This Album was released in 1991, JP's Music was NOTHING like this in the 70's. When Rob "Came Out"....The Metal Community Didn't have much of a response. We all Loved Rob no matter what. He is The OG Metal God.

Yeah, it was 1990, I know this because that's when I got this in cassette. That was the last golden year of metal. Then came Nirvana in the following year.
Painkiller is, without a doubt, one of the greatest metal albums ever recorded. It's a rare 'All killer, no filler' record.

The guitarist was playing this live while he suddenly had an aortic rupture. He knew something was happening to him but he kept playing the solo. He was hospitalized soon after and is alright now . Legend 🤘🤘🤘

Halford came out publicly in the early 90's when he was a established legend in the Metal environment so many people didn't gave AF and still respected him anyway.

I'm glad Smokey remembered you guys did the breaking the law video. This song came out in 1990. It was after Judas priest had lost their 80s popularity. Heavy metal had lost popularity in favor of grunge etc. They kind of brought heavy metal back from the dead with this song and came with a much harder sound than their usual straight heavy metal sound. Black Sabbath is known for inspiring what would become known as heavy metal. Of the first groups that were defined as heavy metal (before sub genres) Judas Priest (and Iron Maiden) would be forefront on that list :)
Also credit to Pantera, and Metallica's Black Album with helping popularizing metal in the 90s
This song/album didn't save metal, it saved Judas Priest! This was Priest's response to the popularity of thrash metal of the late 80's/ early 90's. Priest's last album turbo was a disappointment in '86 when every thrash album released their iconic albums.
Grunge was astroturfed to kill metal. They paid radio stations across the country to push grunge. The sad fact of the matter is that people tend to like simplistic songs they can follow easily. Grunge was just a heavier pop genre.
There are some interesting diagnostics around popular music and how well they sell. Most of metal doesn't follow that rule. It has been a while since I saw the panel but I think it was at a def con. Also if you never want to feel secure again watch a hacker convention.
@@vagabondwastrel2361 I'm gonna challenge your statement, grunge didn't necessarily kill metal it's more like sifting to the bad stuffs, for example grunge killed hair metal and hard rock.
But then that made a lot more true metal bands to get really big, Like a lot of Groove metal bands like Pantera or machinehead and also Death metal bands.
Grunge reinvigorated the metal scene, people started to listen to more harder stuff unlike listening to some corny hard rock and hair metal bands.
Also big eighties bands like metallica were a lot more popular in the 90s even though metalla had pretty underwhelming albums in the 90s

1990. Raised the bar for other bands like Pantera. Last album with Priest for Halford for over a decade. New drummer on this album. Explosive.
This was their answer to thrash metal. Sort of an "anything you can do I can do better" thing. Rob just turned 70,I believe. You should check out "Children Of The Sun" from their latest,or "Victim Of Changes","Tyrant",or"Exciter" from Unleashed In The East,"Desert Plains","Rapid Fire","Metal Gods","The Hellion/Electric Eye","The Sentinel",and I really think that you would appreciate "Freewheel Burning" from a vocal cadence perspective.

This is 1990 Priest, and also their heaviest album. They were more prog in the 70s and more mainstream in the early 80s. Although Black Sabbath is widely credited with starting heavy metal, it was Judas Priest that embraced the title and was truly the first pure heavy metal band.

Any band I've ever auditioned for made me play Painkiller. It was the only song they needed to hear to see if you were down for the gig.

Judas Priest. They may not have "invented" metal but they sure as he reinvented it with this one
Judas Priest's original look and style was a lot different from the hits we know. They adapted more of a hippy look with silk blouses and cowboy hats and their music was more bluesy or progressive. By the 80s, they adopted the classic leather and studs biker style look. 80s was when Breaking the Law and You Got Another Thing Coming came out. Painkiller actually came out in 90, before grunge took off. 50 years later, the Metal Gods keep going with Rob's near siren like vocals and he's pushing 70.

Halford didn't come out officially until the mid 90s . They kept it down low because they didn't know how the fans would react. Well the fans didn't care about what he did off the stage as much as that he sang his ass off.

This song came out in 1990 . People started dissing Judas Priest for going pop. Said they could not make metal music anymore. The album Painkiller was thier response with the song Painkiller bieng the first track. It is probably the most metal album of all time and sealed Judas Priest forever as metal gods!

This one was actually 1990 and the last album Rob was on before his break from Judas Priest. He ended up coming back like mid 2000s.

This came out after the thrash era began. This was their attempt to keep up . He left the band after this record and formed Fight which was very much a Trash styled band. Check out Nailed to the Gun.by Fight

It was so fun watching you guys react to the music I grew up with. I had the pleasure to see judas priest 2 times. Loudest show I've ever been to and I've seen over 100 showes in my life.
I’ll never forget the day I first heard this album. Unbelievable
I saw them play this live at Louder than Life this September and the crazy part was that their guitarist performing the sick ass solo at the end was having a heart attack and dying on stage during the solo. He played it completely and perfectly and somehow made it to the hospital in time and made a full recovery. He was very lucky and kicked major ass. Makes me love this song even more🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Unleashed in the East is a live album. Listen to Victim of Changes. Its been my favorite Priest song since the early 1980's. Keep up your insightful reactions gentlemen.

The beautiful thing about Rob coming out was after he got past his nervousness about coming out and saw the fans mostly go "okay, can we get another album now?" he was able to be every bit of himself and now he's just every metal head's leather clad auntie, he's great.

This is track 1 from their 1990 album of the same name, and once it starts, it does not let up! Pretty much the whole album, save for one song, is the same level of balls to the wall turbocharged insane musicality: Leather Rebel, All Guns Blazing, Hell Patrol, Metal Meltdown, Between the Hammer and the Anvil...

this is the opening track to one of the all-time greatest metal albums. every song is a banger, except for battle hymn, which is a 1 minute instrumental intro to the album's final track, one shot at glory.
The drummer is Scott Travis. This was his first moment in the priest. He really came out ALL GUNS BLAZING (sorry, that's a JP pun).
Scott Travis previously came from a band called Racer X.
I believe it was Scott Travis that gave JP the energy boost that took them to this next level. There are very few albums on the same level as Painkiller.
Priest changed with the times throughout their career. Their music in the 70s and what you're hearing now which came out in 1990 is like night and day.
The video you are thinking of is the old video of Judas Priest Breaking the Law. When Rob came out it was huge, Metal wasn't ready for it but it made us all look at ourselves and make changes. It was beautiful.
However it is funny how far off these guys are timeline wise. Love it though.

This song marks the debut of drummer Scott Travis with Priest. He was originally from 80s shred metal band Racer X, who are big Priest fans. This is easily the most over the top song from Priest, and is actually in that Racer X shredding style.

Rob Halford is currently 70. This song came out in 1990. The way I see it, Black Sabbath Created Heavy whereas Judas Priest created metal. Motorhead were essentially the godfathers of thrash. For Judas Priest, I would suggest a live version of Victim of Changes. I've heard this song live twice. The first time was when Halford (solo) opened up for Ozzy, second time: I got to work a Judas Priest concert in a casino. Perks of the job!
I am still gonna suggest Liberate by Disturbed. No bananas involved (yes I just heard Gwen Stefani's voice in my head as I typed out bananas) . I suppose you could say it's Nu Metal.
Another questionable musician right now seems to be Marilyn Manson. Plenty of people talking about stuff he has apparently done.
I saw Judas Priest on the Painkiller tourin 1990 when I was13 in Dinver Colorado Megadeth and Testament were the two opening bands. It was one of the most amazing concerts I have ever peen to. There was some Christian protesting outside the concert with a sign hanging from his neck saying Jesus will save you' he was saying that we are all going to hell and onky Jesus can save us.
This entire album is insane! I love priest and rob halford in particular. My favorite voice in music. They have such a wide variety of music spanning over so many decades but always good. Rob is the metal god.
Not a serial killer as such, but Varg Vikernes AKA Count Grishnakh, the sole member of Norwegian black metal band Burzum. He murdered Mayhem guitarist Euronymous and served 21 years in prison. He now lives in France and is a renowned white supremacist. His music with Burzum, particularly his early albums, are really rather good. It's tough to separate the music from the man. Similarly. early 70's UK glam rock star Gary Glitter was very successful and very influential (Adam And The Ants adopted the two drummers sound from GG's backing band, The Glitter Band). You still hear his breakthrough hit Rock 'N 'Roll Parts 1 & 2 played at US sporting events. Glitter (real name Paul Gadd) is currently in prison for child sex crimes.
The whole album is great. The one thing I love about Priest is they evolved with their sound and try new things.

Scott Travis, was the drummer for Judas Priest on this album.. He was also the drummer for Paul Gilbert's speed metal band Racer-X. Paul Gilbert is the lead guitarist for that band. He also teaches guitar at Musician's Institute in CA. There was a fellow guitar player in Racer-x who was also one of his students. Gilbert was also the lead guitarist in the band Mr. Big.

Painkiller is a fictional avenging angel character, one of the many Judas Priest have come up through the years. While the song has quite a number of biblical references, Painkiller is not one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

This album actually was released in 1990. It is considered by my to be one of the greatest metal albums of all times. Highly recommend reviewing Leather Rebel and One Shot at Glory. Both will blow you away! Travis Scott is the drummer. Priest uses a twin lead guitar set up. They are K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton. Ian Hill was on bass. Look at 1983 release Defenders of the Faith. Painkiller is an onslaught. It's no holds barred sonic assault. Fast, clear, and cuts. It had to be exhausting to play on tour.
