iv'e been a swiftie for a few years (i only recently got on stan twitter like a year ago) and tbh i think the pandemic made stan twitter way way worse... one thing is that taylor used to make her little inside jokes with us on tumblr & twitter but now she barely even uses social media bc of all the hate shes gotten over the years. i can also say for sure that taylor def has a personal connection w her fans but i feel like stan twitter has kind of ruined it. she sends us gifts and letters, money, invites us to her house, her m&g's are free, i can go on (she obv cant do all that during the pandemic) but now swifties are one of the main fandoms on twitter that fight other fandoms and attack people for no reason. + its really sad honestly bc taylor wouldnt like that at all :/

honestly i think with stan twitter people have a whole perception that is is ALL toxic wherein it’s just whatever fandom you’re in, the louie side is fantastic (in my opinion) and there is little to no drama but when you start to lean to the one direction side and begin to cross the boundary it becomes more... distorted shall we say, different fandoms hold different opinions (of course) and express them in different ways (of course) but people need to realise it’s not the whole of stan twitter that’s toxic just, certain parties that ‘ruin’ it (shall we say)

@@fluffylouis454 i agree!! i am personally on stan twitter (i don’t know about you?) and due to being an ot5 i tend to merge into different sections and it annoys me that people have a flawed view of let’s say harries and harrie twitter when we’re not all like that, as i said in my other comment and as you said it can be literally 10 fans who ruin it for 10,000 they can give such a bad rep and it’s awful. following with your bad apple analogy that’s so true just think of it like an extended metaphor, stan twitter being the tree, the branches being the different fandoms and the apples being the fans, one bad apple ruins the bunch and i suppose it is what it is as we can’t do anything about it but it still pisses me off

i was on 1d stan twitter for almost a year before i left bc i just couldn’t handle it anymore, i made so many amazing and nice friends on there and it was fun for the most part, but i was constantly seeing ppl who weren’t even in the 1d or solo 1d fandoms say terrible things about my favs and it just wasn’t good at all, and also everyone is so concerned and obsessed with the amount of streams on a song or the amount of stans an artist has and just doesn’t care about if a person is talented or anything that it just gets so exhausting having to deal with people like that and ruins the whole point of having a stan account tbh, like if you are only going to talk about a person that your account isn’t even for and say “ * blank * is such a flop they can’t even get on the charts while * their stan * is on the top of the charts” “imagine stanning * blank * couldn’t be me” “* blank * cant sing idk how they have fans honestly” it’s just makes no sense whatsoever and i don’t get how ppl think saying that stuff is ok, but honestly tho if it wasn’t for ppl who say rude stuff about other ppl for no reason i would probably still be on there bc it was genuinely so fun talking with ppl who have a common interest as me, and as i said before i made so many great friends while i was on there :)

My ADHD blurs the lines between what’s nice and what’s not and I’ll end up commenting something hurtful without realizing it, thinking it’s an innocent opinion or comment. I’ve tried to get people to understand that and apologize but I’ve hurt a lot of people without meaning to so I just stepped away. It hurt me more than it was worth.

I find cancel culture on Twitter to be quite ignorant. It’s educational values are lost when people are trending hashtags which put certain artists down or which are insulting. Why can’t an artist be held accountable for their actions without insults or cancelling them?? If you can have a conversation on their platform to make your point, that seems more efficient and effective to me. Otherwise, it begins to fall under the umbrella of toxicity. But it’s a culture that will just keep evolving and will continue to do so, so long as there’s this competition led marketing in the music industry.

I’m an ot5/ louie for almost a year and I was once canceled for using a non existent word but besides that I love to be on the louies‘ side so much bc it isn’t as much chaotic as the directioners‘ side tbh. I’m really glad, that my tl isn’t full of solo harries, who drag the louies down tbh. The thing, that surprised me was that there are people, who call themselves ot5s but hate Liam which I just don’t understand. I don’t want to only spread slander about stan twt, so there’s something positive about it, which is that the moots there are really friendly and take care of you a lot. as a kpop stan who's been on kpop twitter for a bit, i'd say fancams and fan edits were separated for a while before they kind of became synonymous on twitter.
fancams were videos filmed by fans at concerts and shows before becoming more mainstream within the industry (where broadcasting companies, i.e. mnet and kbs, started making more official "fancams" of kpop idol's performances, which is ironic as they were called fancams for the sole reason that they were filmed by fans, but now they're usually by these big companies.) those fancams are the vertical, longer videos of performances with very professional set ups and cameras.
fan edits are a bit different. they were clips edited together, taken from vlogs, stages and other forms of content in general. i guess this are the videos with more resemblance to the vines that you mentioned.
i don't know much about the fan edits outside of kpop twitter, but non-kpop fans probably started calling their own edits fancams because they're used for the same purpose as kpop fancams - to promote their faves and get people to watch their performances. but from what i've seen, non-kpop fancams/edits were different from kpop fancams and just adapted to being calls fancams through some weird evolution. now "fancam" is just a wider term for videos focusing on someone's faves in general, whether performances or movie scenes or vlogs and whatnot.

i LOVE this video. i was on stan twitter all of high school and i ended up deactivating around may of last year and it’s crazy how much it was affecting my mental health without realizing it. i was actually on tv show stan twitter and not music but i had mutuals that were involved in all kinds of different fandoms so i definitely saw what you talked about in this video. one of the funniest parts of music stan twitter to me was comparing charts. i don’t want to get all “not like other girls” here because i do love plenty of popular artists but as someone who does listen quite a few “underground” (like less than 30,000 monthly spotify listeners) artists, it was funny to see people care so much about popularity. just listen to the music, who cares how well it’s doing if YOU like it? i also was someone that was guilty of doing unfollow sprees like every other week just to keep that skinny ratio and it’s funny to look back and wonder why i cared so much about that.

being a fan of of a certain thing isn’t just you liking it, it’s you being part of a community (with a fandom name to identify you), and so your interest becomes a key part of your self-image. thus, it’s very easy to process hate or any kinda neg towards your face (including much needed criticism) as being also towards you and your sense of self. i really feel like a lot of overdefensive stan behaviour is an offshoot of self-defence?
when i was really deep into bts, if i heard anyone say ‘i think their music sucks’ or smth like that i would emotionally process that as them saying they hated me, which makes no sense. it also doesn’t help that make teen girls really do get bullied for having passions and interests, regardless of how ‘toxic’ they act, because it makes the aforementioned fear of being hated feel more plausible

well make take on stan twitter is that I freaking love it! yes i've been attacked many times before by people who share the same interest as me or people from other fandoms just because I voiced my opinions, however I made many great connections with people from all around the world and have made some really good friends throughout the years especially if no one around you irl understands your love for stars and music ,, it's pretty awesome to be able to argue with like-minded people online even though it can be harmful sometimes. I think the good overweighs the bad

there are so many layers to stan twitter and having watched it evolve over the years was wild but you brought up a lot of important points to get a basic understanding of the topic and its issues because this place has ISSUES lmaoo but yeah it is also an important outlet and escape for so many so it's difficult to just label it one thing (and even more difficult to navigate)

I think it's also weird that people decide that 'you're not a good fan' if you don't know/do certain things. Oh, you don't know this about your celebrity then you're not a good fan'. Oh, you didn't listen to all the songs of them, then you're a bad fan. I think you're a fan of you like listening their songs and support your artist in any way (liking posts, listening to music) There shouldn't be such high expectations on being a fan. For example: if I get into a new artist I feel very pressured to have listened to all their music, because otherwise you're not a good fan'. Or if you like the hit songs as much as other songs, you have a bad taste.
