Dude I'm sure if you're a priest fan you've probably heard it, but "heading out on the highway" live from the metal works collection is pure Halford magic!
The singer is Rob Halford a legend. For hard rock/metal fans he's one of the greatest voices in metal history. I do understand that all people won't like his tone, but his range was incredible and very powerful. I can recommend victim of changes if you want a killer vocal/instrumental performance and not as aggressive
Halford uses his entire range - this song maybe more than others. From the same album, try One Shot At Glory or Night Crawler. For a softer side, Before the Dawn.
I can understand how Rob Halford's upper register is like nails on a chalkboard to some people who aren't used to it. Nonetheless, his vocal range and abilities are super impressive. Studio editing aside, I still can't comprehend the precision of this song. Everything is just SO tight and precise - nothing sloppy about this at all. Even if you don't like something, you can still appreciate the talent required to do it. I don't enjoy cycling or soccer, but I respect the skill & discipline they require.
This is the only song that Rob Halford stays in his upper register throughout the entire song. You need to hear several other Judist Priest songs to get the whole picture of Rob Halfords vocals.
Going into Judas Priest with this song, having had no other songs first, is like jumping directly into a blender while it's in puree!! Check out more of their hits from the 80's to get a full overview of their amazing catalog of music.
This song is jumping into the deep end of the pool. Judging Judas Priest by it is like stepping outside in southern Texas in mid-August and judging the weather for the entire US for the whole year.
This was their answer to critics claiming they couldn't compete with the newer metal bands that were pushing the heaviness envelope. They started in the early 70s and were not even half as heavy as what you just heard. They were more like hard rock on their first few albums. The singer Rob Halford is a legend in the music world. His range is incredible. On his earlier stuff it's not as high pitched as what you complained about. You should definitely listen to Dreamer Deceiver/ Deceiver, and Victim of Changes from their second album Sad Wings of Destiny. Great reaction once again. Peace.
The 90s really pushed metal bands to either go with the flow of the grunge movement and go soft or get heavier. Priest proved everyone wrong. They not only had what it takes but they led the way. Painkiller is one of the heaviest albums of the 90s.
@@juliangrant9718 I was lucky enough to be at the second last concert for the Painkiller tour that Halford played with them before he left after he had the motorcycle accident coming on stage in Toronto. I had a backstage pass and met K.K. No one else came back though, which sucked. 😁 Priest was my fav band growing up. Peace.
They were a pioneering band in creating what was called "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal" in the late 70's, but by the mid 80's, they had achieved breakthrough commercial success with what were somewhat more accessible singles. When newer bands, clearly influenced by them, began to push the boundaries again with more extreme forms like speed and thrash metal, I think they were motivated to remind people that they could be as hardcore as anybody...In some ways, I think they were trying to be deliberately abrasive...He does a lot of impressive high parts, but he often sings in that lower range like he did at the end here...
This is by far their hardest album that they have done. I’ve had the joy of seeing them four times and they were great every time. Rob Alford is one hell of a singer.
Honest review, love it. Subbed. I'm a huge fan of Judas Priest and I'd recommend letting this song simmer after you've heard a few other tracks of Judas Priest. It's intensity will probably grow on you! I think Rob Halford was just showing off his vocal range in this one, as the high notes he hits in this are incredible.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITES! Nice to see you two discovering Judas Priest. The "Godfathers", of heavy metal. PS. They are legends. And, Rob Halford has one of the greatest voices in ALL Rock-n-Roll/Heavy Metal.
He sings thus song high pitched because the song demands it. But check out the song Beyond the Realms of death to hear his full range. He's known as the metal god.But Priest are the metal OG'S!!!
His vocals had similar effect on many people on the first listen, especially if this is the first song you listen by them. The weird thing it tends to grow on you, even to people who HATED it on first time. I've also disliked his vocals for a while after the first listen and then I became a fan. Of course this song is vocally in the extreme side as he almost always sings at his highest. He uses his highs in the climactic moments in most of their songs but not as constantly extreme like this song. You should listen to "Dreamer Deceiver & Deceiver" and "Victim Of Changes" to see his vocal range and capability in the wider sense :)
@@barsandbarbells2022 Nice, I'd prefer "Dreamer Deceiver & Deceiver" first for you to see his best vocal work in my opinion but Victim Of Changes also a good one. Please don't forget about "Dreamer Deceiver & Deceiver" though, it should be the 2nd next at least :)
Give 'Victim of Changes' live at the US Festival a shot. THEN you'll see why he's regarded as an elite-level vocalist. th-cam.com/video/hDzutIb6p6I/w-d-xo.html Also, on a side note, Rob is the reason leather and studs are associated with metal.
Judas Priest has been around since the 70’s. In the 80’s Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were two of the top metal bands around, no one missed their concerts. This song came out in the early 90’s and was a response to critics telling them they no longer could keep up with the newer bands that were coming out at the time. Robs voice was incredible, if you want something completely different try “Desert Plains” by Judas Priest.
I really like his vocals in this, but more importantly I like that you told us how you feel about it. There is not much point to a reaction video if it isn’t honest, so I very much appreciate that honesty. Also, I was already a metal fan when the album was released, so it is not very surprising that we react differently.
Rob Halford is probably the greatest metal voice because his range is incredible. He can get very high like Painkiller and even low. If Painkiller is your introduction to Priest check out Breaking the Law live
So Rob Halford has an incredible vocal range. He can hit those highs without the rasp(scream) as well. And many other songs show how wide his range is. Dreamer Deceiver & Deceiver really showcases the ability. It takes a few listens to appreciate some of his vocals, but it grows on you
I can understand how people may not see "screaming" as music, but in heavy metal it's a staple sound, as "growling" is in other music. Rob Halford's 4+ octave range, is very uncommon and unique. Rob is legendary in the metal scene. I've seen him for the Screaming For Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, Turbo and Firepower tours and he delivered every time. Unlike most singers whose voice deteriorates with time, Rob can still belt out at a high level at the age of 71. I'd recommend listening to Electric Eye, Love Bites, Freewheel Burning, You Got Another Thing Coming, and Metal Gods; awesome metal songs at the height of their career (okay, ONE of the heights). ;-)
I am a diehard Preist fan, this would not have been one I would have recommended as the first video to have viewed and used to see what they are all about. The older stuff from the 80's would have been what I would have recommended. They have a ton of great hits, Breaking the Law, Screaming for Vengence, You got another thing Coming, Living After Midnight, and the list goes on, one of my favorites is Some Heads are gonna roll and On the Run. Try listening to the earlier stuff, much more enjoyable to listen to.
Judus Priest ARE THE METAL GODS!! Period, End of. So many great songs for you to experience. Break These Chains, Riding on the Wind, Victim of Changes, Another Thing Coming, etc..
If you're not keen on these vocals, the good news is, this is NOT a constant in the JP catalog. There are other songs like Screaming For Vengeance (1982) where the shrill vocals are featured, but for the most part, he sticks to the lower and mid-range registers, occasionally hitting those highs. I think you'd really like Desert Plains, When The Night Comes Down, and the Joan Baez cover of Diamonds & Rust (there are two recordings, one from their debut album Rocka Rolla in 1974, and another attempt for Sin After Sin in 1977 - the latter of which is the better of the two!) .
He sings that high cuz he can!! Rob is a great singer check out other stuff if you dislike this vocal, that being said this was my favorite song and album! Super heavy!!
Judas priest singer is really good when u get to know more about him and his songs but this song was just to proof to the new bands that judas priest can get as heavy as them
I can tell you are not metal heads not knowing Judas Priest - Painkiller. Judas Priest have been around since 1969. Too many songs to recommend but give you a few - Dreamer Deceiver/ Deceiver, Diamonds and Rust (from Unleashed in the East), Beyond the Realms of Death, United, Desert Plains, The Sentinel Rob Halford's register is vary wide ranging and you'll hear less of the upper range in the sings I listed.
You need to hear the many ranges of Rob Halford, this song has a ton of fry in his voice. Even on this album he uses different range. Glenn Tipton plays 1st solo, hes one of the best metal guitarists ever,if not the best, amazing talent.
This isn’t typical of JP. Reactors seem to do this one first which is a big mistake. They are usually way more melodic and Rob Halford’s vocals are not like this in most of their stuff.
Yeah, there's a reason Halford is known as the human air raid siren, but most of their classic stuff is not like this. Halford has a very impressive range though.
This is the one people always request reactions to. I don’t get it, honestly. It’s a great track, but I’d recommend something more in their usual lane to start with. (It’s a bit like the way A7X fans always try to get reactors to start with A Little Piece of Heaven.)
This is like when you're a kid and your dad says he's gonna teach you to swim and just tosses you into the deep end. It's been said in comments already but check out Victim of Changes.
Although one of my favorites, not a typical JP song and they are my favorite band. Fun fact: I don't know why, but Rob chose to sing most of this song in a falsetto voice. His real singing voice can be heard between 10:46 and 11:04. Notice at 11:05 it jumps back into falsetto.
You probably shouldn't have listened to this song first to be introduced to Judas Priest, they are the Metal Gods and my fav band since 79, they've been around since 1969
I've seen the Priest live over 50 times between 1978 and last year (2022) and "Painkiller" (the album AND the song) came a bit as a surprise to me. First of all because Priest tended to go a more pop way, like American Radio friendly with their 1986 album "Turbo" and then had a bit of a resurrection with 1988's "Ram It Down". Where I noticed singer Halford's voice had gone down a bit. Like, from six octaves down to four-and-a half. But, like I said, "Painkiller" was a surprise, showing Halford in good form again. I strongly suggest to lend yer pretty pink ears to "Beyond The Realms Of Death" from the 1978 live TV rendition for Japanese TV and any rendition you can catch of the Priests's rendering of "Bloodred Skies". Your life will never be the same again. I apologise for that, cuz, in the end, you're lovely people and I don't want to cause you no harm. Warm greetings from Belgium.
top ten heavy metal song of all time. dont know how old you guys are but i find it hard to beieve you never heard of judas priest. his voice is HIGHLY RECOGNIZABLE by the metal community.
This song was actually JP's one and only venture into thrash metal, just to prove that they could compete in that genre. They are actually very diverse in metal styles and Rob Halford can certainly sing when he wants to. Check out some of their other songs, like the power ballad 'Angel' and their 1975 live performance of 'Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver'. Also, if you like their guitar solos, check out 'Beyond the Realms of Death'.
This song is a big F You to all the critics that said Priest is dead and can't compete with the newer metal bands. Glad you loved the last 2 min because it's more representative of the way Rod Halford usually sings. Check out any track from the Screaming For Vengeance album to hear the band in its prime. Riding On The Wind is an incredible track from it. Don't give up on Priest they are THE most iconic metal band ever. ✌️Peace✌️
Guys this is real heavy metal at its best, no one wonder pencil neck and the babe on the other side dont understand this stuff, intelligent mans music, extreme, but then again slayer takes it to another level.
J.P. and Iron Maiden were both iconic in the 80s. I didn't really appreciate the operatic vocals until much later in life but the guitar work on this piece is brutal. Good memories.
If you want to hear his vocals, check-out dreamer deceiver or anything from stained class album! He is amazing! Best vocals! Up there with Dickenson and Hetfield. This song was more thrash speed metal than metal.
They just wanted to get thrashy and high energy; which you think that at some point it will calm down but it doesn't. We metal lovers like those screaming vocal as long it sounds good.
This whole album blew my mind when I first heard it. The musicianship is so good. I understand what you mean about Halfords vocals. This is right at my metal limit. Maiden is my sweet spot.
Scott Travis (drums) first album with Priest and was a phenomenal choice on their part. Rob Halford (vocals) is known for being one of heavy metals greatest singers. KK Downing and Glen Tipton (guitarist) have always been a force to be reckoned with as well complimentary to each other. And of course Ian Hill (bass) is the epitome of concrete foundation. Having said that, I enjoyed the reaction. I especially liked the "stank face" it inevitably created for y'all lol. I've seen Priest a few times, and they play an incredible live show. Too many songs to mention, however, the albums British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, and Turbo Lover have some excellent tracks to represent old school Judas Priest heavy metal. Peace ✌ \m/
Guys consider doing some Chris Cornell. I’m sure as hell, you’ll love his voice as well it’ll be an introduction to a new genre which is grunge. Outshined by Soundgarden is perfect to start with.
Yes. This song is Judas Priest pushed to 11. I’m from the eighties. Anything from screaming for vengeance, defenders of the faith or any of the seventies.
Yes, the singing is over the top in this one. Almost a parody of themselves in a way, because they got more and more Metal/extreme with every album up to this point. Rob was an incredible singer and you can perhaps imagine that their first albums sounded quite different, back in the early seventies ;)
Yeah, you should check out some older Judas Priest because like I said on the previous comment this is their heaviest album he’s not always screaming like that even though I love it but yeah, he has a lot more toned down stuff that you should check out

JUDAS PRIEST IS THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD MUSIC HISTORY AND ROB HALFORD IS THE BEST VOCALIST IN THE WORLD AND NO QUESTION OF THAT!!! JUDAS PRIEST IS CRIEITING AMEIZING MUSIC MOORE THEN 50 YEARS! THIS ALBUM PAINKILLER IS THEAR ANSWER TO THE CRITICS THAT THEI STILL NUMBER 1 IN THE WORLD! PLEASE REACT TO JUDAS PRIEST SONGS" VICTIM OF CHANGES " 1976 STUDIO VERSION, " VICTIM OF CHANGES " LIVE IN SAN BERNARDINO 1983, LIVE IN SEMINOLE HARD ROCK ARENA 2005, DREAMER AND DESIVER 1976," THE SENTINEL " LIVE 1987 FUEL FOR LIVE TOUR," SINNER "1982 LIVE VENGEANCE TOUR AND MANY, MANY MANY MOORE! THANK YOU FOR YOUR REAL AND HONEST REACTION!!
HEADBANGING ALL THE WAY. Most of Judas Priest songs are not like this one. This one's special.🤘🤘🤘
And...the bottomless lungs of Rob Halford
Fun fact: I don't know why, but Rob chose to sing most of this song in a falsetto voice. His real singing voice can be heard between 10:46 and 11:04. Notice at 11:05 it jumps back into falsetto.
You probably shouldn't have listened to this song first to be introduced to Judas Priest, they are the Metal Gods and my fav band since 79, they've been around since 1969
You started on one of the most Metal songs ever. He has many sounds and they all are Metal!!! Try Victim of Changes
Victim Of Changes Live at Seminole Hard Rock Arena is a must. Less of what you don't care for much. Rob's vocals truly shine.
Glen Tipton is a guitar, heavy metal God 🤘😎🤘
Honest comments is very appreciate, much better than just say everything is good
I've seen the Priest live over 50 times between 1978 and last year (2022) and "Painkiller" (the album AND the song) came a bit as a surprise to me.
Rob is incredibly varied in his vocal skills. And he has long said that Painkiller was by far the hardest song to sing he's ever done.
As a long-time metal head and Priest fan, the negative reaction to the Metal God’s vocals was wild to hear, but I appreciate the honesty.
Rob Halford The Metal God! Painkiller is an Awesome Jam!
You would have appreciated this song more if you had already fell in love with their earlier stuff from the 80s.
Judas priest made the rock and roll hall of fame this year
This song is the pick of the term heavy metal..
If you ever want to tell someone what heavy metal is, just tell them to listen to this song.
Dreamer deceiver deceiver, my favourite song of Judas Priest.
Ultimate metal song ever
J.P. and Iron Maiden were both iconic in the 80s.
Rob is the Metal God !
This whole album blew my mind when I first heard it. The musicianship is so good. I understand what you mean about Halfords vocals. This is right at my metal limit. Maiden is my sweet spot.
Seeing them live is even better... Rob would ride a Harley Davidson on stage... I'm 60 and still rocking hard!!!!!!
Peace ✌ \m/
Faster than a speeding bullet. Able To Leeper Buildings in a single bound. It's a bird it's plait's judas priest
Guys consider doing some Chris Cornell. I’m sure as hell, you’ll love his voice as well it’ll be an introduction to a new genre which is grunge. Outshined by Soundgarden is perfect to start with.
your opinioon obviously,,, but thats his voice and fits perfectly for this song and the the solos in this no band has ever or will ever touch
The perfect metal song.
The best metal band
Yeah, you should check out some older Judas Priest because like I said on the previous comment this is their heaviest album he’s not always screaming like that even though I love it but yeah, he has a lot more toned down stuff that you should check out
One of the biggest things ever big one best song ever great live music great song
