Many people try to dive right into the stump and take it all at once and you took it side to side and a layer at a time just like it was designed to do. Hats off to you Marty!
The removal works best starting from the outside of the stump and move the wheel back and forth, like turning a lathe in small swaths. Take about a half to one inch per swarh.

I rented one of those types of stump grinders. Once. I found the Toro tracked stump grinders with the swinging heads to be waaaaaay easier to use (less work) and much faster. If they're available in your area, I highly recommend them. Appreciate seeing the progress you guys are making!

That's faster than digging them up with a backhoe. Some of the bigger stumps I have dug up have taken 30 min to dig up and then I have to move them to a burn pile and burn them later. Would much rather grind them but I don't have a grinder and I do have a backhoe so I guess I'm digging them up. lol :)
Any where you might be having vehicles/campers drive over the ground stumps you need to remove the mulch and properly back fill with dirt, the mulch will hold water and be a soft spot for years and years. You'll also need to grind deeper in the garden if you intend on using a roto-tiller otherwise the tines will get hung up on the stump and roots. Buried stumps/roots take a long time (decades) to rot...

Those of us who find it satisfying are subconsciously rejoicing and celebrating a job well done, so, it only stands to reason that we find it satisfying. Perhaps now you might understand why folks were asking for longer videos awhile back during a live done inside the house/cabin. This is what they mean, I think. They like to see more of the seemingly mundane activity that leads to the desired result. Again, it's all based on subconscious thought. No matter the reason. Arborist here. If you want to enjoy the stump grinding process ten times more and triple your grinding efficiency go up a step in grinder rental next time. A four wheeled self propelled or tracked stump grinder with a 27hp or preferably 35hp engine. It will sweep back and forth hydraulically. Also having had a broken tooth this time, which they will probably want you to pay for, ask for a couple of extras ahead of time - to be paid for later or returned with the machine. Fun to see your progress.
You seem to indicate it was operator error that the tooth/bolt broke (if he is suppose to pay). What was he doing wrong that caused the tooth/bolt to break?
Nothing wrong on his part. Teeth can easily break when hitting even an unforseen object in otherwise hazard free ground. Rental yards near me charge the customer for damaged teeth. Near you could vary. Have an extra or set of extras on hand could save a possibly long trip back to get one or more. By the way, if your unfortunate enough to have to grind in very rocky ground you could ruin an entire set of teeth.
Probably been said before, but to grind a stump you start from the outside, using the teeth at 3 to 6 (o'clock) i.e the teeth at the front to bottom of the rotation, this stops it from slowing down - never back cut - use the teeth on the way up of the rotation! great video though.

I used one of those hand grinders and before that I was employed to work for a guy that does stump removal and and today guess what i am in the business and i now have a Vermeer SC252 Stump Grinder an would never go rent a hand one again it cost me about $65.00 for the day a few years back to rent that hand grinder and now I can grind stumps and no real big tuff work behind running the machine and I also get make a few bucks I sure do Love the business( Beckman's Stump Removal LLC ) Breckenridge ,Minnesota. I thought I should not say nothing but those cutter teeth are not the cheapest I paid $10 to $12 just for one tooth but i brake a few but not like you did i took the carbide tooth out like split it but i can reuse the tooth but when the bolt breaks there trash Good Tunes with video and i am not into making videos but will have to see hate being in camera .... i guess I am just camera shy LOL !!
This machine is just the job for your roads and walkways by grinding the stumps to below ground level because you may want to finish the above by covering it all with stone/gravel to make a hard surface, but of course this will not be the case in the garden areas unless it is only lawns, but for growing vegetables ect and as the stumps are just below ground level it will always be a problem when digging by hand, using tilling machines and such like, it will be very frustrating and can easily also damage your equipment, the only and best way to stop this from happening is to get those suckers out of there, hard work and time consuming unless you hire a machine to dig them out, but once done it's done forever.
Stump grinders self destruct over time. I rented a heavy-duty stump grinder to remove 26 stumps. It pretty much needed rebuilding by the time I finished. The guy at the rental place said stump grinders require the most maintenance of all the tools they rent.
Yo martin! Don't put those chips in the ground! Save them for another mulching project. Use soil for lawn area and stone for driveways. You will regret it in the future as they rot. Your drive will be a constant headache and the lawn areas unstable. Need a plan for your garden, this won't do. Go all in, get a machine to pull and grade , the cost sucks but you will not regret it.
i hired one of those after watching it on yt, and holy frick it was heavy, especially working on a slope and wet soft ground. i couldn't get the job done had to get a man in an excavator to finish the job lol my advice to anyone thinking about hiring it is good if you're on firm level ground but if you're working on a slope get self propelled one or just get an excavator in.
Marty just a f.y.i. when you grind a stump always start on the outside edge and work your way into it, taking small bites and working side to side on the stump.
Yes you chew away at it about 1 inch at a time and swing the machine left to right grinding away at the portion closest to you til you complete the entire stump.

After you ground the stump below the surface you should’ve drilled 12 to 16 inch holes into the stump and poured Epsom salts in it and that would have sped up the rotting process of the remainder of the stump

It's always better to remove the stumps because a few years down the road the roots rot and you get a sink hole type dent in your lawn.

Think it is a good idea to pour some water on top of the stomps before grinding just to make them kind of delicate n easier for the machine to grind

Should be at leas 6'' to 8"' or more below the top soil when girding tree stump's
