    • @corporatebreakoutcouple
      @corporatebreakoutcouple  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Edmund! Yes, each person has different costs tied to their lives. Hence budgeting for these items is needed. We go back to Singapore quite frequently as well and the tickets are priced into our budget when we plan. That being said, there are several ways to make a trip to Sg and if one plans early, the costs are manageable.

    • @hann659

      1 day of accommodation in Singapore already costs 100 SGD minimum (cheapest Geylang hotel if you can stand it, cheap mixed rice). 10 days will be equivalent to an extra 1 month of expenses in Penang.
      If going to Singapore often is necessary, it is better to stay in southern Johor..... Then the Singapore accomodation costs can be mostly eliminated.

Wondering how many (average) people in Penang have that amount upon retiring.

    For foreign viewers, purchase of property needs to be min $1m myr onwards & take note property tax for higher end condos & monthly maintenance are not cheap. Another critical requirement which is visa, the current MM2H visa requirements is Onerous. S-mm2h visa currently stipulates visa holders can only resides in Sarawak & not in West Msia that includes Penang. As for Digital Nomad, it is not easy to get & maximum is for 2yrs. Not the best visa in my opinion to plan for retirement in msia on. Msia is a nice country for social visits & short term stays. For retirement (foreigners), i am afraid the ship had sailed since the ridiculous MM2H had been revised in 2021. And god knows when they will revise the rules again. They seems to have a trend of revising rules & terms as & when they like. Smm2h visa is another recent shock for applicants. Many applied recently thinking it allows them to stay in West Msia but end up now this loophole being closed. 😢

    • @jaxd7206
      @jaxd7206 ปีที่แล้ว

      In your experience and opinion, do you think it's feasible to stay in the country on a tourist visa and leave after 3 months? Is it possible to do so indefinitely or there's some kind of limit put forth so you can't get in the country after a certain amount of visits?

    • @erictiong8575
      @erictiong8575 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaxd7206 hi Jax, i cannot say with certainty if Visa runs will work out. Ie: u stay in Msia for 80+ days & fly out for a period of time (few days, weeks or months?) & return back.
      I used to reside in JB on a 30days tourist visa from 2015-2020 (covid forced me back to SG). All was good all the way till 2018 when New PM Dr Mahathir came into power & cancelled the MACS visa that i was on. Immediately thereafter i have issues with immigration.
      I was nearly barred re-entry & thus i changed my daily commuting lifestyle btw JB & SG to balancing 59/50(JB/SG) commute. Ie: stay JB few days & stay sg few days & applied for mm2h visa (late 2018). Unfortunately mm2h visa was rejected in 2019 along with 90%+ applicants. Re-applied in early 2020 after change of govt but program got suspended in 3Q 2020 & visa application was returned.
      MM2H was restarted in 3Q 2021. But the new requirements were crazy & i could not qualify for it. Now back to your original Qn, will visa run works? For my case, it did not. I was nearly barred re-entry & had on few occasions got myself stuck at ICQ for up to an hour being interrogated & berated like a criminal. It is certainly not fun… sad to say i earn in SG & spend in msia & invested in both properties & business (as a partner) but not exactly able to stay in Msia with piece of mind (visa). Im keeping fingers crossed 🤞🏻 with another new govt in place, mm2h could be revised to more palatable terms.

      Travelling overseas is rare for them. Most either stay in Penang and hardly travel or travel within Malaysia. It is common for Malaysians to hold large amounts of credit card debt & pay monthly minimum sum. That being said, there are high income earners in Malaysia as well. In Penang, there are many MNCs in tech, manufacturing which set up business and factories there. The banking industry is pretty robust as well.

      For me at age 60, retired used to live in Singapore, double everything (2X) in this video and add in luxuries , high end makan , your own travel and hobby entertainments. Penang has good medical facilities. Need to check out immigration requirements for long term stay. Crime rate is "tolerable". Penang Island is NOT a clean city (horrible toilets, kids are thought how to use dirty toilets in school) city council facilities are "slack", third and half world facilities. All people are great with a chinese majority. English are spoken. Environment? beautiful but unkept and unclean beaches with dirty untreated river outlets. Big issues with traffic , mostly bad infrastructure with practically no public transportation. Food is good only if get to the right places. All goods need to be transport up to the island (cost). There is an inadequate airport with mimum international flights. Summary, cost and lifestyle overall, is better then other comparable cities with 1m residents in the other ASEAN countries.

    Are apartments/ condominiums leasehold like in U.K.? Are they leasehold? In U.K. apartments/ refer to as flats are 99 years lease. When it falls to below 80years you have to pay a premium ( can be big amount) to renew. Leasehold are going to be banned in U.K.
    That’s why people prefer to buy houses in U.K.

    • @corporatebreakoutcouple
      @corporatebreakoutcouple  ปีที่แล้ว

      In Malaysia, it is a mix of freehold and leasehold for condos and apartments. Leaning towards more freehold.
      For houses, it is usually freehold. There are some low cost units and that's usually owned by the state, as there needs to be an income threshold for one to purchase those.

      Prices in Johor Bahru is very high due to the huge influx of people working in Singapore but living in JB and also the Singaporeans going over. Salaries in Johor are nowhere near Penang's and definitely 30-40% less than KL's. Penang's salary for white collar workers is still manageable for daily expenses but if one is not careful, one will just live paycheck to paycheck

    I find that the cost of living is very high if you don't convert! Wonder how the Malaysians survive???

    • @corporatebreakoutcouple
      @corporatebreakoutcouple  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We are talking about survivability, yes? As long as one works, drives a local car, cooks at home mostly with the occasional hawker food, no overseas travel, very rare restaurant dining, one is able to survive. Petrol prices are subsidised, some basic necessities are also price controlled by the govt for the sake of the low income earners, but enjoyed by all citizens.
      But yes, cost of living in Malaysia is high, against their earned income. The Ringgit is weakening against a lot of currencies, which makes imported products very expensive. The moment one steps out of Malaysia to travel, it is extremely expensive as well.
      Who are the ones most affected? It is the middle class. The rich are rich enough to not let these hurt their lifestyle, but the middle class are being squeezed with inflation, rising cost of living, stagnant wages. In Malaysia, the middle class are slowly being pushed to being lower middle, the upper middle are becoming middle.
