As an Alaskan, the commercial fisheries are a thing of huge contention up here. On one hand, the economy needs the jobs. On the other, the current bycatch laws allow fisheries to take a massive chunk of the fish coming into the copper river. The boats can fill up on Kings, but locals are limited to one or two per year depending on fish and game.
Yep that's some intelligent American policy right there. I guess I better start eating as much King Salmon as I can before theyre gone a decade or two.
I'm guessing the reason would be cause of taxes. Commercialy your are required to pay up taxes wich supposedly will create programs to help back the fish. Doing it for personal use will not.. and you know some people will just sell tons of fish without reporting.
"We want to give the fish a fair chance" lmao - don't be fooled, if fish and game didn't set boundaries 99% of these commercial fisherman would be jousting for position at the mouth of the river. Those with a conscience would be broke and put out of business
There is nothing wrong with setting up at the mouth as the fish caught there would be the best State law, not unelected bureaucrats, should instead set limits on how much can be caught and what must be thrown back
The government does research and determines an estimate of how many salmon or other fish there are in the body of water being fished and then determine a percentage that can be fished from there
You just keep fishing until you can't catch any, then go further away from land to try to catch more, fail and protest on the streets. At least this is how it used to be done
it's some bloody annoying maths but you can calculate the "regeneration" rate of the fish amd basically you need to let enough breeding fish survive ao that the population is sustainable. If it were purely % based the fish stocks would collapse. if you google fish stock calculation or something it'll probably show up.
A question was asked that linked to this episode. It asked why Copper river salmon are so good. Considered the best in the world by some. Simple, a good marketing strategy and because the public is generally speaking ignorant of the truth. So I'm not saying the Copper has bad fish. Not at all. The Copper has great environmental conditions and some good bloodlines. But it's mostly a good advertising campaign. Like when companies call Chinook "Kings". I won't go on about this any further because most folks will never know anything other than the farm raised Atlantic salmon they mostly eat. Damm I'm glad I catch my own salmon. 😋🐟🎣
@@RiggedBananaGaming catching your own is great. But there are definitely differences in taste with the different salmon species. I just found out they updated our Sockeye run on the Columbia to about 500,000 and they are still passing through the lower river so you all can guess what I'll be doing the next several days. 😉 🎣🐟👍
Well done video. That said the Chinook from the Copper river are great. But not the best in the world. That title belongs to the spring Chinook that run on the mighty Columbia River. The distances they will travel are in excess of the 300 miles on the Copper. However the numbers on the Copper exceed what is left of the run on the Columbia. The Copper empties into Bristol Bay, one of the last huge salmon runs left in Alaska. Fyi, "Kings" are a nickname. Chinook are what these mighty fish are actually called. Have a great day. 😃
@@robbiemize actually thanks for the heads up on this. I was correct in where I thought the Copper river is. But I've had the location on Bristol Bay incorrectly all this time. I don't often make mistakes like that. I do understand they expect another record breaking harvest of Sockeye in Bristol this year. Hmmm, love Sockeye.
They die after breeding . I live in the Interior Of BC Canada and we have a great local place that you can see the Spawning , it’s a place that is attended by many and lots of schools go as well .
If you didn't push right up against official regulations, you'd find that the fishing improved. There was a lobster fishery that was failing, all the fishermen got together and implemented stricter measures and improved the pots to favor the lobsters. In a few years the fishery was booming.
Will one day come to Alaska and get me some fresh salmon just like that! BTW I just saw a three stars and a sun logo by the boat's window. Are you by chance Filipino or know a Filipino? Just curious hahaha!
Skeena river sockeye in British Columbia actually have higher fat content then cooper river sockeye… we had American biologists come to our test site and sample them
Copper River are superior. Spent 70s & 80s fishing out of Ilwaco WA. When I caught my first you got 3 a day any type. Then it was 2 then 1 then certain days only and now only clipped fish born raised in fish farms
Yes. Over 50% of fish spawning are allowed to go spawn. It’s an art what fish and game does. Alaska takes sustainability of these Waters very seriously
As an Asian I am so jealous of that beautiful mustache lol
Lol
Bro, I feel you on that. Man is rocking that stache hard too.
Try dermarolling your mustache
You don''t need to be Asian to be jealous of it. It's magnificent regardless of race.
WTF?!
I love Copper River salmon, but what I really want right now is to see another, longer, fishing trip with Kyle Lee.
This guy's enthusiasm is so wholesome, I'd love to work for him
Can't explain my excitement when I sat down with my food and unexpectedly saw a new Dan Does 🥰
My man Kyle Lee! Glad to see you are having much success brother. Need to get out there to Alaska and help you catch some Salmon.

LOVE DAN DOES, CAN DAN PLEASE DO MORE DAN DOES?

At this point Dan knows how to do a little bit of everything lol
*EATER CHANNEL IS LIFE!* 🔥
It is just one Salmon Fish that was caught that day but you could tell the pride and joy his jobs gives him!!!
This is beautiful!!!🤍🤍🤍
Alaska looks so beautiful
How exactly do fishers determine how much salmon they can sustainably fish?
The government does research and determines an estimate of how many salmon or other fish there are in the body of water being fished and then determine a percentage that can be fished from there
It's significantly more complicated than that but that is the general idea
You just keep fishing until you can't catch any, then go further away from land to try to catch more, fail and protest on the streets. At least this is how it used to be done
I learned something like this in calculus 1. There’s a curve u have to maximize or minimize and that value is… it’s something I forgot how it worked.

the copper river does not empty into Bristol Bay... 😕. That being said, the Columbia salmon are divine, I agree with that.
Don't forget the Fraser River in Canada. We have the Stuart River sockeye run that travels over 1200 km from the ocean to their spawning grounds

Good to see another Alaskan representing here. I’m only 8 hours away. 🤣

Although there was only one Salmon caught this was pretty cool to watch.
Awesome fishing and great outdoors
Dan's amazing!!! LFG
Kyle is utterly stunning!!!
1:47 the sticker on the back, is it Philippines flag inspired 3 star single sun?
They intercept the fish on their way to spawn. Great work. Very sustainable to not let the fish you rely on breed.
LOL
How dumb and cruel does this sound?
What an intresting video. Really enjoyed it.
Alaskan Cod looked so gooooooood!
See the lure snagged in the adipose fin @:28
I might be the only one you doesn't like salmon 😂 Maybe its because I have been eating farmed salmon
Pacific salmon is great, not the farmed color added fish you find most of the time

How long were the fishing nets? The fact that they had a poor catch , may have something to do with the length of the nets
That moustache though...

They need to leave more fish left in the wild and create salmon fish farms . Make areas where we increase their numbers
I dont know anything about fish so i got a about popping a gill does is hurt the fish or does he instanly die while popping a gill?
The fish just pops locks and drops it. It’s all Gucci baby
“Thank you for showing how to cath one fish”
Thought gill nets were illegal?
Man I got a question what does fresh cut salmon look
I can imagine only just a few decades ago those waters were swarming with Salmon, now in a whole day he caught.. one.
I suspect it is on the back end of the fishing season or else you would have seen a lot boats jockeying for net space
If they filmed it in the last month, the runs were just about to start but not hitting yet. End of June is when it gets crazy.
Go up to Bristol bay next year, you’ll see some real salmon fishing.
Filipino represented.
