Sorry, rules are rules. If you can inflict status effects on bosses it's automatically a good RPG.

My biggest complaint was how ridiculously huge late-game dungeons are. Combined with the encounter rate, plus difficulty makes the end game super slow unless you grind levels. Even then it’s slow. Oh, and the bingo game is rigged. Burn that place down!
The wars are a nice addition, but a little lackluster. Imagine if the war system was even a quarter of what other Koei games were. I get that there are limitations, but it’s still a little upsetting wondering what might have been.

The battle music is actually one of my favorite battle themes. I've played it since high school and have absolutely had a blast every time. Especially because of the randomness of the npcs and the strategy map evolution.

6:57: But remember, it has to be the one-use Sleep Bomb. The Sleep spell doesn't work on enemies "immune" to magic. You'll need Dizzy for that.
9:28 isn't true at all from what I could tell. How other NPCs get along with you is static throughout the game, and they pay no attention to the allies in your party in their "travel" actions. Just you. Recruiting someone being chased by another character results in their travel action resetting to going home.
I took my guide down from Gamefaqs a little under a year ago. There's already a video LP that references it heavily.

    • @JasonGravesPoser

The MSX version has different characterization for some of the characters (particularly the second to last boss). The battle view is from behind the characters as opposed to the side. The battle sprites are more detailed, though there is only one background (all black, much like the original Final Fantasy). Finally, there is more musical variety. The training dungeons in the MSX version have different dungeon music as well as a different battle theme. The only dungeon music you hear in the SNES version is only used in the opening cave as well as the optional dungeons in the MSX version. Also, there is a unique dungeon theme in the cave to Mt. Hiei, which is considerably more epic than the same old dungeon theme used in the SNES version. Overall, they did a mediocre job when porting this game to the SNES, and the sound chip was used horribly. (Edit to add: Forgot to mention that the war battles are a little different. The battle map is zoomed in and Blaze spreads out across four tiles as opposed to three. I can't speak for the other spells since that's the only one I used in the battles)

I will respectfully fight you (over this game). This is one of the most creative SNES games ever. A CIB at Gamestop cost 5 dollars in 2004 and it probably costs less now haha but this game is fantastic it has quirks. But I am so confident in this game, I posted this before a minute into this.
Also why does everytime I go to post Sears is in my history. I haven't watched that yet. Freaking bug.

Owned, played, and loved it when it came out, still own it today (complete) .... Always loved my JRPGs. Guess that makes my name "no one" Didnt mention the gambling game, or getting to lvl 7 before leaving the first dungeon (changes the story), or the fact that you wouldn't want a time skip because you only have so many years in game to beat it, or you age out and lose =) (yes, you cannot do everything in this game in one playthrough, you get to old to win)

Dude. I remember I was with a buddy at a resale store in '95 or '96. We were like ten years old. I saw it and begged my friend to buy it. I started playing it with my friend. I thought what the hell is this crap (because of the 8 bit graphics). But after playing a bit, I was sucked into the mechanics. This is actually one of my favorite RPGs. I started to follow Koei quite a bit. I also ran across Uncharted Waters New Horizons from my brother. Honestly, Koei had great original gameplay and strategy. It's just hard to get past the sucky graphics.
About Inindo. They should have included a way to conquer all of Japan in the war map. And fix how crappy and weak all other ninja are besides you. It's too stressful to play with the story characters because of that. So basically the best team is having a swordsman (warrior) and a sage (healer).

What is the criteria for a game to be on the list? I'm assuming it had to have an NTSC release?

Yeah i definitely know a few that are missing. I noticed mainly because you can play all of the first 6 Wizardry games on snes, and then there are franchises like the glory of heracles, or last bible 3. I reckon I could probably double the list for you and make you regret starting haha.

I owned it when I was a kid and teenager. I think I last played it when I was twelve. While I like the concept this is pretty low on my favorite Koei games list. On the SNES its below Romance of the Three Kingdoms III and IV (I haven't played II in so long, and only played it a couple of times so I don't remember it clearly enough to rate), Nobunaga's Ambition II, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, Liberty or Death, Genghis Khan II, and the first two PTO games plus several of their NES games I prefer as well.
