Thanks Charlie. Just changed mine using your method to break it loose. Sucker was tight for sure. You saved me a lot of struggles. 👍

I believe these overrun pulleys are for manuals only. My 997.1 Tiptronic appears to be a fixed style pulley and the online parts store label it as such. Happy wrenching 👍

While you have the belt off, check the three pulleys. They're supposed to spin but then stop fairly quickly. If they keep spinning they need to be replaced. BTW I'm sure it was no problem for you or most people, but I had a hell of a time unclipping that one electrical connection to the airbox. I still don't understand how squeezing the two sides is supposed to free it. Sure as hell didn't on mine.

You squeeze the back, not the sides and it pops right out

Diagnosed thanks to your description at the start, bought the tool thanks to your video and replaced thanks to your 'which way to turn to break it loose' explanation.
Great TH-cam video, thank you very much for posting :)
P.s. My god, you did bloody mean it when you said it was tight to release, I practically snapped my open ended 17mm spanner with the force required. I'm not sure I'd have dared apply that much force without your assurance on the direction!

did it fix the issue, or is the bearing still making the whining sound? I have that same issue and I'm not sure what to do..

Hey Lastiven - in my case it fixed it, but there is another explanation for a whine - especially when cold and immediately after startup. There is an airpump in the back left (its like a black box with a hose coming from it). Bearings inside of it can begin to make a squeal as they go back.
A quick test for this is to start the car, verify the noise is there, and then unplug the electrical connector to the air pump. If the squeal stops, you've narrowed down where it is coming from. Mine makes it intermittently (primarily in very cold weather) so I haven't replaced/repaired it yet. From what I've read, you have to replace the entire part, but a few people have disassembled theirs and replaced the bearings only. That is probably the route I'll take.

      charlieaf92 thanks!
I'm quite positive it's coming straight from the alternator. I've tried listening in thru a screwdriver to bridge between the alt-casing and my ear and the noise came straight thru. I'll try with the pulley first and if that doesn't work, I'll move in to the alternator

Sounds like a plan, the pulley is easier + cheaper to replace than the entire unit. One thing you could try is just removing the belt and spinning your alternator by hand. If it makes the noise, or feels particularly bad, then its probably bearings within the alt and not the overrun pulley.
