I'm an attorney in San Diego. About 15 years ago, I was defending 2 young Marines who'd had a minor brush....Sgt Maj LeHew was senior enlisted at their command. Day of court hearing, I came around the corner to courtroom, Sgt Maj was there in service C uniform with medals. I don't think I showed it, but I immediately choked up: A. He was there for his men. B. I felt like I should've genuflected at the Navy Cross. Wish there were more like him, especially now.
Sergeant Major Justin LeHew’s guidance list: Whatever it takes ... Savage action and aggression in combat and in life ... In total combat and warfare, you will get punched in the face ... No excuses. Don’t have a victim mentality ... Never leave a fallen comrade behind, both in and out of the military ... Moral and ethical leadership both in and out of combat ... Take total responsibility ... Always in the fight, and never out of it ... Do what it takes to build the best team ... Accept blame and shoulder burdens ... Set your ego aside for the good of the collective ... Establish and reinforce a winning mentality on and off the battlefield ... Be part of the solution, not part of the problem ... Leadership is about people and getting the best from them and from yourself ... Be a man or woman of character ... Live an honorable and valorous life ... Not for Self, but for Country
Went to HS with Justin and was honored to introduce him at a our local Legion for an event for him in Columbus Grove. He's as humble now as he was on the baseball field, locker room and classroom. An absolute bulldog on the field. His mom was just as he describes her, great lady! Thanks for your service Justin!
I feels like high school kids need to be listening and learning from these podcasts. It's better than any history book you get when you're in school. This Marine is incredible and full of so much wisdom. Learned so much from him.
I’m 18 and I wish I could’ve heard one of these when I was 14-15 it would’ve changed my life. But even now I am extremely grateful to be able to listen to these at work. It keeps me from complaining about little inconveniences and it motivates me to focus on the big picture instead of the present.
Did anyone else channel their inner Echo while listening to retired Sergeant Major Justin LeHew? "Dang". Thank you for your service and for being a true American hero.
Outstanding! I've been patiently waiting everyday to see this particular episode after listening to the podcast. Sgt. Major Lehew is the best, of the best. Semper Fi, yut!
How much different would the world be if fathers took the approach of “my job is to prepare you for what the world is going to throw at you” and “you are my responsibility until your 18”
It would be a very world, indeed. That's the approach and philosophy I'm going to take if I ever become a parent because I couldn't agree more with it.It's part of a parent's job to prepare their kids to be able to survive without them and to be independent,self-sufficient and autonomous human beings.
Prior to listening to this I had never heard about Justin LeHew, but since Jocko podcast is the best, I gave it a go, always worth your time. And even though I've not finished 242 yet, its right up there among the best episodes. Jocko just brings in such awesome guests. Thanks a lot.
I agree 💯. Lehew is different....he was one of my Drill Instructors in 1997, he was only a staff sergeant at the time...To this day I'll bet on him to make it in French Foreign Legion OR he can be next to General Patton without missing a beat....he is unique and clairvoyant.... I believe he should come back on and go into depth about being a Drill Instructor.....what is it like behind the curtain??? At MCRD San Diego. He used to sing the song cheesy 80s song "Maniac" by flashdance when he smoked recruits....It sucked but there where times when he was hilarious.... Lehew of the best I've ever seen at explaining a story hands down. He can pump up a room and give you goosebumps in 5 seconds. A Legend and one of a kind, he was made for war.
i found myself on a walk while listening to this, i didnt have any direction but was just moving, i listened to the entire thing and didnt feel like any time had gone by.. an excellent one
I was with Highway in, “The Nas,” and one thing I want to say is that at the end of that day, he grabbed our LT and came vehicle to vehicle to give us a hug and tell us we were okay. Love this man.
Winning and losing is itself a dichotomy of leadership. Even if we don’t want to admit that losing is a strategy we all know that winning isn’t guaranteed and the first way to win on the field is to win in your mind before the enemy is actually seen
Every One of your podcasts is absolutely Amazing!! Each has its own treasures that are perspectives from your “guests” that ones for you Echo..😂 Is Absolutely information that is REAL! No Fake News and A Podcast that I know my kiddos are learning from! Thank You for encouraging TRUTH & Consequence! Love&Light! Sheri Morgan
I’m only 1:30:00 into this because I can only listen to it 20 min at a time, but what a hell of a story man. I’m really, really enjoying this. I regret so bad not joining the military, I really do. Anyways, I get to live it through this guys’ stories. Thank you to both of you 👍🏻
Me too, I as a kid I always wanted to meet Lt/Col Audie Murphy As a kid in the 50's & 60's I was privileged to meet many vet's from ww2 & Korea, even some from ww1 like my grandfather Pvt. Gordon H. Belflower Sr. Who served w/ the 111th medical train 36th Div. On the Hendenburg Line.
I was a bartender at an American Legion and what Major Le Hew describes about his father being at the VFW is straight on. Men and Women. Some folks came to bar for a quick drink; some folks came to the bar to get drunk; some folks came to bar to be with friends; some folks came to the bar to watch TV, it goes on and on and on. It was the BEST job I had ever had in my life. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
The advertisement that got me the most when I was young was in a magazine. It showed a heavy swamped area that was dark and it was just trees and vines etc. The top said US NAVY and "pictured below from left to right" with 7 names. You couldn't see a single person.
I definitely want to see Nick Irving on the podcast in the future. Truth be told,I'm actually a little surprised that Jocko hasn't had him on the podcast yet. I also want to see Jocko get on Remi Adeleke,Rudy Reyes,Nate Fick,Mark Dvine,Dom Raso,John Devine, Jason Everman,Thomas ''Drago''Dzieran,Mike Glover,Wes Moore,Dr.Michael A.Wood Jr and since Jocko had on Gary Sinise,he should also have on the actor and comedian,Rob Riggle(who was in the Marine Corps for over 20 years). Also,I would love to see Jocko have on more veterans from other countries. He had Canadian Army veteran Jody Mitic on...TWICE,he should get on guys like Ant Middleton and Jason Fox,too.
I was a Recruit at MCRD San Diego in the Company where SgtMaj Lehew was a Senior Drill Instructor and I can personally attest to his teaching abilities and exacting standards. In addition to being remarkable in almost every role he's served, SgtMaj Lehew's a gifted Storyteller, Teacher, Mentor, Leader, & Warfighter. Semper Fidelis SgtMaj!
I was in platoon 2023 or 2323 my date of entry was 7/21/97 he was on of my DIs.....best at breaking down a story and was 100 intense, no joke, he was a SSgt at the time....
This man can talk but he has amazing stories and lessons learned. Great stuff Jocko. 💯 Value Added 💯 brother. Just bought some stuff from the store since your bringing tons of value into my life. Reading “Extreme Ownership” now. Book is clutch. Simple, straight forward knowledge but we as people are our own worst enemy sometimes. That and fighting the fight against stagnation, slow death.
What a true Patriot. If I had leadership like him while in who knows I could still be in. I seen leaders like this far and between. An inspiring individual. 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Sergeant Major Lehew was my Regimental Sergeant Major at 3rd Marine regiment I am damn proud to have met and shaken this mans hand.
Me too Semper Fi!
@spike spiegel Most nights!
He’s from my hometown

This might have been my favorite podcast of the year so far. Incredible story teller with an incredible story...
SOG
He was one of my DIs in 1997 at MCRD San Diego.....best story ever, hands down, a legend
Justin LeHew for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a man! What an attitude!
SgtMaj Lehew and I were LCpls together on the same deployment.
He was an AAV crewman and I was a Grunt riding in the back.
Where do marines keep their massive balls?!
Did anyone else channel their inner Echo while listening to retired Sergeant Major Justin LeHew? "Dang". Thank you for your service and for being a true American hero.
2nd level, red windows, take the top half of that building down
"My pleasure"
😂😂😂 My favorite part
Outstanding! I've been patiently waiting everyday to see this particular episode after listening to the podcast. Sgt. Major Lehew is the best, of the best. Semper Fi, yut!
This is one hard man. Glad he's on our side!

Coming from a woman it means even more. Thank you for your comment. I have a 2 year old boy and I’ll be telling him that in about 10 years 👍🏼
Only 30 minutes in, but I can tell that this guy is a great story teller!
He is the best story teller. He was my DI in 1997.....
Jocko, these podcasts are soooo good. Thank you for sharing the stories of these incredible people that have risked their lives for our comforts.
Prior to listening to this I had never heard about Justin LeHew, but since Jocko podcast is the best, I gave it a go, always worth your time.

Definitely one of Jocko’s best... Lehew should come back.
I feel like I say that every episode.
Absolutely. One of the best.
I agree 💯. Lehew is different....he was one of my Drill Instructors in 1997, he was only a staff sergeant at the time...To this day I'll bet on him to make it in French Foreign Legion OR he can be next to General Patton without missing a beat....he is unique and clairvoyant....

"Watch the Eagle Fly over and take a dump on your head."
This podcast is Legendary in my book.
i found myself on a walk while listening to this, i didnt have any direction but was just moving, i listened to the entire thing and didnt feel like any time had gone by.. an excellent one
When he's explaining the fighting every 20-25 years, that's a perfect explanation of the industrial war complex.
I was with Highway in, “The Nas,” and one thing I want to say is that at the end of that day, he grabbed our LT and came vehicle to vehicle to give us a hug and tell us we were okay. Love this man.

Hands down one of the best jocko podcast episodes. Thanks to these heroes for their awesome service to our country
Listened to this podcast. I'm back to watch this man speak. Incredible.
Hearing my home Island of Saipan mentioned in any form of media (40:14) will always put a smile on my face.

Legend. Plain and simple. One of the best Jocko podcasts yet.
Me too, I as a kid I always wanted to meet Lt/Col Audie Murphy
As a kid in the 50's & 60's I was privileged to meet many vet's from ww2 & Korea, even some from ww1 like my grandfather
Pvt. Gordon H. Belflower Sr. Who served w/ the 111th medical train 36th Div. On the Hendenburg Line.
Lehew was my Senior Drill Instructor in 1998. He was harder and crazier than any of the green belts. Utmost respect for this legend!
Totally LEGIT! Every minute spent listening to this one it's worth it.
Not even half way through but this maybe my favourite Jocko episode. Amazing to listen to thank you for bringing Justin on the show.
Such an amazing podcast. Every minute worth listening, and such a great story with great specifics.
Dayton boy here. Love listening to the guests close to home. 4.5hrs. Standby to get some.

Thank you....semper fi
This is why I’m here!
This is one of my all time favorites. Sgt. Lehew is a masterful storyteller.
Been waking up at 5AM everyday this week. Ready for anything. Great podcast!
Jocko, you need to get someone who was at the Pentagon on 9/11 to be on the show.
Or an FDNY firefighter
Absolute legend. Great episode.
The advertisement that got me the most when I was young was in a magazine. It showed a heavy swamped area that was dark and it was just trees and vines etc. The top said US NAVY and "pictured below from left to right" with 7 names. You couldn't see a single person.
I'm only 2 hours in and I'm glued. What a podcast!
Good evening Echo
This man is an incredible teacher mentor marine and person glad to see him sharing more with us!

This dude was our guest speaker on the school house. Most trackers consider him the Goat.
Jocko
Can you get Nicholas Irving "the Reaper" on the podcast?
Hey everybody like my comment if you want him on the podcast
This would be awesome. I know he’s been on other podcasts., but jocko sway of podcasting and asking questions would get more out of him I think

This would be great and I agree he’s a great interviewer who gets deep and I don’t think Nicholas has gone there yet like jocko could help provide
@@coachkota1774 hell yeah that's why I want to see jocko interview him, so I can hear all the cool stuff he's done
Kind of a soft spoken type, but I bet his bark could be heard across the Camp
I know I keep imagining what it probably sounds like lol
I graduated corporals course in the q hut hes talking about 40:30 lvt museum is awesome!
I’m only 18 minutes in and it is a privilege to listen to such an evolved mind
Can someone put up Sargent Major’s list up from the end of the podcast?
delsolpaintball
You can. Did you miss the entire point of his message?
rrek7 me asking someone to voluntarily write a list is missing the message of a podcast? 🤷🏻♂️ 🤡
Its on an earlier comment on this video
