These wheels definitely came original and need the plastic chrome caps. Took all my money in high school and a lot of work removing rust in the rear boot. These were practically disposable cars! Mine was in CA and was already starting to rust.
I’m bringing home my 914 project tomorrow and thought to myself, CT did one of these last year or so. I’m glad I went back and am able to rewatch these. I love all of the help you are leaving here on TH-cam. Let the fun begin!
Thank you! I try to keep it real and honest. I like to make videos that I would want to watch if I was restoring a car. There are a lot of details to show.
Love 914’s! I’ve owned five of these since the mid 1970’s. My current one is a 76 two owner with 79,000 miles on it been stored inside all its life not a single bit of rust anywhere and trust me that’s saying something. So much fun!
More bug videos coming don't worry! =) I'm ordering parts for it this week. Headliner, window rubber, trim, glass and a few other things. Should have another bug video next week.
So grateful you're doing this. LOVE the 914 and seeing you tackle rust issues, etc, will be an awesome learning exp. I'd love to pick one of these up and know what it will take to get it to the level I want it to be at...
The black box at the front of the passenger footwell is the service interval counter for the EGR valve and catalytic converter service/replacement mileage.
On those speaker grilles..the 4 hold the speaker in grille area..you remove the outside screws to pull the whole thing out...leave the speaker screws on...😝
That little Porsche box in the floorpan is probably to change the gearing for the speedo and odomoter from kmh to mph. Looks like its a cable from the gearbox that rotates to turn the gauges
I’m happy to see 914s being recognized these days. they damn-sure have been in the shadows for many, many moons. I bought a ‘75 2.0L 914 in ‘93 as a 14yr old. the problem that took it off the road a dozen years before was a break in the circuitry of the ECU (fuel injection) that was fixed with one drop of solder. I bought 10ft of great German fuel line, tires, gasoline, oil, brake fluid & a battery. it was painted the same year & has still to this day Never Left Me Stranded. I drove it in daily for a year, then switched between the 914 & and 4x4 S-10 Blazer. a 914 is an incredible little auto that you either love, hate or haven’t seen yet. I still want to give mine the horsepower that I feel it deserves. I’m considering a multi-rotor Mazda swap, built up booster Subaru swap, 2J Nissan (I have two), or a 6 cylinder Porsche engine. I have a ‘75 2.8L from my ‘75 Carrera S that ran before I pulled it to swap in a G50 & 3.2L PCA-Spec built bomber. so, I have options, but cannot pull the trigger to take off in any specific direction. when you see a dude lapping traffic in a 914 around Watkin’s Glenn, Road Atlanta, etc. on Porsche Club track days, you are seeing what the 914 was originally drawn to do. the 908 was an amazing racer & it’s street legal cousin can rip corners as well.
Thanks Greg! Yes, I sold them off so I could focus on the 65 beetle. Seeing them there and having to move them around everyday to make room was weighing on me. It wasn't easy letting them go but it felt good once I did and the extra cash helped out too. That being said it feels great to have found another one just down the road and for a good price. Any updates on the Porsche restoration?
I'm learning a ton from watching you poke around your car. I have a '74 that I have owned for about 20 years, stored in a barn, waiting for my retirement to work on it. Problem is much of it is in pieces with some evidently missing. Good news is that it has far less rust than your red one. The longitudinals, being essentially square tubes, are water traps. The "Hell hole(s)" are nearly always bad on these cars. Gonna enjoy watching and learning!!
Is that black insulation tape factory...? Ha, ha, we don't think so... Sorry, I couldn't help it. This was utterly brilliant to watch. Fantastic stuff. I was right there with you!
Hello CT, I have one of these that I am going to start restoring soon. I am starting my TH-cam channel with the build of a 1928 Morgan Aero RIP GN special. I do not know what I am calling my channel yet though..lol I love your videos and you are my inspiration. Oh and Glenn said to say hello and he has not talked to you for a while. That was a couple months ago that he said that. So drop if you have talked to Duck man then ignore this. Otherwise he says hi and wants make sure you are ok...lol
WOW! This will be my favorite. Because my very first car when I was young here in Germany, was a 914 2.0 . I still think of buying a restored one to bring back the memories 😀
Hey mate, nice to see you're keeping busy! The box you found in the footwell is a 'CAT & EGR counter switch', whatever the hell that is, and is no longer available new! I just googled the numbers on the front. Good luck. Julian.
I *Almost* bought this car thinking it would be a better base for my project while the one I have now could be a donor since the cabin is rusted out. I'm now very glad I didn't. but very glad you did so I could watch someone else suffer alongside me in real time.
@@CTmoog mine is a Blue 1975 model. It's rear end and Front end is almost perfect.... It's cabin and passenger outer longitudinal is rusted out however due to a shattered windshield. I bought it to do Lemons. But kinda fell in love with it. So have decided the long term goal is to Restomod it. Given its pretty rough shape I don't feel too bad about cutting her up to customize 😂
Sounds like you've done the floor pans before. The inner firewall is a little tough but you'll be glad you replaced it. That passenger side outer long will be the most challenging as you'll probably need to replace the hinge plate, sill and sill supports (triangles). Add the two side jack plates and all four lift points... three months cutting, welding and grinding if you've got a day job. Good luck and have fun!
That is in great shape compared to the ones I see up here in PA. Considering they do not have any rust protection....I suppose the fact that they are still here in recognizable shape is probably a win.....A Big W!!!! I want to come back down so bad but I have family here and I can't leave them.
Hey CT 'porsche 914 641 13 10 cat reactor' is part of the US emission cotrol for cars of those year. This box is controllong the EGR valve, however it looks like this control is disabled ;-)
I know you know but I thought you would comment about the heater tubes in the rockers. Very much not compatible with welding! Yes I have got 2 more episodes to check what happens. I hope all goes well. I'm a fan of the 914. Not many here in the UK.
You were right. No 4 cylinder 914 sold in the US came with carbs. All F.I.. Also that oval ring behind the passenger seat is a Tow Hook, it screws into a hole in the front or rear bumper. The threads are broken off on your example. There are decent seat covers sold that look pretty good. IGGEE or Wet Okole. Nice complete car.
If the price was okay you have to take it CT . And close to your home 👍 It's gone be a great one , I have no doubt ! Your're the man with the golden hands 👍 I like this model , I always wanted to buy one , but then I was hooked by my car .
The rust is keeping the metal together so you might want to start bracing every corner of the car you can reach with the welder. How many of those cars do you have by now ?
It's a bit of a hobby horse of mine but WD-40 is NOT a lubricant or really not much use for loosening up rusty fasteners. In the USA PB Blaster or Kroil will do the job much better.
914s have death-foam too? Dang. Huh, I think that's a 'carbon-fiber' patch rather than fiberglass. Not a bad point to start from, got some decent bones to it!
