This version is even better than Mercury's (it's hard to say that). There were some rumours at the time (after Mercury's death) that Queen wanted George to replace Freddie (I think he really matched his voice with Queen sound) I read that George rejected, because he didn't like touring so much
George Michael is a LEGEND is his own right. There is nothing George can't sing. Tell me who else can sing songs by Queen, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, etc. and do them justice? Another question, have you ever heard anyone sing a George Michael song and do it justice? I have never heard anyone be able to pull that off. Who can sing with Elton, Whitney, Aretha and Mary J. Blige and hold their own. Yes, George did that too. Miss him so much. RIP George and Freddie.
When George performed this, his lover in the audience that night had just been diagnosed with Aids...imagine all that was whirling in his head. Freddie thought highly of George & envied (in a friendly way) he got to sing with Aretha.
george was a great friend to freddie, queen. he was also an amazing singer, much more than just careless whisper. this was a tribute concert for freddie after he died. queen gave george 1st choice of songs to sing. he chose this, and nailed it.
I remember either Brian or Roger pointing out , George was the only act that night who did not have to change the key to sing the song .... well except Bowie for his bits of Under Pressure
Great tribute to Freddie. People loved and love Freddie. His voice grabs you and would never let you go. His vibrato makes songs come alive. That is why he has that staying power. Plus he is a genius composer. Then his personality as a performer.
There were many memorable moments but this was the best performance of the FM tribute concert. Legendary!! (BTW George Michael also sung '39 that night)
This tribute, is as such. George knew Freddie's greatness. George is more than just Careless Whisper. Listen to his version of The Long and Winding Road or Killer, Papa was a rolling stone.
Great reaction, thanks! Queen knew how good he did singing this with them and capitalized on it with the release of this performance on an EP called Five Live with 4 other tracks from this concert. Proceeds went to the Mercury Phoenix Trust for HIV/AIDS. George Michael was a fantastic singer and another artist lost way too soon. He died at the age of 53 due to heart disease.
Wow! I was going to suggest this song from the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert. There is also one by Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin that performs with Queen at this same concert. George Michael was the only one that Queen could find that could reach the notes that Freddy did. Both of you are a joy to watch. I have never known any Queen video to be blocked. This is a fund raiser for AIDS and you could probably contest the block.
George Michael really had a very powerful voice. His original group was Wham, which was internationally famous. His solo career was hugely popular and only ended with his death on Dec. 25, 2016.
Hey man, you said, he had to practice and practice. No man he had just to do rehearsal with the group of queen. Because of a simple reason, you said that because you dont know about george michael He was known one the greatest voices on earth, any way he did the song as george michael does it not imitating Known as well as being one of the greatest live performers an amazing songwriter no body writes songs for him I am saying that and i am a huge fan of freddie But you just talked about george michael as he was a student begginer When the reality is that when he sang this song as a tribute to freddie , george michael was a huge mega star.
I am a HUGE fan of George as well! Just an FYI, tho… I am pretty CERTAIN that I saw an interview piece by George where he did actually say that he rehearsed this song over and over and over (more than the others practiced)… Simply because it was really IMPORTANT to him personally, to make it PERFECT. Which also speaks to how GREAT George was and is.
@@marciebulsaraorcutt any way the event was big, and george michael is known as being so perfectionist, he did that for all his works, but the kid said it here having no idea of who george michael was in a very pejorative way.
Keyboard player is part of Queen now called Spike. Also a base guitarist as John Deakon retired from Queen in 1997 i think. He is still involved in the band administratively. Roger Taylors son plays also, Tiger Taylor and he is a brilliant drummer as well.
I don't know if you can access BBC documentaries, but there's a good one on the BBC iPlayer in the UK about the Freddie Mercury tribute concert titled "Freddie Mercury: The Final Act". In it they explain George Michael's determination to get this song exactly right and the hours of practice he dedicated to it before the concert. There's also a humorous story about Elton John and Axel Rose's collaboration in singing Bohemian Rhapsody at this concert. If you can get it, well worth a watch.
George Michael is/was a soul singer, Freddy Mercury was not. So, yes their singing styles are very different. No comparison. FM had great vocal range, but cannot beat GM's incredible combination of great vocal range and the his extraordinary ability of vocal control. GM can hold a note FLAWLESSLY (as you witnessed) for like an hour without taking a breath. A lot of singers live (including FM) sound very breathy and choppy during live performances. To me - if a singer sounds this amazing LIVE and it is hard to tell if this is a studio recording or a live performance - that is what an INCREDIBLE singer is to me. FM was a good singer with great vocal range, but GM is a more talented singer. Anyway. Great reaction. RIP FM and GM - 2 major losses of talent to this world.
My apologies for sounding “confused” but… I read “no comparison".... and then proceed to read a long comparison? (And in response to a performance that is supposed to be ALL about one talented singer HONORING another talented performer.) I actually ADORE George as much as I do Freddie... but, "for like an hour" would be quite a long time to hold a note! As you correctly point out, these two gentlemen were quite different vocally; each one excelled in different areas. (For instance, Freddie also sang OPERA with a four octave vocal range.) My apologies again… It’s just a shame that this had to be made into yet another (unnecessary) “who is better than who" discussion?
Imo, the only thing that makes freddie a better singer than george is, he wasn't vocally trained, yt he's so great. Yes there's still flaws but as i said, he wasn't vocally trained. Although I won't even lie, george is such a great singer too. If this song is his, i would still put it in my playlist. It's just that, they both have their own lane in singing. There's something that the other one could do, but the other one couldn't vice versa.
Wembley holds 72000 in the audience. Queen want their music to be heard but there were many artist maybe they have their music blocked ? and the DVD has just been on sale 30 years anniversary .

People who say GM performed better than they expected is so heartbreaking m. George was a monument in his own right.
george was a great friend to freddie, queen. he was also an amazing singer, much more than just careless whisper. this was a tribute concert for freddie after he died. queen gave george 1st choice of songs to sing. he chose this, and nailed it.
GM actually only met FM like 2 or 3 times, but was a huge fan of Queen's.
The pianist is Mike Moran, Freddie's friend and co-composer on the Barcelona album.
