I emailed Drew not long after Themata was released as there was no drummer credited for the album. When he told me he recorded the drums and that drums was really his first instrument, I was completely floored. Steve really had his work cut out for him, but has really excelled as Karnivool's drummer. BTW, fantastic playing Troy, you have nailed everything I have seen you do and you have a great way of communicating your skills to the rest of us.
Why are there 4 dislikes?!?!?!? Awesomeness NEVER deserves a dislike and what I just saw was pure awesomeness x 10!!!! Wow man you are a freakin off the charts amazing drummer!!! Two thumbs up from here in Mississippi, USA!!!
Pretty sure Drew played all the songs on Themata except for Scarabs which he programmed. An incredibly talented man indeed. This cover is spot on by the way.
My friend flipped trying to count the time signature, this is insanely impressive man you're an incredible drummer and your kit sounds fantastic. Sits so well in the mix.
Hey man, you're easily the best drummer on TH-cam right now no question. I'd love to see you cover something by Protest the Hero, they're a great band that really knows music inside and out like you do, it would be amazing to see you playing something by them. Till then keep up the great work and keep rockin' out as usual!
@NickThe5ticks yeah man i'm working on a few original things at the moment. Haven't played in NSW in a while normally its just over the border in Byron or south Tweed etc. Played in Sydney with a band called Helm at the end of last year
Awesome, man! I've been a huge Karnivool fan for about one year and still have to get familiar with their stuff from before Sound Awake... this sounds amazing. I'd love to see you cover some of their stuff from Sound Awake!
I am obsessed with this band now. I watched your vid a while ago after I found about them but never gave them a true listen till about 3 weeks ago. Now I play their songs almost everyday, and even got my buddy into them. You deff should do more of their covers, particularly New Day, and simple Boy :-), those covers would be choice! Awesome vid as always.
killed it dude. NICE this track's been the bane of my existence since i tried to learn it off of Drew's bedroom demo in 04. (Gave up after too many sticks ended up impaled in snareheads!) cool to see someone other than The Judd nail it (proves it can be done by mere mortals!)
Troy i really admire your work can you upload a video explaining the main drum part of the song! i just like the feel of it, but by ear and on that speed takes a lot of work to grasp the whole mechanics of the groove! please!
You should do a drum tour and show your equipment that you use for recording drums. That would be awesome. So please if you could do that it would be fantastic.
Fantastic playing as usual! World-class & great to see its an Aussie doing it. Any plans to write/record some originals? Also do you ever play live in NSW?
Awesome job Troy. And yes: Karnivool is brilliant. Can you perhaps do the 'The Caudal Lure' cover from their 'Sound Awake' album? Thanks! Keep up the amazing work! (Y)
Nice “gopro” on the crash. Recorded very well to. What recording equipment did you use? Great drums as well Pearl Reference are the best for the money period....Demon Drive is smooth and almost to fast. Great drumming man...
When you're approaching a song of this nature (djent, polyrhythmic metal, whatever...) do you rely on sheet music, or do you listen to the song until it's engraved in your mind? By the way, mad respect, as always, on this cover!
Awesome Job Troy! Can I ask you which camera (and how you mount it) do you use over your china? That camera angle is freaking awesome, I want that too! :D And also over your head, what do you use ?? Keep it up!! Carlo
I've alwasy wandered troy, how do you manage to get time to work to pay all that equipment, work out to be in the shape you are AND practice to do perform that awesome drumming? xD
I wont be doing a lesson video for this song. It's actually a really challenging piece to play as there is no consistent pattern on the right hand. I would suggest writing in the counting and simply playing it through slower and gradually build it up to speed. Hope this helps man
Amazing work as always mate. Although my sole focus in music is guitar and I know little about drums, I've seen a fair few seasoned players, would love to see some Porcupine Tree covers someday, you're something else man. Definitely see a lifetime of passion when I see you play. All the best mate, killing it!

Trow Wright covering Karnivool songs? I'm sold. Nice job on this song. I look forward to seeing more of these videos.
Jesus, this song is nuts. No matter what video you upload, I still find my way back to this song.
the next song on this album goes so perfectly well, its a beautiful slow melodic piece, one of the best bands ever
"I will be doing more Karnivool covers in the future."
Come on! I'd love to see something off Sound Awake.
Amazing cover man
Drew Goddard is a very talent guy and Karnivool is one of the best and underrated bands of this century
Figures, I've watched all your Mesh vids x1000 times, first time in years I've searched for Scarabs, and you're the first hit...instant joy
@andrew7603 i would say most of the animals as leaders stuff. they constantly push all the boundaries!
More Karnivool covers, please!!!
Pretty sure Drew played all the songs on Themata except for Scarabs which he programmed. An incredibly talented man indeed. This cover is spot on by the way.
When I first heard Themata, I was hooked instantly. I also recommend Birds of Tokyo. Both great bands with the same lead singer.
@Guerzarro unreal bro. no worries at all! gald you're enjoying these bands as much as i do!
Hey man, would you be able to do a cover of 'The Caudal Lure' by Karnivool? That would be hectic
Jesse Ball great choice!
Yeah I love tool mate. Planning on doing some stuff of theirs hopefully this year
I would get an aneurysm if I tried to count this and play it. So much respect, man.
My friend flipped trying to count the time signature, this is insanely impressive man you're an incredible drummer and your kit sounds fantastic. Sits so well in the mix.

Awesome, man! I've been a huge Karnivool fan for about one year and still have to get familiar with their stuff from before Sound Awake... this sounds amazing.
I'd love to see you cover some of their stuff from Sound Awake!
Amazing playing as usual.
Thanks for introducing me to new music. I'm discovering all these awesome prog bands because of your covers.
This sounds really cool. I love your videos. Thanks to you, I now know about this band.
@Blixish haha i'm actually thinking of doing some fusion/funk based thing soon
That would also be awesome; breakdown at the end is pretty freaking sweet
I am obsessed with this band now. I watched your vid a while ago after I found about them but never gave them a true listen till about 3 weeks ago. Now I play their songs almost everyday, and even got my buddy into them. You deff should do more of their covers, particularly New Day, and simple Boy :-), those covers would be choice! @Ayriainen yeah i might do something a little more specific on my second drum lesson channel
I have one word for this song "hectic" and one word for you as a drummer "inspirational"
What the heck did I just watch? My brain can't process that much awesomeness all at once.....must watch again.... :-)
Finally, a Karnivool cover!
thanks a lot mate, i will do - im planning on getting a proper interface sometime so i'll have a go at redoing it along with the 8th notes, cheers!
When I visit Australia Im insisting on meeting this beast of a drummer!
killed it dude. NICE
this track's been the bane of my existence since i tried to learn it off of Drew's bedroom demo in 04. (Gave up after too many sticks ended up impaled in snareheads!)

@Metalcorable haha have slapped a clear cs back on since....sounds huge

Great job on the cover! Karnivool is so good, Sound Awake is one of the best albums ever.
Never heard about this band before! They are great! Greetings from Finland.
this made my day great work !
....takin that bass for a jog...
Great job.
yeah mate you nailed it! try adding quarter notes or 8th notes on the hats as well
Troy i really admire your work can you upload a video explaining the main drum part of the song! i just like the feel of it, but by ear and on that speed takes a lot of work to grasp the whole mechanics of the groove! please!
@TheGoldiloxPrinciple ill probably give set fire from sound awake. an amazing album!
My favourite song from Karnivool. Thx :)
yeah man would love to play through set fire to the hive!
did you check out the transcript? that would really help as far as placement etc is concerned
Fuck yeah they should. One of the best things to ever come from Perth. So wish they would do like a Scarabs 2 in their next album.
Please do Themata!!! Also good to see a fellow aussie drummer doing well on TH-cam!
DOWNLOADING KARNIVOOL RIGHT NOW!
Great job man !
You never did any more Karnivool covers in the future did you?
there's 14 counts all up in the opening loop, but i've transcribed it as a bar of 3 then 4 and then 7.. did you check the transcript in the link?
Nailed it! Perfect!
I miss my Demon Drive pedals. Can't believe I sold them years ago. They were so nice.
@Guerzarro Same here bro. Introduced me to Karnivool, Periphery, Animals as Leaders. I love this guy.
You should do a drum tour and show your equipment that you use for recording drums. That would be awesome. So please if you could do that it would be fantastic.
I want those legacy cymbals soo baad ... Great cover dude, as always! This song is ca
@DrThundercheetah both if i have time!
great cover!
You should do a cover of Capilarian Crest by Mastodon. Or something by DEP. That would be so good
Fantastic playing as usual! World-class & great to see its an Aussie doing it.
Any plans to write/record some originals?
Also do you ever play live in NSW?
Sooo awesome! Maybe simple boy or deadman next?
Awesome job Troy. And yes: Karnivool is brilliant.
Can you perhaps do the 'The Caudal Lure' cover from their 'Sound Awake' album? Thanks!

wow amazing
Awesome Job Troy! Can I ask you which camera (and how you mount it) do you use over your china? That camera angle is freaking awesome, I want that too! :D And also over your head, what do you use ?? Keep it up!! Carlo
Troy, would love to understand the 3/4 groove in the Karnivool song 'Cote', it's got a funny inversion I can't quite work out.
i approve this comment
It helps if in the verse at least you count 8/8 and then 7/8, then the pre-chorus and chorus switch between 6,7,8/8.
I've alwasy wandered troy, how do you manage to get time to work to pay all that equipment, work out to be in the shape you are AND practice to do perform that awesome drumming? xD
sick job man, you should cover some TesseeacT! How about Eden 2.0?
GOD DAYUM, ur frekin awesome man.
man, you're sick ))) how can you play that and lead with left-foot on hi-hat?
Holy crap that's good
I'd love to see a cover of Deadman + Change!
but first lets have that Koloss medley already! :D
Dude, your double kicks are a fucking siege engine. 1000 years ago you'd be beating down castle gates, props!
would you kindly describe your mic setup? and what's the size of that room? omfg Your drum sounds good enough for an epic album tracking...
Steve Judd would be proud and i am blown away.
Yes! This is my favourite song of theirs! You play it much better than I do though, I think you ruined my fun. haha
@magikarpp thanks man
