I know the markings, but I dont know the 'why' for the marking. Why is there a break line? What's it for? I understand the staggered start for un lane races, but never understood the breaklines
I know this comment is old but I will just answer your question. Break line if for some races (most commonly the 800) that require a lane start but don’t require runners to stay in their lanes the whole race. If the 800 is ran in lanes but then has a cut (meaning all runners move to lane 1) in then the break line is used to make sure everyone is running the same distance. The runners who ran farther on the curve because they are in outside lanes can cut in sooner than the runners in the inside lanes.
