Thank you thank you, awesome video and this took me about 30 careful minutes instead of the 10+ hours it has taken many others on their course of discovery to achieve the same result.
Thanks dude. I was just about to trash it to do a carbon fiber skin of the horse shoe. After I could see from your video what actually held it together I ran a small drill from the backside of the clear plastic to partially take out the two tabs as they were stubborn. Worth mentioning that both parts come out the front with the metal first. You can then see another couple of plastic tags that hold the clear plastic in place easily.
This video just saved my life. Once you snap that plastic piece onto the metal one , it is NEVER coming off unless you damage it a bit. The clips are far too snug, you would need 4 tiny hands to actually pop it out. I ended up drilling out the plastic enough to just pop it off. The only downside is when you pull out device plugs it pulls the metal out with it a tiny bit. You can superglue this or fix some sort of harness to keep it in place if you really care. My device is a usb-port which never comes out so I am good. Thanks again for pointing out the clips! I thought I was doomed.
Really simple solution to getting the clear piece off if you have the piece out of the car already. Just place standing upright on a bench. Put light pressure on the clear outer ring. Whilst putting a little pressure on just one of the tabs to pop it out. Careful as it will give quickly and catch your fingers as it slides down. Very little pressure needed.
It is much easier than this. After removing black and green parts, looking at back of lighter turn the lighter body from 12oclock to 11oclock . Counter clockwise just a bit. Push lighter body forward about 1/2 an inch. It will then be able to turn back to original orientation. If not you are not deep enough in or too far. It does all this nice and smooth. Once back in 12oclock position it will simply push the rest of the way out. No fiddling with the clear piece. No parts broken. Clear piece does have to spring release clips and slides out easily as well.
This was very helpful - other videos on the matter don't demonstrate just how tricky this piece is. Like you, twisting the clear piece so I could get at the smaller clip was critical to getting the piece out. For getting the lighter shaft out I found putting it against my floor mat and pressing down on the face of the trim made it pop right out. In general I had to apply much more force with these plastic pieces than I expected. Anyway, thanks again.
Great video. I’m in the middle of taking apart and it’s identical on a Porsche Cayenne 2008. Just trying to get the clear and metal pieces apart. Let’s hope it will give!
Thank you! had it apart in 5 minutes following this. I was able to separate the clear plastic and main piece by pulling back on the main piece and pushing down on the clears clips through the front.
Nice vid....thanks for your time.........At the car I cannot remove the colored connectors...what is the trick to getting them off correctly? pinch...pull......??? I might just give up and do the entire replace from the car since I was able to un plug the cig adapter
I don't want to remove the whole cigarette assembly I just want to take the black plastic piece out of the metal and plastic piece - the part that has the picture of the lit cigarette. I pushed it down by mistake not realizing it's not going to pop right up.
basically a breakdown of a cigarette lighter and not at all how to remove it from the dash or even refit? thats 4 minutes ill never get back (even though i fel asleep 2 mins in)
I guess since you slept through 50% of the explanation you missed the part where I said remove the horseshoe, unhook the plugs from the switches, and remove the entire assembly from the car.
Man...thanks for taking the time to do all that work. Years later and this is still the only place to find this info.
You're welcome - thanks!

Thanks for this. Working on my 957! Same process. Used a little WD-40 to loosen metal cylinder from clear plastic as it was stuck tight!
Awesome - glad it helped!

The clear piece will pull right off. Squeeze it, right below the outer ring. Kind of like a childproof bottle; no screwdriver required.

Hey Jim, I can't remember. If you can send me a picture of the connectors it may help jog my memory. My email address is charlieaf92 at gmail.
04 boxster Just cut mine off with a electric. cut off grinder pushing the plastic tabs on the inside probably helped getting it apart thx
Is there a light bulb in there that lights up the surround?
I think so, but I can't remember for sure. Sorry!

Could not have taken out my lighter without this video. Thanks!

Thank you Sir for your video 🙏
