We interviewed friends and family who lives in KL to get a better understanding on the true cost of living in Kuala Lumpur as a local resident. From the data, we built 2 profiles to present you a very real and true cost of living.
We also went on the ground to give you food, shopping, transportation and accommodation prices. Everything for you to make your own decision on whether or not KL is truly more expensive than the other states in Malaysia.
All prices provided in this video is in Malaysian Ringgit.

Very nice video, thank you. It was organized, I always like to see things in map and I am glad you showed it in the beginning of the video. We plan to move to Malaysia in few years and I am looking into all infos. Only thing I am finding rare in Malaysia is single story houses, which is very common in USA, especially in texas and other mid and southern states. We also do not like to pay HOA fees( or high maintenance fee). May be best would be renting first. Thank you again for the very informative video.
You are most welcome! Yes, we highly recommend renting in Malaysia (doesn't matter which state). Just rent as you will habe flexibility and abundant of choice
I am an Indian Grass Cutter working with DBKL. I cannot survive in KL or surrounding area. Even Gormen do not give any money. I earn about RM2.350 per month and do private work in the weekends for Big TowKay Man or Anak Lord. The cost of living is up and up. MY depends on imported food all year round. Meat is out of the question, Fish forget it. Chicken is once a week and our dinner table has very little food. Thank God for subsidized rice in MY. Salaries is MY is very low and out productivity is hopeless. Owning a car is like throwing your money in the Bin. Being Frugal is important. If I can afford more capital equipment for grass cutting from Germany. I can do better. No loans to B40 and low earners. Not complaining but with the right equipment - efficiencies will be higher. Foreigners think MY Is paradise. It is HOT. HOT and getting HOTTEER . plus MORE and MORE Rain every day and Humidity is terrible. Most Chinese CHABUT to OZ by sending their children to study there.

KL is not a cheap city to live in if one's earning capacity is not high.
Foreigners think it's paradise because while they can't survive/ retire in their own country, they chose Malaysia because of their currency, USD to MYR, AUD to MYR, GBP to MYR.
my workplace is full of them and they refuse to go back to their home country cuz in their homecountry they're bordering b40/ m40. Once they moved here or to other developing country, suddenly they become t20, buying properties, and sending kids to international school

For Malaysians we can buy the Govt sponsored transport fare of My50 where we top up our I/C with RM50 for 30days transportation. We can use all the public transports for RM1.00 the whole day.

KL/Selangor is actually a high income area since 2010 (If I'm not mistaken Klang Valley alone GDP per capita is at least US$20,000 now higher than the national average of US$13,000) so, that's why the pay is significantly higher not just in Malaysia and within ASEAN.

Hi miss. I used to work at klcc. All u need to do is chop some veg, put inside a container & eat it with the food at wisma central, while u're having lunch.
That food court at klcc is obviously 4 tourists who don't know where else to go. If u eat over there frequently, u'll be poor & be conned into thinking that u need to dedicate 1,200+ for food per month, like in their video claiming u need at least 6k per month to survive in kl.

Me too! Same situation. Hawaii has gotten insanely expensive. A condo easily costing 700k with a high HOA. Food and gas getting higher and higher

Fascinated with KL but the high degree of car dependency may be a red line for me, i really hate driving 😅 thank you for the unvarnished perspective, so many expat TH-camrs seem to have a specific lifestyle not representative of what regular folks experience is. If you live in the heart of KL, it is possible to do without a car. You can take the train system or taxis readily available.

Malaysia is a multi lingual country. English, Bahasa Malaysia is widely spoken. Mandarin and Cantonese is also spoken by many.
Surprising how high those living expenses for a single young adult per month, as especially commute by car. Even though I don't own a car and have cheaper rent, I still find 40% chances of saving money per month a challenge.
KL cost of living isn't cheap, especially food and transportation when owning a car. Plus the moment one buys any imported item, thanks to the weak Ringgit, it is expensive

EPF is compulsory deducted of you are below 60 years which is of 9% of your total salary divided into monthly equal deductions. Apart from that they have 2 diffrent taxes based on your salary bracket. Also could you please tell me if you have relocated to Malaysia by now?

Renting or buying? Wasn't sure if your RM500 was referring to RM500 rental which is definitely very low or RM500k to purchase one, which in this case, depending on location may still be possible
not possible unless you want to live in a shared room in a rat rotten public housing building
at minimum a 1 bedroom one bath that isn’t shared would be at least 1K in kl/selangor area
there are lots of shared apartments for certain religions and genders like female only /female only Muslim or Muslim only and etc for rm 700 and below you should be looking at subang/pj/shah alam area in general
you could also look into apartments around puchong and cyberjaya where rm 600 and below for a 1 bedroom 1 bath is possible

Yeah, if you go by the numbers we laid out, you both can live a comfortable life in Malaysia

No, DIDI is not available in Malaysia. There is Grab for transport and Grab Food, Food Panda, Shopee Food for food deliveries

How's the healthcare and government AID in Malaysia? I have some family there from my mom's side of the family. I was doing well financially here in The US, but the problem is once your health goes downhill, you're at risk of becoming homeless. The cost of living does seem reasonable in KL compared to California. I'm currently back in college for medical billing and coding. I was looking up medical billing and coding jobs in KL and they pay more than many of the jobs in California. LOL The irony. Sometimes more developed countries aren't better when it comes to making a living.
Healthcare in Malaysia is actually very good. In fact, some Singaporeans, Indonesians to name a couple of countries flock to Malaysia to do surgeries and other treatment. Unless one is Malaysian, then one is not eligible for govt aid. For Malaysians, the govt hospitals are very good and they provide top notch medicines and what do the Malaysians pay? A very low fee, usually less than RM10 for consultation
@@corporatebreakoutcouple actually, foreigners who are married to Malaysians are eligible to use government hospital or govt-aided healthcare. I'm over 60 and married to an Australian but have settled here in Malaysia for many years. A recent health scare caused my husband to be warded at a public hospital. He was well-taken care of and the bill came to a 'staggering' almost nil!! We paid a bit for his medication. Truly so grateful for the government to subsidise healthcare in this country. For pensioners like I am, we can only afford public hospitals as private medical insurance would be to high.

How's about a single person that retires in KL? Is $1,5000 U.S. dollars a month enough?
With the current exchange rate, you would be getting almost RM7000. Definitely enough to live in KL comfortably but not luxuriously.

Guys why Malay Chinese and Indian English sound so different in Malaysia with Indians speaking best.
Malaysians are multi lingual. So how well they speak English depends on the family background on which mother tongue do they speak at home.
