    I have seen a couple of other videos from you and they are good techniques. But this one is funny. What other method is possible to solve this problem ?
    12z and 4z are Numerators on opposite sides of "=" so we can just cancel out make them 3 and 1. Now the denominator from LHS will multiply with 1 on RHS. So now LHS will be 3 and RHS will be the part which you called something.
    Not sure why you call your method a shortcut. I don't know of any other way to solve this.

    how do you know that 5-(6y/x) MUST equal 3?

      Because the equation says that 12z over that expression equals 4z. The only way that can be the case is if the expression is 3, since 12÷3 = 4

    That’s crazy actually, but I doubt it’ll be applicable to a larger variety of problems. Cool trick tho
