Subscribing to your TH-cam channel is still one of the major highlight of my 2021.. you’re so full of wisdom. The one lesson I’ve gotten from you is not dwelling so much on perfection or what people will think, just sharing your craft & document your journey.
What Ali taught me in 2021: Even with great success in business or my career, the questions of who I am and how I want to live my life will still remain if I don't work on answering them.
About number 20: sometimes what you do and who you are are the same thing! Take generosity, for example: you "are" generous" because you act generously. Everything is an action. When you decide to hug someone after an argument to make things better and not leave the tension fester, you are "being" a kind person because you're acting kindly. Giving that hug is the thing that you're doing. So don't beat yourself up if you can't separate those two things. You are great because you do great things! It's just a matter of recognizing that small things are also great, like the hug example. It's not just about "big" things like winning an oscar or something like that.
You’re honestly such an inspiration. You spew out all this sensible and useful information all the time. I find myself telling my work colleagues or my ex-husband “well, Ali Abdaal says”. My ex is like “who is this Ali Abdaal” 😂😂 But my colleagues have looked at your videos after my recommendation and they have also been inspired by you. So keep it up 👍 👏🏽
Listening to Ali is itself Motivating-like honestly, Ali is from those Small Section of People who can kill off my Saturation and Burn Out within Seconds and Boost Me Up(Also, great work by the Editor for this great effect that he made here 2:41-this is not that much hard, but not all mind doing; and this just makes the Experience just BETTER)
FWIW, I don't think you are less cool because you are no longer a doctor. In fact, I find it admirable that you worked hard and explored life enough to find something else you enjoy doing and moved on. All of us have to decide who we want to be and what major we want to pursue at college in our late 10s without even knowing who we are and what the real world is like. Some people like what they chose, some people don't and choose to stay, and some explore something else and pivot. And pivoting is hard and takes courage, and you did it rather than staying as doctor you no longer felt passionate for. So kudos to you!
We die and leave *nothing* physical behind, the only thing we can hope to properly continue are the advancements we make to *technology* , *science* and better ways of *thinking* . Have a great day!
Thank you Ali for inspiring me to make simple-form content without too much editing, with me just being myself. Your videos are awesome. Thank you for being you
Definitely vibe with lesson 20. I think a lot of people that were “traditional successful” at a young age can share this experience. Convincing myself of my own intrinsic self worth is something I try to think about and work towards as much as possible. As of now, it’s still more like a piece of knowledge that I know, rather than a concept that I understand experientially. Good luck with your own journey! Looking forward to hearing about it in a future video :)
Ali i can confirm that i have never watched any of your videos without gaining at least 1 very important and inspiring information ! please keep going and keep inspiring us we need more people like you
Lesson No. 20 : Your natural humility shines through all these videos and even if you were not doing what you are doing, people would love you for that.
Honestly Ali abdaal you have changed the way i think about life and how I do things, thank you for all you did for me since I started watching your channel and I have drastically improved thanks to you, hope to see more of what you do in 2022
#20 & 21 - YES!!! All I know of you is what you share on TH-cam AND you are intrinsically worthy of love, yours and from others, just because you are a breathing human being. I appreciate your shout-out to stoicism, AND much of what you share can be traced back to early Buddhist teachings.
I literally was having a crisis over lesson 20, yesterday. Kept on thinking Im not worthy for the friends I have and I should change myself to be more likeable but having you explain a better more healthy way through it made me realize that I might have beating myself up too much.
Reading was never my cup of tea but I really enjoy your book recommendations so much that I did buy some of those books and read. Overtime, I grow to like this cup of tea and spend more time sipping each one without feeling forced. Thank you for producing such great videos that have a positive impact on my life. HNY, Ali!
Ali dude you got me with number 20. First of all I enjoy your content and I really appreciate your courage to be vulnerable. I am raising a kid and I see how my approval of her (new) ability to read, or her jokes, or her style of clothing etc. makes this connection in her mind that she is good and important and lovable for those things. I try to balance it with showing love for no reason. But it’s hard to know what the long term impact of anything you do or say as a parent will be. I don’t even know why I’m saying this to you. I guess I’m trying to say that we learn that we’re valuable for what we do from the most well meaning people in our lives sometimes. The one thing I remind myself and what I often say to my kid is that we were most dearly loved and cared for before we could do things. It helps me to connect with my intrinsic value. Anyway bye.
Ali talking about self love is so sweet. Listening to him self doubt, stuttering is the cutest. Reminds us that despite him looking and sounding all perfect in videos, he’s a real person. And he does go through highs and lows like us ❤️
I started this year with 3 things. A distinct idea that this has to be my last year working as a doctor. Taking a break and really thinking about my decision and… starting a website. Well.. baby website as I still learn what and where and how. And now i discovered your channel! Cool!
Favorites: Question assumptions, Forget the noun, and Infinite Games (I love Simon Sinek's book on this). Thanks for always sharing and introducing new ideas on your channel Ali.
People have no idea how precious these lessons are, i shall always be grateful i got exposed to ali's videos, they have changed me as a person, made my med school far more enjoyable, and improved my vision for life.
Thanks for sharing all the lessons. I love the analogy of the chips whenever I feel like prostrating and low in motivation, I would spring up and start working and tell myself like what you did. "Where should I place that chip in my hour?". "Being more intentional with using my own time".
Hey therapist speaking here. Concerning lesson #20 (love yourself for who you simply are, not for what you do). It's not hippie or "woo-woo" at all. People say this when they talk about anything that's deep or connected to human experience. I love and admire the vulnerability for saying this in front of million of people, because this is exactly the type of conversation that you'd hear in a therapy office. That lesson you mentioned is something that I see in a lot of overachievers, very successful people. For anyone reading this, remember that you are human BEING, not a human DOING. -Sending you love from Montreal, Kanica.
I love this! Especially 24:20 onwards, thank you so much for sharing this! Helped me realize a lot and I'm sure it helped a large majority of those that watched too
hi, I appreciate all of your efforts in making videos and I feel especially happy when I see there are people who are still venturing their life and is also sharing knowledge at the same time on this platform. kudos to you! keep uploading !!
I think Sheen’s point of loving yourself for who you are than what you do is very true. It actually relates to the embrace the suck imo. If you don’t see your work as a reflection of yourself you won’t be so worried about how it looks at the start. You know it has nothing to do with your worth.
Hey Ali, quick question. How does a generalist find their passion/drive? Some people are naturally drawn to things and others aren’t. How do those don’t gravitate to certain things find their passion? If you are a generalist you should make a video on it! Thanks and keep up the good content
Loved lesson 20! You exist on this earth along with everyone else. When I am feeling depressed and like I am always in the way just by existing, I have to remind myself that no, I'm allowed to take up space just like everyone else here on this earth. Love it.
Always good to hear your reflections on what you have learned from the year. I particularly liked the keep things scrappy lesson, more entrepreneurial and learning on the journey. Being a bit of a perfectionist myself that is helpful to hear.
The fact that you recommend books that aren't mainstream is the reason I look forward to your videos on the subject. Not only do I find great book recommendations, but I also catch a break from 'The Psychology of Money' and 'Atomic Habits' recommendations. Thanks Ali!
😊Hey Ali! I’m Chinese 🇨🇳 and I watch all your videos! I’m so excited to know you are learning Chinese! You inspired me to take that final step to become a TH-camr! By the way, When are you coming to Beijing? Haha I’m sure you will love it. Thanks for this video. It’s quite inspiring! ❤️
No I get lesson 20 so much, I realised I had this issue that I thought I wasn’t enough because I wasn’t doing enough. And I realised, my friends and family would often ask me when they saw me, “what did you do today?” Or “What have you been up to recently?” And I realised that my answers would always sound bad, like, “oh I read some more of my book, I don’t know, I had lunch” and maybe occasionally could say I went for a walk. There was this pressure that I was putting on myself from these questions and so I told people to stop asking me what I did today, but how I was and how I felt today instead. Game changing.
I totally get Lesson 20. I found that I tend to accept and love others easily, but I do not apply it to myself. I have way higher expectations of myself than I have for other people. This could be good, to an extent, but I often get it wrong...
Wow, I have been asking a ton of people in my life these questions, they say they dont know. I click on this video and am hit with so many things I have wanting to get a take on. Thank you so much.
What a phenomenal video, there's more value and information here than I can even process. Your journey is pretty amazing. Gosh these videos feel like all these little men in my brain processing my thinking, just you've verbalized. Great video, keep it up
Financial investment can be emotionally exhausting/frustrating in a case where inconsistency in trade wins is much. Positive results are guaranteed more if one works with a reliable professional. My most sincere take though!! Grateful to Jane Marie Kunak
Hey Ali I have just found your channel in the last few weeks and wanted to say it is certainly one of the better channels I've watched. Def don't come across many gems in these modern TH-cam times but yours is one of them! You have a great mix of content and present the information very well.
Life advice is definitely personal - There are amazing platitudes that contradict each other. The important part of taking advice, is knowing YOURSELF (even when it's uncomfortable) because what brings an insecure person into confidence makes a confident person arrogant.
I definitely agree with the Quitting part, that way we do not have so much on our table and we can focus on things which actually matters. Thank you Ali for another great video.
Hi Ali. Phenomenal material you covered in this vid. Thanks bro! So, to touch on #20 on the subject of intrinsic value vs extrinsic value. Over time I've come to learn that majority of this self evaluation is learned from childhood from caretakers/parents/gaurdians majorly. It is also something my group of friends in Uni who were all foreigners from Asia, India and Africa struggled with. We came to the conclusion that non-western caregivers are way more likely to teach their own children that extrinsic values are what quality them for love, respect and affection. A few extrinsic beliefs we learn about are grades in school, obedience at home, being helpful around the house, and alot more. We also learn socially based on how the adults in our lives talk about others. When parents/caregivers talk smack about a child, we don't want the same reputation so we avoid that habit the said child is being criticised for. Sometimes, the trait being criticised is either: "So and so is just too quiet and seem pretty dumb" OR "So and so is so loud and talkative which is so annoying". Sometimes the quiet child is an introvert and the "loud" child just knows how to speak their mind against wrong being done. Ali... Point is, you are not alone. There are millions who struggle with the same struggle accepting that you are loved, valued and respected just because you exist. Sheen is awesome for walking that journey of unlearning with you. Thank you Ali for this awesome video
24:07 I've recently realized I have done that for the longest time. Based my value in a friend's life on the basis of what I can do for them rather than for just being myself. Obviously, that is not the standards I set for my friends. Through self reflection I realized that it stems from when I was in high school. I've had "friends" gravitate towards me for what I could do as a head girl or just for being popular in school. I had misconstrued their idea of my self-worth as my own. This is also why I chase the next success, and the next. Because nothing brings a sense of satisfaction, not truly. I've recognized my problem. But have I been able to get through it? Still a work in progress.
I like your channel is because you share your thought with us (I like them) is not because of how many tips or techniques in the video. Happy new year all the best in 2022
I can relate to #20... and I think it's easy to have that mindset because people give praises for what you do rather than for being yourself. Whether you are a high achiever in school, make great videos, etc. -- those achievements/skills get more attention than just existing and being you.
Yeah I definatelly vibe with you Ali on the notion that I feel self worth only based on what I do, instead of who I am. And yeah it is probably worth it to work on it. Thanks for pointing it out :)
I love grabbing a tea for these videos. The amount of value you provide these days is crazy I genuinely aspire to make my videos as much like yours as possible
My book wish-list always doubles in size when watching an Ali Abdaal video! Thanks Ali, great video as always!! :))

I love life lesson videos. They're the best!
Mulțumim!
Thx Ali, you are my favorite person on youtube from now on . You are pretty dame honest .
Great video, keep it up
This really hits hard man! I can totally relate. 2022 is still gonna be a year of a lot of learnings and realizations.
Love your book recommendations Ali
Thank you for sharing your Self-Love challenges! They resonate very deeply with me. We’ll get there one day ❤️

Ali - This was much needed for me today.
This is by far one of the best videos I have EVER watched.
Excellent video as always!

I really enjoyed this video, Thanks for being a source of inspiration Ali. Love from Nigeria
Financial investment can be emotionally exhausting/frustrating in a case where inconsistency in trade wins is much. Positive results are guaranteed more if one works with a reliable professional. My most sincere take though!! Grateful to Jane Marie Kunak
I did read about Jane Marie Kunak., quite an interesting lady to look up on the web.
Consistently investing in quality dividend paying companies over the long term is a relatively easy strategy to create generational wealth,
Awesome content, i have come across various recommendations. I must say this one stands out.
I googled the lady you mentioned, and after going through her credentials, I can tell she's a pro, I'll be writing her a mail shortly.
Loving myself for who I am instead of what I do. Loved that Ali. It is very important to realize that!
The important part of taking advice, is knowing YOURSELF (even when it's uncomfortable) because
what brings an insecure person into confidence makes a confident person arrogant.
I definitely agree with the Quitting part, that way we do not have so much on our table and we can focus on things which actually matters. Thank you Ali for another great video.
I love the background music. Coupled with the content in this video, I think its awesome. Keep up the good work Ali and the team.
Sometimes, the trait being criticised is either:
"So and so is just too quiet and seem pretty dumb"
OR
"So and so is so loud and talkative which is so annoying".
20s are for learning, 30s are for earning
Happy new year, Ali and team. Amazing as always 🍀 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone💐

Happy new year all the best in 2022
Discovered Ali about two weeks ago and i have been watching his videos every day ever since
I'm going to make a similar list to keep in my journal. Might even incorporate it into my vision board for 2022.
I can relate to #20... and I think it's easy to have that mindset because people give praises for what you do rather than for being yourself.
Whether you are a high achiever in school, make great videos, etc. -- those achievements/skills get more attention than just existing and being you.
This is a great help especially entering into a brand new year. Thank you!!
Yeah I definatelly vibe with you Ali on the notion that I feel self worth only based on what I do, instead of who I am. And yeah it is probably worth it to work on it. Thanks for pointing it out :)
This video is immensely valuable for personal development as well as as an aspiring entrepreneur, thank you!
I love grabbing a tea for these videos. The amount of value you provide these days is crazy I genuinely aspire to make my videos as much like yours as possible
