  • Marantz recently launched its all-new flagship AV10 and AMP10 separates, a formidable home theater combo capable of driving a 16-channel home theater experience. We stopped by the HQ of Masimo Consumer to learn more about these two pieces of gear, and spent time with industry veteran Gary Dayton, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Marantz, who discussed how Marantz achieves its signature sound.

    Just replaced my Marantz 5012 with the new Marantz Cinema 50. Since my media room has an HVAC intrusion that does not permit height speakers I knew I would be reliant on the “speaker virtualization” feature and hoped it would work. I am pleased to say it does in my particular use case. Speaker virtualization doesn’t get much attention in reviews but it definitely does open up the sound stage - significantly! A real treat for the ears, I must say. (Congrats to the engineers! How often does that happen?) All the other features that suit my use case also work. So impressed with how the engineers made everything adjustable once Audyessey calibration is finished although I have not needed to adjust much of anything afterwards, so far. Here is a high-five to Marantz! 🍾👍👏👏👏👏👏👋👋

      @@av_nirvana Now if sony and its new x-series of projectors would step-up to the plate and hit home-runs like Massimo / Marantz - out of the box, I would be a most happy camper. Meanwhile, I continue to wait to see what Sony does this year. I see you bought JVC - NZ-8! Congrats but I’m holding out for Sony to get it totally right. Hope I don’t have to wait too much longer.😂🥳

      FYI: It is the new Marantz Cinema 50 that has this sound enhancement. Not overhead atmos for sure, but the movement is more refined and “sometimes” seems like atmos. Overall though, the sound is much fuller to my ear and the word “WOW” is something I heard myself say when I heard it for the first time. The engineers really did a good job on this new line of receivers, to my mind at least.

    Marantz keeps on stating 200w per channel they really need to clarify that’s 200w for 5 channels and rest of the channels is 70% power guarantee by marantz why do that that’s still 140w on remaining channels that’s still really good for a single amp

    I'm in the process of upgrading my home theater processor and the AV10 along with the AVM90 are the 2 finalist with Marantz slightly in the lead. The comments made in this about the warmth on Marantz worry me, is it really that colorized or is it just a marketing line? As far as the av10, it has a very interesting price point compared to more expensive (McIntosh) and cheaper (Arcam) options.

    Todd you said we could ask questions about Marantz so here goes. I currently use a Marantz AV8805A and recently changed speakers to Goldenear Triton One.R. They have built in subs and I guess they are confusing Audyssey which cannot correctly run room correction with them. I am running the XLR LFE sub outs to my front Triton's and also running the Unbalanced LFE sub outs to two subs in rear of room. The other difference I get with the Triton Ones is I can now get Auro 3D as a surround option which I could not get with my old speakers in play. The Marantz AV10 has four independant sub outputs so would that help Audyssey play nice with my Triton One's and my two rear sub's while still allowing me to get Auro 3D as a surround option? Thank you

      @@av_nirvana Thank you for the invite. Posted as requested. FYI due to a TH-cam video by Ripewave Audio I found out why I started to get Auro 3D as a surround option. Marantz released an update March 23rd 2023 that allowed Auro 3D to work with ceiling height speakers which previously required wall mounted height speakers in order to access Auro 3D. I had ceiling height speakers so Auro 3D was not available for me until this new Marantz update. I had automatic updates selected in my Marantz Processor so the update happened automatically while in standby mode and I never knew the update happened. After viewing the Ripewave video I have turned off automatic updates so I will now get a notification when Marantz firmware updates are available. It was just a coincidence that I changed my speakers at the time of this new update and not being aware of the update I assumed it was related to my change in floor speakers. Now my only concern is related to the Audyssey issue.

      @@av_nirvana I've never been a fan of Marantz, in my opinion they more or less just take a Denon and mess with it's sound signature to make it sound more "warm" then charge a huge premium. It's too bad that they won't let Denon make separates.

    • @av_nirvana
      @av_nirvana  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Edward135i That's actually not how it works. They are two separate business entities with different teams behind them. They do share some common parts, like HDMI boards and the HEOS board, and internal processes, like the basic bones of the menu system. But that's smart business because it allows for economy of scale. Also, they can use the size of the parent organization to attract access to new technologies (or so they claim). There are specific differences, tho, and the two organization have channels of communication to make sure they aren't replicating each other.
      Yes, they appear to be one in the same... and there's much speculation that one is simply rebadged. But, the reality is that's not the case.

    Digital technology implemented in top-of-the-line, in flagships AV processors (of different mass producers like the ones of the top 3 in the world - Denon, Marantz, Yamaha) has to be like flagships top-of-the-line smartphone producers (Huawei, Xiaomi, Samsung, Apple, Honor). Because in digital tech, what is flagship component today, will become obsolete in just a year or two... This is why in 2023, I don't want to buy old, obsolete technology at an unjustified cost! Only the newest and best-performing components has to be used and I don't see this in AV10 or in the Denon AVR A1H... In regarding only to the audio side of the Marantz AV10... My level of expectations at 7000 USD (or even more) is that I need one AV unit to sound like a flagship stereo, on ALL channels... BTW... Be honest... who is using 15 channels configuration in a living room? Or kilometers of wires for zone 2 or zone 3 connections in which the end result is to play same music, instead of separate very good quality audio components in those rooms? We are not talking about hearing the same music in corridors or on an elevator of a hotel, because who really wants this? Sabre DAC ES 9018 used inside AV10? Why not at least ESS 9039Pro or AKM4191EQ? Or a dedicated very low noise stereo DAC in dual differential mode per each channel? As a top-of-the-line product in 2023, it should have! And where is HDCD decoding? Audiophile CD format is not dead, SACD is not dead, Dolby Digital is not dead... Even vinyl is not dead, and in 2023 we still not having a decent phono preamplifier for both MM and MC cartridges in a top-of-the-line AV processor... In the audiophile community, we are still spinning HDCD CDs, SACD discs, DVD Audio discs - and for HDCD, we need that decoder. Also...we are in 2023, right? ...where is streaming and decoding native DSD1024 audio files? I want to see ultra-low noise separate power supplies inside of a top of the line AV processor... This is the level of quality that I expect from a Marantz or Denon AV processor flagship, in 2023. RCA connectors are made from gold-plated brass? This is NOT desirable, because of brass low conductivity. It should be made at least from silver or gold-plated OFC copper (again... I'm modest...I'm not mentioning pure silver-made connectors...). I want to see OCC pure copper or OCC pure silver wires used in inside cabling! Talking further...what OP-AMP are used inside? No info here... Also, no info regarding SINAD with EQ in flat mode at max output volume. I want an upscaler even from DVD definition, to 4k and 8k resolution! Also, who is really using HEOS?? Especially in this high-end area... McIntosh is having same marketing policy... No detailed info in regarding inside components used, and no tech info regarding very important audio performance in their top-of-the-line AV processor... Only high prices! With all due respect for these companies, this is not acceptable.
