today’s music commentary is all about taylor swifts fued with big machine records, including little side tidbits exploring scooter braun’s career, and discussing what happened with kanye and or bieber. i also discuss some stuff regarding today’s music industry and how we’re seeing a change in artist rights over their work.
this is a tricky situation since most of it is “supposedly,” as the entire fued was by word of mouth from both parties and we never really had solid confirmation as to who was actually right, but I obviously stand with taylor so this video is formatted in that way.

Yes! Every artist should be able to own their own masters, and Olivia's career is just starting.
I think the most missunderstood thing in this hole thing is that people seem to think that taylor just wanted her music back for free, like at no cost, that suddenly now she wants to change a 13 years old contract. She is of couse regreating that contract, but the main point its that she just wanted a fair shot at buying her masters back with her own money.

Beyond Scooter Braun's character, it's gross how Scott Bruschetta knew full well Taylor has felt bullied by him and his clients, and still sold it to Scooter. He basically stood by Taylor for 13 years, then betrayed her when she was no longer useful to him.
Because I’m such a Taylor stan and so active in the community, I often forget that not everybody knows all the ins and outs of this situation, so thank you for ghis video, Jasmine. With that being said, I think it speaks to Taylor’s influence and power that rerecordings of a nearly 13 year old album performed as well as they did in terms of sales and streaming, and I imagine the other rerecordings will do as well, if not better. Taylor is using the nearly 15 years worth of influence, power and fame to challenge the record industry and doing it in public so that everyone is aware of what’s going on, and I love her for it

I find it funny that Justin says how Taylor shouldn’t have gone to social media and yet his response was posted on social media instead of privately writing to Taylor. He wanted people to see him “being the bigger person.” What a joke. Your video was done well and extremely thorough. You definitely made it very easy to understand. It was a great video!
I find it weird how the media didn't go into an uproar when the full phone call between Kanye (👎🏼🤮) and Taylor was leaked because it was blown out of proportion when the few EDITED snippets were released by Plastic Kardashian. Taylor deserves an apology, just sayin..
Especially because recording phone calls like that is a crime in California. Kim and Kanye literally COMITTED A CRIME by recording and releasing it

Record companies seem to not understand that fan are more interested in music when artist are truly excited to make it. When musicians make music that they love it more from the heart and as a result, more meaningful.

with all the stuff he apparently had against ariana, i wouldn't be surprised if he manipulated her into hiring him back and she's now stuck in a contract or something, cause you can tell that ariana does not care about that man. justin and demi are constantly showing their support for him, meanwhile ariana doesn't do that at all, even when he bought Big Machine Records, she posted a story congratulating him and then deleted it not even an hour later (there's also an instagram story where she supported taylor but im pretty sure that's fake, but she did indeed delete the story congratulating scooter and she has shown love to taylor a few times after the whole drama).
If he was going to trick Taylor into signing and NDA, he absolutely did that to Ari. I bet even after she stops working with him she won't be allowed to talk about him.

One comment on people using the masters for publishing. Taylor owns the publishing and songwriting rights. So, she is the one that has to agree for her music to be used in ads/movies/tv/etc. That's why we haven't seen any of her music used in that way for years now. She has spoken about how she gets sync requests for shake it off like once a week.
Btw they would all get money through that, so that's why she hasn't. She made that fake cover band made up of her, her brother, and Jack antonoff for LWYMMD for killing eve I think so they wouldn't get money from it. She has the rights for covers, so she did it that way and it was smart as shit

You seem like a genuine fan but willing to be fair to the story which I love because it’s genuine. I really enjoyed the videos and hope you continue to do more. Since you study the music industry can you please do a video on chart manipulation and kind of the history of charting and how it has changed over the years with streaming. I’ve always tried to figure out how certain songs are number one or highly charting over other songs and it just feels like a foreign language. I also wouldn’t mind videos diving into scooter further (anything to expose his Intentions and how I firmly believe he cares nothing about the well being of his artists only sees them as money signs) Keep up the great content!

Hi Jasmine. Stuff like this has been happening for the longest time. So I commend Taylor for doing this. She's not the only person to be doing this, but she is a prime example of artists that take back their own stuff, and well, I totally respect her for it. I was three when she strayed out in 2005, and she made a portion of our soundtracks when we were kids. By that I mean me and my mates in elementary (primary school for us in the UK), and I would've at the time called it our guilty pleasure. Yeah, I'm dumb.
But yeah. The experience she went through is so common I can't even count in my head. If anyone remembers Buddy Holly, then you'd know what happened to him. Elvis too. In the UK it was Billy Fury and Tommy Steel, among others. Even now we still see it. We should be making our craft for ourselves primarily, as well as for others, and to see that artists don't often get their fair share of rewards sickens me. So I'm happy for Taylor. Do what she does, she's an amazing person and I will always respect her and her music.

The fact that Scooter could've solved this whole mess by just selling Taylor's catalogue back to her... same price and everything. He whined so much about being painted in a bad light, but literally didn't do the one (1) thing that would redeem him and save his reputation... shows his real character imo
Because it’s more profitable for him to keep them. Would make him consistent money, make his company worth more and give him more clout in the industry. It would be dumb business wise for him to sell it

Even if it's disgusting, Scooter is a powerful man in the industry of course people will be defend it that's why I'm not surprised Justin supported him it's his friend and manager. This story is important to understand how the industry is dominant and how capitalism (sexism, racism too) control artist career. Some artists are slavec because of their contracts like Jojo, Rihanna and many others sometimes fans have to understand that they aren't allowed to do things and sometimes, the public (i mean us) as the producers, medias etc are responsible by participating in artist's control.

I understood this at a surface level when it all broke. I think she should in part be able to own her own work, again i agree with your ending thoughts about balance between the artist and label. This video is so well done and informative.
i do have a question though, so when all of taylor’s 5 albums are re recorded - does that not mean that the recordings that scooter owns lose all their value and nobody will probably wanna use her songs in ads/ movies etc because they’ll want the newest form of the music??
then my next question after that is if that’s what’s gonna happen is it not just easier to give taylor back the rights ??
Yeah, they'll be devalued. But scooter sold them in a partnership with shamrock like a few months ago (times a concept I can't grasp these days, so it mightve been longer) so he'll be a partner and they even reached out to taylor but she publicly said no since he still would be there. She owns the publishing and sync rights to her music, so she has been denying use in ads/movies/TV for years now. She said she gets a sync request for shake it off like once a week lol
It is easier, but Scott and scooter are greedy. Scott could've easily sold her music back to her, but he offered a deal for her to win back each one with a new album in like ~10 years I think. Scooter has hated her for awhile, there's a rumor that he wanted to manage her, but she denied and he's been against her since. He did make up his money with shamrock, so he isn't losing anymore perse. And Scott sold the label to scooter so he isn't tanking as much since he now has support from him. OH and most importantly, they reached out again to sell them to her more recently, but she said no since she would've had to sign an NDA where she couldn't say anything negative about scooter

i was a HUGE fan of the wanted in my tween years and i was surprised you even mentioned them! i 100% agree though, their reality show on E! was a huge mess. they just created so many unnecessary drama and definitely torched the wanted's public image, i'm not even surprised if that hellish reality show was one of the factors that broke them up (thankfully they're back together tho!)
