- Let's see what happens if we remove the ROM from the board on this cheap Bluetooth speaker. Will sounds default to some generic tone prompts, or will it even work at all?

That is one of the major drawbacks of these cheap bluetooth speakers, the Annoying voice prompt 😠

I would expect to see a complete file system on the flash containing the base software, voice promts, even pictures (because chiese are lazy (no cleanup of code)) - It probably runs the same base software as a bunch of other Bluetooth-devices building on the same core.
Looks like I might be able to dump the ROM with my programmer, it has that part in the list, but are there any particular tools you'd suggest for analyzing the contents? Thanks!
@@ThatElectronicsFool The rom would only contain the raw sound data one after another; there's not going to be files much less a filesystem. The main chip is a microcontroller that stores it's own, most likely custom firmware. The start and end of the sound chunks within the rom are hardcoded in this firmware. The reason it won't work without the rom isn't because it needs something critical within it to function, it's because it fails initializing, demanding the rom to be present by design; making it continue without if not present would require a bit more code, and why write that when the rom is assumed present; it could just have continued without the audio, but is programmed to keep trying to read the rom in an infinite loop until it potentially succeeds. This is all assumptions based on experience with everything related, yet most likely correct, since there's feasibly not really any other option. A little late, but perhaps you'll sleep slightly better.

I'm curious if there's a way to change the sound to whatever you want like your own voice or the voice of a favorite celebrity.
I'd like to see the contents of that chip. what files are on it, file system and if you can change the sounds.
There probably is no filesystem, usually it's just raw binary data. But theoretically, yes, you could change the voices if you can find them in the ROM image and match their audio format.
@@oa1700 I'm guessing they aren't common audio formats like a wav or mp3 file.
@@coondogtheman It could be WAV, as that's quite close to raw PCM data, or just raw PCM.
But now that I think, they could actually save money by using MP3 and a smaller capacity flash IC, as the board can play audio from a TF Card (the firmware does have decoding capabilities) and MP3 has compression.
So it's not necessarily some proprietary format, and actually pretty unlikely to be. But you would need to identify the format from raw binary data as for the main IC to read and play it back without erroring out, it has to match the original audio.

It's so annoying. Sometimes if you leave it on when you go to bed it repeatedly says "low battery" every 30 seconds on full volume. You get that for about half an hour before it dies if you don't get out of bed and go downstairs to switch it off. What is the point of that? Why cant they just have the led blink quietly every 10 seconds to show what mode you're using. once for BT, twice for Audio in, thrice for, sd card, continuous for low battery.

I have a Bluetooth speaker but it has the worst inbuilt sound whenever i turn it ON or OFF, can you suggest how to delete or mute that sound forever, i want it to turn ON or OFF silently but it makes a very loud & high bass sound everytime.
You could achieve that in 2 ways:
- You can dump the ROM with a programmer, analyze it's contents, find the sounds with a hex editor, correctly identify their formats, and replace all that with empty placeholder data or with a custom sound of your liking (should be of the same size though, as each sound's end is probably hardcoded).
- You could make a board that cuts power to the speaker on power on and power off (arguably easier than the other solution, but pretty jank).
Is there any problem of performance of Bluetooth speaker when you remove a ROM? You finished a video without showing us the results if Bluetooth speaker stop working when you remove the ROM.

What happens if you swap the rom out with a rom from a different speaker with a different voice on it?
Probably wouldn't work as the audio clips will be at different addresses.

My mother recently got few of these portable sound systems to use in the kitchen. One didn't had the annoying notifications while the sound quality is trash the other two sound great but have this obnoxiously loud notifficiation prompts similar to ones on the video, and even by thinking about it makes my head hurt. Every time I turn it on and change modes it feels like someone is scraping my ears, it's that painfully loud. I stopped using it and hopefully I find the way to disable that trash notifications.

Im 6yrs 2late but is there anyway i can shut her voice off and the beeping sounds on the portable LM882 Please need help i live in a big share house and everytime i use it esp during the night or i fall asleep i hve all volumes down low but wen i turn it on the voice and noizes and all the lights are screaming at there loudest and brightest it annoys the living f#&k crap out of me so im sure my housemates love it. the rom contains the bios/firmware/os removing it is like a pc without OS, i'm also fed up withe the announcments the high startup volume so made a own rda5807 adrunio based radio.

Removing the microcontroller or disconnecting some of its gpios may do the job. Turning the speaker on may be easy, but at least two things will have to be added: physical switches for turning on and possibly a potentiometer for volume adjustment. Connecting logical state analyser to gpios will tell you what to do.
Removing mcu the speaker doesnt work maybe reprogram the ROM
I have a similar one, turn on with the incredibly high volume !!!!!!!! No matter the last configuration, to top the damn screaming voice!, try key combinations and nothing! They spend money on putting a horrendous voice instead of putting better quality or at least putting a manual with a voice-over setting
You get what you paid for 😂😂😂 Probably just go with quality branded stuff next time
Just fix a switch between a speaker connection wire...and off it...then turn on the speaker no sounds will hear then turn on the custom switch...😁

Fixing a switch between the connection to the speaker..so when you turning on the board, speaker won't make any noises...then after that...,turn on the switch that we fixed .. that's all...

Really dig your teardown videos and the level of explaining you do, Have you thought of doing some modding videos maybe using the "ESP8266 ESP-12S" or the version with USB board++ "NodeMcu Lua ESP-12E"? (I think they go as very small WiFi enabled Arduinos, pretty cheap.) I ordered a few to mess around with I lost my ideas while I waited for them to arrive :) . (saw some videos of someone modding their old Neato with it for example.)
Edit: yeah this is my underhanded try at getting some video content/documentation/inspiration I would want to watch, hope that is okay :)

I would love to mess around with more of that sort of stuff later on, well, would like to do it sooner than later. At the rate I'm going, don't know when I'll get around to it. The ESP stuff certainly looks interesting and I've debated getting some modules to mess with, but I've already got a bunch of stuff sitting around that I want to do videos on, just haven't gotten to.

That sounds pretty much perfect tho, that means that when you learn it you'll have fresh in your mind the details that mattered and that were hard to grasp going in and can explain those. But I can't twist your arm on this, I'm pretty sure you're about half or a third of a globe away :D (What I keep thinking I want to try is something like a WiFi status console, but connect it in a way so I keep my Neato D85's warranty, but yeah would need to start really simple and maybe even that is too much.(there are some videos on it on youtube, with software I think I could study to start with.))

I'm sure it can be done, I haven't messed with this since though. I think it would take having to figure out what address of the ROM it accesses to extract what's there and figure out what type of format it is. A little bit above my current skill level, but maybe we can revisit this at some point.
@@ThatElectronicsFool I got the same model, it didnt have that passive radiator though. The battery was shit and the voice prompt is indeed annoying, I have never programmed chips before(the closest I got to was flashing a bios rom with a ch341a programmer) I guess I will try my luck and see how it goes.

@@ymenace5024 turns out I bought a bt201, been using serial port to control it with a small Arduino board(press a button on the Arduino, Arduino sends a serial command to bt201)

Not without a ROM programmer and it wouldn't be a filesystem anyways, so it would require manual analysis of the ROM's contents to figure out what files are where.

Maybe you can cut the voice pin on the ic, what is the model of the ic, maybe we can find the pinout diagram somewhere!
Voice out? It's likely a generic ROM chip, they are usually SPI or I2C, and do not have any special pins for each kind of data output or whatever, they are just connected to a master device that can then read and write information.
Or if you're talking about the main IC, then it does not have such pin because it looks like it does the job of switching modes, Bluetooth connectivity and audio output to an amplifier (I think the other 2 chips are class D amplifiers, but it also could be that the control chip is an ASIC that has amps built into it)
I removed a crystal that says 24.000 mhz. Afther that it doesnt work anymore. Im a lake😫

That day I was in the headphones until late confident that the low battery sound was deactivated... And while I was watching a video.... The volume of the headphones INCREASED LOUDLY to level 100... So that the recorded voice will be activated of "LOW BATTERY PLEASE CHARGE".....
THAT SUPER LOUD SOUND LEFT ME KNOCKED OUT AT THAT MOMENT... I FELT WEIRD... AS IF SOMETHING HAD HIT ME... (remember that sound waves also emit force and if they are strong they hit the eardrums). ....
BECAUSE OF THAT I WAS LEFT WITH TERRIBLE PAIN... THE INFLAMMATION DID NOT GO DOWN...
I HAD HYPERACUSIS, THINITUS AND RINGING IN MY EARS for 1 whole year and COULD NOT HEAR ANY KIND OF SOUND BECAUSE MY EARS WERE HYPER SENSITIVE......
I HAVE CRIED FOR ALMOST ALL THAT YEAR.....
I BEGGED GOD FOR HELP AND HE HEARD MY VOICE.
IT WAS REALLY TREMENDOUS WHAT I HAPPENED.
