I decided against going fulltime. I make way to much money in my fulltime job as a heavy equipment mechanic in Alaska and I only work 5-6 months in the summer construction season. Come fall I jump right into my hobby. Just sold a 1K knife, don’t need the money but I put it right back into my hobby!!
My favorite part of the whole video was your words of wisdom. I feel the same way about undervaluing your own time and effort just so you can make sales. If the work is worth the money, people will eventually buy. Make money other ways in the meantime.
I had two questions, one, what do you do about flash rust on your high carbon hand rubbed blades and two, what speed were you grinding at, it sounded at a pretty slow rpm. Thank you!

I am a huge fan of your work and the philosifies you bring......Please wear safety glasses when you run the wire wheel......I never did till last year when a single wire peice shot through my right eye .....in the white part through the lense and out the back into my scull.......three surgeries later I was lucky and ended up with 20/20 due to a new lense and and amazing surgeon. Dam it got real very fast and you never forget that moment when you reach up and feel only an 1/8th of an inch of wire sticking out of your eye that is two and a half inches long!!!!!!!!!
You are the man.......we will all continue to enjoy your content as long as you give it to us sir

Don't stop rambling. I am working my ass off to get rid of my IT job so I can have my fitness business and make stuff on the side. I'd rather work 80 hours for myself than 40 for someone else.

I also own my own business, and the couple of pieces of advice I got when I first started that are still with me after almost 10 years: 1) do the right thing for the customer, and the money will come. Kinda like "I wouldn't make cheaper knives, I'd get a job and do this at night". 2) Never sell out of your own pocketbook -- just because I couldn't afford something doesn't mean I shouldn't sell it. 3) It's your business -- have the customers you want, not the ones you need, and FIRE the ones that waste your time. I feel like you just applied an Aloha mentality to those three pieces of advice, and I love it.
Wise thoughts.. would love not to be one of those who makes couple of people rich.. but have to do it for now.. maybe one day i can do what i want and not what i have to

I turn boxes and bowls on my wood lathe. People ask me to make certain things and I politely tell them no. I explain that I turn wood for my personal joy and for no other reason. If people want to buy what I make, that's great. If they didn't, I would still be turning.
Seriously, thank you, ive had a hard time grinding knives that are forged to shape and super thin. Seeing you take smaller bites with the grinder really changed my perception of how to grind. Again, thank you.

That carbide belt dressing tool seams like a good idea but I can’t find it on Amazon or in a Google search
I just use a scrap/broken peace of carbide from an old file guide. Incase you had one of those lying around, it would do the trick too.

I design and build high performance engines and sometimes the whole car. My clients ask for an engine, and I ask for a credit card. During COVID it was tough, but now......6 to 8 months a client will recieve my work of art. You give great advice. Thanks for sharing!

ment to say the safety glasses with side guards sir........my wire slipped in over the bridge of my nose .......sounds rediculas but the side guard extra protection type is needed......I know I know you are wearing glasses but it is a life changing event....worth the uncomfortable type with all the edge guards

If you coat the blade with Layout fluid between grits, you can see when all your grinder scratches are out. Admittedly Not the best for Brut de forge as you have layout fluid on it. (only do this when wearing a resporator as you should not inhale the stuff used in layout fluid)
one thing i never see mentioned on how to hand polish is How hard to you press on the steel? i prefer to not put a lot of pressure on the stick (but i alsu use a lot smaller sanding stick made of bone with a bit of leather glued to it that is 1 inch wide, and 2 inches long for tip to tang polish then i use a 1 inch 3 inch for edge to tang....no special reason i used bone i just had some and decided to make a sanding stick from it) i dont press down very hard...mainly because if i do it will twist the sanding stick but also because I let the tool do its job. in theory you would end up Fracturing the grit of paper using a lot of force. i also like to use Canola oil to wet sand as its cheap, does not rust the blade, does not smell, and is not hazardous to inhale (unless your allergic) and will still carry the steel dust from the sandpaper, giving you a bit longer worktime...but the trade off is you do have to wipe it away now and then but that the same with any form of wet sanding.
😱NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! you're never going to get an amazing polish if the scratches are always going in the same direction!!!!!!!!, that will give you a nice velvet polish, but you're going to get a perfect mirror polish. As you go up the grits alternate the direction, going tip to tang after machine polishing. Then after dipping it in ferric for about 30 seconds between each grit as this will let you more easily see the older polishing scratches and will also let you see the hamon if you were trying for one) you switch to going edge to spine going until the tip-to-tang scratches are out, then you, alternate going tip to tang. for a more dulled velvet polish, you go edge to spine, for a mirror polish you end by going tip to tang. i have gotten mirror polish at 800 grit by using this and I will put my money where my mouth is.
I am Gungyver on Reddit I have a post on bladesmithing Reddit called 'My Latest finished blade and Mirror at 800 grit.' Note its only the first picture that is at just 800 grit as i did some etching, buffing, and steel wool work to bring out the hamon after 800 grit. Speaking of longevity, raise that water bucket right up next to you so you dont have to bend sideways every time you dunk your blade. Such a simple thing and makes a huge difference, also it allows you not to have to reset your stance every time. I have a bucket of water on either side of my grinder so i dont have to move anywhere to cool the blade.

I got one question. Why do you grind the knife to the final shape after the heat treatment? Wouldn't it be better to grind the final shape when it's still soft to make it easier and prevent overheating?
Thin steel warps like crazy during heat treat.
