One other thing, do not use ethanol fuel if it is going to sit a while, the stuff will ruin your carburator. It did mine and that is why I am on this video.

Hi. Why did you have to put a new tube over the old one? Couldn't you just JB Weld the cracked one?? If this is why my overflow tube is leaking, you're a God! Thanks
I had the same thing happenning on my 87 FXRS and I always used to smell gas but the bike ran great , I replaced the plastic inlet with the brass inlet , still smell gas . I had the guy who built my engine, very well established old time Harley machine shop check the carb out and fixed it up . Runs great , still smell gas . I can see gas coming out overflow tube when idling , it's getting worse . I took carb off my bike ,replacin the Kiehn butterfly with a Harley CV used rebuilt carb . I tried this test after watching your video ,dont see any bubbles . the float and needle and jet look good. It's gotta be something slightly cracked. When you turn fule on bike runs good and fule pours out overflow tube. It's time for the more reliable carb anyhow , but drives me nuts that can't figure it out. Original carb ,85k miles , I guess it's just done.

I have an 87 FXRS with the Kiehn Butterfly Carb . It runs great but I get a smell of gasoline all the time .Sometimes no evidence of drip just a smell . When I do notice a drip it is from the overflow tube on the bowl. I put new float needle in and clened it and checked float level ,all is good . I put new brass fuel inlet into carb ,still smell gas. I shut gas off before putting in garage and run till engine stops . I am getting ready to tear the carb off and check or rebuild again . i saw this great video and now wonder if maybe I am getting a leak where overflow tube goes into bowl like you just had on your video. I am going to check it out . Thanks for your great videos.

Which epoxy did you seal the fix with? The idea of epoxy mingling with gasoline makes me nervous since carbs can be sensitive. But you think that's alright to do?
JB Weld brother. I worked at the Cadillac dealer back in the 80s and when we rebuilt Rochester carburetors, we would seal up the plugs with JB Weld while we were in there. The plugs were holes the factory used to dril out the fuel circuits and were known to leak over time so we epoxy them while doing a standard rebuild.

that' it was my problem too thought it was a needle/seat issue but it runs fine and even with fuel off it makes a mess, thank you! just wonder if JB weld might be better?
that's a good problem to drill down on and solve..but parts a pretty cheap to just replace the bowl once identified as an issue...unless of course parts are no longer available...i dont understand the brass outer sheathing on the over flow tube...was that simple to add sstrenght? it looked longer than the stock overflor tube anyway...also will the eopxy hold up to gasoline for years? or will that fix need to be redone every year?

Hello, I wanted to know what the epoxy you used for this was? I have a carburetor leaking from one of the side inlet panels and am searching for the best sealant to use on it.
If you can't solder it, Alcolin Solderlene cold solder is another option. It's fuel resistant and would sort this out. Not sure if it's available in the US though.
Cool, I will google it and check it out. Thanks for sharing. Have you Subscribed yet to never miss a video? Have you seen the video playlists th-cam.com/users/conleybuiltplaylists ? I like the idea of putting the sleeve over the standpipe....But, I think the JB Weld will eventually soften when soaking in gasoline. Did you verify that the JB Weld did not soften?
Thank you for subbing...I've taken carbs apart that the JB weld has both worked and not. As I can't tell of the varibles of fuel and proper JB application, I would suggest you try it on some scrap and soak int fuel to test your work and fuel type. Make sense? I recall the day I learned this and it was an epic save over the years since...May you have the same success! Please say thanks and “high five us here: www.paypal.me/how2wrench

These overflow tubes will crack or split. I fix mine with Shrink Tubbing. Use the smallest diameter tubbing that will just slide over the tube then use heat gun.

1st thank you for the vid a forum I was just on said floats weren't adjustable or commonly fixable (by like average peeps wit average tools). On the top of the carb there is a screw on cap with a spring loaded around the I Becleve they call it the needle that is operated by pushing the accelerator. Does the needle get stuck and or get out of position? Any technique to return it to normal?

Mine would leak only when opened slightly to drain . There is o-ring on it that I improved to stop leak to help measure bowl gas level. End of screw is a blunt end that I believe pinches off drain, you could inspect and clean that. Easy enough to pull out.

He couldn't screen these requests fast enough... He has a few other tricks up his sleeve he plans on making videos on. If you need help sooner choose and option below! That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily! He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones. There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. No , the fuel in flat bowl will slosh around but it has a small opening around the needle jet to get towards intake area . Not very much fuel should splash up past
shane conley Oh awesome. I'm wondering if gas could affect or break down JB over time, or if this is more of a temporary fix? I'm also wondering if the volume of the new drain tube and JB Weld would cause the motor to run more lean (due to less fuel in the bowl), or would the float simply adjust for the change in volume?

seeing as this is off a multi carb bike, no, BUT, it will leak gasoline so long as the petcock is not in the off position. in my opinion, even on a single carb bike, it would not prevent starting, however your MPG would be terrible

You rock! I have been racking my brain trying to diagnose my overflow problem... it was the bowl itself.

Hi Greg. I offer full service carb rebuilding and repair if you're interested. My number is below.

I cleaned and adjusted the float height 5 times but nothing happened still leaking.. Until I saw this video it might be the solution.. Thank yo

Awesome. Thanks for the tip. Now I just have to remember which carburetor I was working on four years ago.😆@@williamcarr3976
Yes, master I agree.. Which epoxy do you recommend? I've yet to find one that will hold up under/against the flow of the petrol..

that' it was my problem too thought it was a needle/seat issue but it runs fine and even with fuel off it makes a mess, thank you! just wonder if JB weld might be better?
that's a good problem to drill down on and solve..but parts a pretty cheap to just replace the bowl once identified as an issue...unless of course parts are no longer available...i dont understand the brass outer sheathing on the over flow tube...was that simple to add sstrenght? it looked longer than the stock overflor tube anyway...also will the eopxy hold up to gasoline for years? or will that fix need to be redone every year?
Mine typically starts out as a slow leak then builds to leaking like crazy after riding for a bit.

mine doesn't leak sitting but if I shake the nerfbars up and down it and It leaks a bit any answers think it's the float
this should fix one of my problems thanks.
I will probably still have fuel leaking out of my overflow tube into the filters making my fuel air mix too rich.

Frankie Marchese, my 03 WR250F does the same thing. Did yours get fixed?
Hello, I wanted to know what the epoxy you used for this was? I have a carburetor leaking from one of the side inlet panels and am searching for the best sealant to use on it.
If you can't solder it, Alcolin Solderlene cold solder is another option. It's fuel resistant and would sort this out.
Not sure if it's available in the US though.
Cool, I will google it and check it out. Thanks for sharing.

Superb
But whats missing is a
Important part !
How to Remove the cracked old
Tube and what size and source
For the new tube ?????
❤09/07/1962 aniel larry took Small Engine Repair in High School 😊
I've always just used heat shrink tubing. I've done at least 5 carbs now with same issue and 2 of them are on my 84 Suzuki gs1100gk and I've ridden it for 9 years now and still no leaks. Just cheap ole shrink tube from harbor freight.
Wow such great detailed info. Thanks for adding your expertise! I would have never thought shrink tubing would hold up to fuel. Worth an investigation!

I like the idea of putting the sleeve over the standpipe....But, I think the JB Weld will eventually soften when soaking in gasoline. Did you verify that the JB Weld did not soften?
I will subscribe to your page here...Craig
Thank you for subbing...I've taken carbs apart that the JB weld has both worked and not. As I can't tell of the varibles of fuel and proper JB application, I would suggest you try it on some scrap and soak int fuel to test your work and fuel type. Make sense? I recall the day I learned this and it was an epic save over the years since...May you have the same success!

These overflow tubes will crack or split. I fix mine with Shrink Tubbing. Use the smallest diameter tubbing that will just slide over the tube then use heat gun.

My carb is dry as a bone but the float bowl is leaking all over. Could it be just dirt in the fuel bowl?

You change the gasket on the screw.
Any technique to return it to normal?

so you got a leak inside the carb, could be the O ring on the pilot jet if you got one of those, maybe the float isnt working properly, just take it out and clean the entire thing and check to make sure that all the parts work mate, if you dont want to do that, buy a new one? lol
Did you fix it yet ...sounds like its overflowing inside ...float set too high ...
Good luck..

PTFE tape.
Mine would leak only when opened slightly to drain . There is o-ring on it that I improved to stop leak to help measure bowl gas level. End of screw is a blunt end that I believe pinches off drain, you could inspect and clean that. Easy enough to pull out.
can a Honda nsr be repaired in the same way ? ours leaks as soon as we turn the fuel tap on

@@How2Wrench @ 4:05 you had the tube out ...and the tech was heating it up in the coffee can...
@@jerryking1434 That tube was not out, It's a new tube going over the existing damaged "cracked" one.
What does he mean by anbiant temperature does that mean dramatic temp change becuase my carb just started doing this and the day before it was 80 degrees now its 63 and chillie

You need to adjust your float
So it must be ok to use jb weld epoxy inside carb?
Yes it is. That is what i am going to use.

superb sir.
are you using water or fuel to test? If fuel, is there fuel alternative (working at home to fix my car - i would prefer not to have gas fumes around)?
rubbing alcohol. wear gloves.
Would that leak keep gas from being vacuum into the engine
I'm the intern studying under Shane. He's on his way overseas to train techs and not here to ask in person. We are pretty good at answering and didn't want you to miss connecting with him directly.
I fInally made it to your comment going down the list...just an FYI...he literally logs in and answers member questions daily! Consider joining...best $1.99 you'll spend this month 😁
One of these days I hope to move from the office to the shop! Wish I knew the answer but don't want to bs you.
Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it!
Make it a great day!

Good fault diagnosis tips. You could use solder rather than epoxy? Locktite another option. Also it would be good to use some soft grip protectors in that vice when clamping aluminium.....

Please help me understand, when a running bike hits a pot hole or something like a bump, what happens inside the carburetor? Doesn't the fuel splash into the venturi?
We sent you his contact info on the other comment...
Have you seen our "TH-cam Trained Support Shirts? Great way to "high five us" goodfellasmerch.com/collections/how-2-wrench/products/support-shirt
No , the fuel in flat bowl will slosh around but it has a small opening around the needle jet to get towards intake area . Not very much fuel should splash up past
What is the bowl made of?
aluminum, it would be dumb to make it out of steel and too expensive to make it out of titanium.
Mine leaks on the drain screw. How was that fixed?
Awesome. I found my new favorite channel.
Any insight on what epoxy was used?
Good old JB Weld!
shane conley Oh awesome. I'm wondering if gas could affect or break down JB over time, or if this is more of a temporary fix? I'm also wondering if the volume of the new drain tube and JB Weld would cause the motor to run more lean (due to less fuel in the bowl), or would the float simply adjust for the change in volume?
@@How2Wrench Great, thank you, and take care!
What kind of epoxy do you need

seeing as this is off a multi carb bike, no, BUT, it will leak gasoline so long as the petcock is not in the off position. in my opinion, even on a single carb bike, it would not prevent starting, however your MPG would be terrible
didnt it booger the jet by hammering the socket on it looks burred up??
